I was surprised last night (+8GMT) when I was installing a new motherboard on my PC. I had the case lying down so as to have better access to the insides. When I powered up my system, I was surprised to see that my Corsair HX1000's PSU fan WAS NOT RUNNING at all! I quickly turned off my PC and searched google for any other similar occurrences, none turn up.

Since I heavily depended on my computer for work and school, I rigged it up like so:

Is the fan not spinning thing normal? Or should I RMA this ASAP?

RMA it. Not normal.

RMA definitely not normal

lol based on common sense, do you think a fan not spinning is normal? unless it's a magic PSU that is 100% efficient and produces zero heat, return/RMA it for another one

I don't know about the HX, but the PSUs that comes in the Antec Sonata cases do not spin their fans until they have reached a certain temp...

Give it some load and see if fan spins. If not, RMA it (or just contact support)

I think the HX1000 is supposed to run the fan even when stone cold, just very slowly. Try poking a toothpick through the grill and give it a spin, does it keep running, or try to run? If so, then it just isn't quite enough power to it to spin it yet most likely (low PSU temp). Let it warm up for a few minutes, does it run then?

If not, RMA it.

The fan on my HX1000 runs as soon as I press the On button on my case. Definitely not normal.

corsair HX series have a thermally controlled fan. at idle, it's a very slow rpm (i think mine is about 800rpm), but not completely silent even at ambient temps. yes there are rare instances of PSU's have an initial rpm of zero, but there would be a sicker on it that explicitly state it so consumers wouldn't think the PSU is dead. as for the HX1000, it's suppose to be spinning at all times

I know about the other HX units (I have an HX 620 myself) but since the HX1000 is a different OEM than the HX620 I wasn't sure if the fan control circuitry was different any.

RMA it.

lol sorry sparky! i quoted the wrong person. quote corrected...

Yeah, this is why I posted this, since I used to own a PSU which would not make the fan spin when the temps are low. Based on some other owners of the HX1000, the fan should run even on low-load situations, which mean's it's RMA time :D

i know my ultra has a thermal control as it starts up about a minute after i tun on the computer

RMA it. On all Corsair psu's fan has to spin, though on low rpm but not working is not normal.

I thought I'd share my HX1000w story too. I was building another rig and just got the Corsair 1000w psu. All of the other components were brand new too so it made troubleshooting difficult. I kept getting crashes in windows randomly. I tried every motherboard bios, setting, 3 different cpu's, 2 video cards, different cpu hsf's and it came down to the power supply. I figure that would have been the last component to give me issues but it did.

So now it's running like a champ with my old Mushkin XP650. Time to return the Corsair.
