Just got my bonus. Woot!!! 4k is my limit here. I never actually own a top-of-the-line laptop before. Ever... Battery life isn't the problem here either. I am looking for the best damn laptop for power gaming. Which brand? Any DIY platform?

I would buy a good high end notebook with a 9600M GT for around $1,500, buy a nice 24" LCD to go along with it, and spend another $500 on an Acer Aspire One for when you need something to go that is very light.

gaming laptops are incredibly impractical, and they suck at gaming.
get an xps m1330 with a 9 cell battery and geforce 8400.
you cant game on it really, but its a good laptop.

This would be a wise choice indeed.
OR you can spend the money on a high-end desktop and get an ultraportable like the EEE PC or MS Wind. You get the best of both worlds. Though you wont be able to game in McDonald's restrooms you can use the laptop for your everyday needs and still get some.

So where is the "gaming" in all this?

how can you game on laptop and why would you? if you have the time to game i would think you would be at home. unless you travel constantly? even if you did then you would need all sorts of extra equipment (mouse etc). Even if you dropped thousands on a laptop it could not "game" like a desktop. hell even desktops can barely do certain games.

some games would be fine on a laptop if you could find one that doesnt have intense graphics but even so would probably need a fast cpu which is pretty much impractical for a laptop. I just dont see wasting money trying to find the most elaborate laptop when you could get a good notebook and save the games for where they belong...the desktop. sorry but like perkam is saying.. you need a fast cpu, lots of memory, a powerful gpu, a nice screen and good sound none of which exist in laptops!!

1. buy a nice notebook. 2. use it for what they are intended (portable office) because they are not mobile gaming computers. 3. save the money and put it towards your desktop.

Please, the man wants a gaming laptop so let's all help him get one.

The Alienware Area-51 m15x is supposed to be quite good.

dang, the guy knows what he wants. Why tell him what he dont want?

If im not mistaken the 9800m GTX is the fastest mobile GPU to date, so I would search for somthing with that card or better yet 2 in SLI.

Edit: Interesting, this card seems to exist as a 8800m GTX2 from dell.

At https://www.sagernotebook.com you can build a 17" 1920x1200 with a Intel® Core™ 2 Quad Processor Q9550 / 12MB L2 Cache, 2.83GHz, 1333MHz FSB, Dual Nvidia GeForce 9800M GT Graphics with 512MB DDR3 Video Memory in SLI mode, 3x 320Gig 7200rpm Hard drives in Raid0, 8gigs of ram. That would pretty much burn up your $$$ but im sure it would play anything you throw at it!

This definitely looks like a beast. But x2 9800M and a desktop quad core, boy is this bad number hell-hot.

Have you taken into account:
Battery life? With your beefed up setup, I'm betting that the battery won't last over two hours...web surfing.
Depreciation? Laptops lose their value very quickly when compared to desktops.
Value? No matter how much you spend, there will always be a desktop for half the price that will easily beat your laptop...

If you move a lot, I suggest either of the following:
1) Wait for a deal on a cheap (~$1100), yet powerful HP laptop equipped with an 8800GTS 512MB card. It should be more than enough to provide a very enjoyable experience the 1680X1050 screen it usually comes packed with.
2) Get a SFF.

Or something like a MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. Get the thin and 3lb-heavy Air for mobility and the Pro for the 8600M GT and a bigger screen. That should eat up $4k or so.

Or enjoy a big e-peen supplement... grab a 9U server rack, three good 3U cases, and drop three systems in. I'd say Q9450's or Q6600's on P45 boards and 4GB DDR2 1066 each, and a good graphics card for nVidia GPU2 or ATI GPU2 folding. HD4850 or GeForce 8800GS/9600GSO/8800GT 256.
