I am thinking about picking up bfg's watercooled gtx 280 (right now it is cheaper then buying a 280gtx and the dd waterblock that comes preinstalled), does anyone have any thoughts on the card/block combo (my 7800gtx really is not handling my x1600hd all that well and its time for an upgrade, since I have a 780i and wont be switching boards before a full Nehalem upgrade (ddr3, motherboard, chip, I will keep the new gpu as I suspsect I will go to Nehalem this winter or early Spring) I think nvidia is the way to go

As long as you have no intentions ever of going SLI.

Big edit.

Well.. I am completely wrong, so I stand corrected.

I am overjoyed that there will be SLI suported Nehalem mobos.

Thanks fart plume. !

link:http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=194815 , sli is on the x58 boards just not the first ones out.

wouldn't it be cheaper just to buy the card + the fc block separately?

IanY I am aware that there is some question as to if SLI will be supported on Nehaelm (and that the chance of it being supported on any x58 board is pretty low (every major chipset they say it will be supported and then nothing)), but I can't see there not being some chipset that supports sli on Nehalem (I know the license is up and nothing is finilized but Intel would be stupid not to allow it in some way as they would loose a percentage of the power user/gaming and even "desktop hpc" market (eiterh to AMD/SLI or just to ati chips)) Larabee (sp?) looks interesting but I doubt it will be a great gpu at first (though I may pick one up early just to play with in for parallel programming).

Aldy402, at the moment I can get the card for less then the cost of the seperate card + block, and while I wouldn't mind installing my own block having the whole thing setup and warrantied is nice (I know evga and a few others allow for installing aftermarket heatsinks but...)

Are you trying to say that it is not possible to run this card and water block in SLI? Because those bolts are just plugs and can be installed on the other side very easily.

no I said it is possible, the connector isn't blocked at all. another poster thought it wasn't possible because it was on an x58 board, and i miss understood what he was saying, I thought he was saying it wasn't possible because of the block being in the way. so i linked to newegg then when the reason became clear i linked to the news section on the x58.

HaCKs I think farplume is saying that you can run sli on this waterblock, and IanY (who I think is under NDA) is suggesting that SLI will not be possible with Nehalem (I suggested that I will likely go to Nehalem before I would replace gpu's as I would hope to get at least 18months out of this card (unless something better from nvidia coems out within 100 days in which case I coudl step up)).

only question I have on the block is what the back of the card looks like (its the dangerden block but they have 3 options (ramsinks, aluminum plate or coper))
