Well guys im pretty sure my current abit board is dead, it wont install vista or xp it just bluescreens at the end of the install and never finished, memory checks out, tried 6 different harddrives so i think something is messed up on it. I modded the board and am choosing not to RMA it because its probably from some of the modding. Should i just pick up another ddr2 board or ditch it and grab a ddr3?

for games not worth

but for video encoding and editing its worth

DDR3 only beings to be worth it if you are going DDR3-2000 4GB.

Other wise it ends up slower than DDR2.

Use those graphs even if you don't understand the language

No it's completley not worth if for the money because todays Intel Chipset Memory Controlers can't handle it.
Nehalem is a different league.

Alright guys im back in this boat. With the recent drops of ddr3 is it worth the move now? Does perkams statement still hold true? i7 is around the corner and i wont be able to afford that, should i just wait and make the ddr3 move when i do go i7?

Yes, wait until you get i7 for DDR3. Nonsense to get it now without i7 really.

agreed other chip sets just choke ddr3 wasting all most all the bandwidth...i7 is ware the real bandwidth is at for ddr3...i been screaming ddr2 for the longest for lga 775...but hey people still bought it..then when x58 resuts came out people shat themselves..and realized what ddr3 was really about..intel wanted it out before i7 to drive prices down in time for its launch..so the sheep would buy it not under standing what a bus limitation is.:rofl:.worked like a charm..told people that was the reason intel approved it for lga 775 before i7 ever came..and they said yea right...but hey they brought the price of it down like the dark side planed..dont underestimate the pull a company like intel has on the market..and if you bought ddr3 to bench and experiment then you DONT fall under the sheep category.:up:..but most did talking about how they just bought some high end ram 1066...cas-7 :ROTF: no some people did get some realy nice ddr3 and did pretty good but when it first came out it was crap til they got those latencys down...d9,s 4 life or until i upgrade to am3 or i7

Just get a fast DDR2 kit for pre-Nehalem and buy more of it. 8GB sounds good for gaming and especially encoding tasks.

DDR3 shows its benefits for Nehalem and beyond where you need the bandwidth.

Would it be best to just go for 6Gigs of ddr3 then? Or would 4 be sufficent, (if you have i7)

grab a good P45 board with some good ddr2 modules and your good for a while :) and you save quite alot instead buying 4gb @2000 which is hella expensive :(

That's what I thought, no point in DDR3 until i7 really takes off ... plenty of life left in DDR2 for most of us, in fact I'll be upgrading from 4GB to 8GB quite soon on the rig in my sig.

Nehalem runs in Tri-Channel and Dual-Channel.

6GB = 3x2GB
4GB = 2x2GB

Better stick to 6GB. You get more memory for your x64 OS and it runs in faster tri-channel mode. Also, the timings and other memory specs are matched so all three sticjs are compatible to run in tri mode.

If you get 4GB and want 6GB in tri later, it will be a hit-or-miss when matching up a third stick to run in tri mode.

Well i dont plan on building till win7 comes out [or Q2 09] and hopefully by that i7 and ddr3 will be cheaper.

There is no way windows 7 will be out by Q2 09. You'll be lucky if its out Q4 09.

There's no point in waiting for Windows 7.
The parts are very compatible and have driver support.

You can wait forever. Just go and get what platform you want right now. Want to wait for i7? Fine. Want to grab a fast gaming rig? Grab DDR2, E8600, P45, 4870 and done.

+1..:up: buy the time you buy lga775 and upgrade later on down the road to i7...by then i7 will be alot cheaper..so your end up paying the same amount in the end..and have 2 rigs......weather you buy i7 now...or lga775 and i7 later...i predict about the same price overall..:up: cuz right now an x58 system is going to be what...triple the cost of lga 775
