View Full Version : Antec 550w Dead, need new psu

I killed my mostly new TruePower 550w. Installed a new radiator, got water all down inside the PSU. I tried to dry it out, let it sit for a day. But stil, pluged it in and blam. Sparks flying all over the place, loud gunfire type noise as all the transistors blew up, extremely loud bang when the transformer blew up, and then spent the rest of the time smoking and sizzling while im stumbling around half blind to hit the cut off switch. I think the transformer was still wet on the inside or something, sent the whole 120v to all the internal parts. I still see green dots out of my left eye. Anyway.

Im unconditionally short a PSU. Surprisingly, everything else in the computer still works after this. The Antec 550w sucked anyway. Hideous 5v rail still. I just want to spend whatever money and get something decent. I still need an ATX sized PSU, but something with a SOLID 5v line.

Looks interesting, although im not familiar with it. Only 18amps max tho on the 12v line. Thats quite low. Id prefer 24amps or more so i can run a peltier from it. But, i may not do that anymore anyway. Anyone here of these guys or have a better recommendation?

$200 for that PSU seems awfully high...but maybe its worth it.

Does this have a strong 5v line when overclockign athlons?

I have the 420w and it kicks butt, I hear the 520w is a great psu.

TTGI is a great brand to go with.....

Hmm. Could you take a picture of MBM or something and post it here? I'd like to see your voltages for 12, 3.3 and 5v :)

What CPU and Vcore?

Oops...I just found a bunch of threads here about the TTGI and the TurboCool.

Does anyone here actually own the TurboCool? Or did everyone go for the TTGI?

As soon as I get my chip back, I,ll be glad to. Maybe we can get DaGoochMeister to post I believe he runs a TTGI.

I just got back info from PcPower and Cooling.

Apparantly, the +12Vdig and +12Vio lines can be combined for 30amps of 12v power!

I think I know what im getting :)

30A is good but ttgi has one that does 45amps...

Where do you see that?

That looks great JWS. Did you modify that PSU in anyway? What motherboard is that?

Yes

My KX7 has voltage problems, so I emailed Dagooch and he told me about the pot that increases the +5 and +12. It's a great power supply and won't put a hole in your pocket.

just bought me a enermax 651w

+5v, +3.3v, +12v = 525watt
+5v, +3.3v, = 300watt

+3.3v = 40A
+5v = 46A
+12v = 24A
-5v = 1A
-12v = 1A
+5vSb = 1.8A

RMS wattage = 550
Peak wattage = 650

$179 at frys electronics.

no TTGI shame! shame! ;) That enermax sounds cool!

JBell, the Enermax 651 looks cool, but its the older x51 series. I remember having major problems with the x51 series on DDR athlon boards, but maybe the 651 is powerful enough to overcome them?

They never released a newer 665 model (to correspond with the 365, 465, etc). The newer ones are more precise in some way and work with more DDR systems.

Im getting the TurboCool 475. It has 30a on the 12v rail which should be plenty good for the 226w pelt I want to run from it. Unfortunately, until I save up some more money (just bought a gaming laptop), its gonna be a little bit before I can afford it :)

TTGI 520 triple fans...best power supply I have owned so far.

Hey JWS....

Does your TTGI have a stock adjustable pot? I have not cracked mine open to look, but could use a +5 tweak. No matter what PS I use..my +5 drops at high OC.

Thanks:D

Yes! It made a world of difference. Brought mine up from 4.83 to 5.11 and 11.60 to 12.26

Thanks DaGooch! ;)

JWS....

OUTSTANDING! I can't wait to crack her open! I bought an Antec a while back because I was advised the pot was stock but to my dismay it did not exist. I did a volt mod to my old Emax and it worked great for 6 months..then died (taking an expensive hard drive with it) so I am reluctant to add a pot after that. A slight turn
should enable me to ramp mhz up some more as that seems to be the only thing holding me back on my Vapo rig.:D

thanks!

Hehe, I modded my enermax, and it killed four WD1000JB hard drives in two months as I tried to adjust the pot ;) Youd a thought Id a learned my lesson the first time I took two out (they were raided). Neither the antec or enermax had a decent 5v line, so im sick of playin around. Gonna go blow $200 on that 475w beast. Combine the two 12v lines off of it for 30amps of pleasure, and have a happy 5v line for once :)

For anyone interested in the TTGI..here's where I got mine..it was $78 at that time.

$179 at frys gets you a heavy duty 650watt enermax with a 46amp rating on the 5v rail

I would get dedicated power supply made by swifty for TEC cooling .... www.xtwerkz.com has a nice one that I am gonna get once I go TEC

I wont buy another Enermax PSU, the 5v just arent stable enough. The TTGIs sound good, but dont have enough 12v amps.

player0 I found a company a few months ago who specialize in custom psu creation - any wattage with any amperage on any rail...

its expensive but if your gonna be picky - be picky the correct way.

I cracked the TTGI open and found the adjustable pot....gave it a ever so slight turn...but haven't had time to see what effect it had yet. I am very happy to see this feature...this pretty much wraps it up for me...this is the best PS I have had to date!:D

DaGooch
08-24-2002, 05:38 PM
I have had the best experience with the TTGI520SS out of any power supply to date as well. The 5V pot is a really convenient feature although it voids your factory warranty. It even powers these 5V hungry Epox boards without a problem to date for me. :p

TheDude
08-24-2002, 09:18 PM
And it's only $78

update....

Just tweaked the pot and am at 5.12 on plus5 and 12.48 on 12 with stock settings. Guess that should go down to around 5.0 with a big OC? How do those numbers sound? I plan to add a 226 pelt soon.

:D

Sounds great! Mine 5+ averages 5.03-5.06 when vcore is set to 2.1.

I 'll just jump in and support the PC Power and Cooling as it appears I may be the only one running one here ...and on a mega overclocked rig.

I have theTurboCool 450 ATX..which is no longer made. It puts over 550watts max...and carries 50amps on the +5. There are a couple features besides the fact its built like a brick internally, that distinguish these PSU's from all the rest:

Tight power regulation: 1% on all the important lines

Line conditioning: Most people don't know what this is...I had a separate line conditioner for my guitar equipment when I used to play out. What this does is maintains a constant clean and stable line output at the advertised line specs, even when your input ac sags as low as 85v. This is an important puppy when overclocking IMHO...because any fluctuations in your PSU outputs, especially on the +5 or +3.3 lines, will have negative impact on your overclocking and performance endeavors.

The TurboCool also has separate pots for the +5 and +12 lines..and I've also been informed a separate 3.3 adjustment, tho I can't confirm this as I didn't go back inside the PSU to find it.

The last thing is, until you take the case off the TurboCool and feel the heft of it, do you realize the difference in the way its built and the A+ components used within. Thats why they cost twice as much or more...but I'll guarantee it'll be the last PSU you'll ever buy:)

Well if MrIcee recommends it...how can ya go wrong ;)

What impressed me the most about it tho was when I wrote to them with questions, they responded right away. And not only that, they told me how to make modifications to the powersupply lol :)

I ordered this for Bladerunner last week as he couldnt get one shipped to the UK

http://www.pcpowercooling.com/products/power_supplies/highperformance/turbocools/index_tc_600atx.htm

Knowing Bladerunner I Imagine he will be watercooling it in some sort of amazing way.

Thing was like $425
