When im playing cod4, i mostly get 125 fps, but often the fps drops to 20 for like 5 to 10 seconds. i also noticed when this happens.. the hdd makes a short humming noise for like half a second

i tried formatting which hasnt done anything. I noticed this started happening when i changed my mobo and gc. Anyone got any ideas?

i often play matches, and its unplayable when it drops :(

that's never happened to me. i'm not sure what would cause that. is it maybe Vista doing its whacky things in the background?

vista 64 doesnt do anything "whacky" the only thing i shut off is system restore, i run vista untweaked with aero and sidebar open along with a bunch of other stuff and I dont get any slow downs with single 4850 or in xfire. it could be heat though as someone mentioned, the card might be throttling...

with a room temp of 22c my card idles at 53
i cant see it going over 80

im sure its something to do with my hdd's, as it makes a noise everytime cod4 slows down

some of the intel matrix storage manager revisions borked my rig up and gave me HDD hitching, if you have it installed and running your raid off of it, try a different version.

when is the last time you defragmented the HD?

When you get the framerate decrease, quickly hit the windows button on your keyboard and look at the task manager.

Maybe some program, virus or spyware is trying to start itself.

Did you check the task manager to see whether some unknown program/service is hogging up memory or cpu cycles?

In the Performace and Reliability monitor watch the disk activity and wait for the moment it stars seeking and look what has the most read / write activity, that's the process you're hunting for

I wonder if one of your hardrives is getting ready to bite the bullet?

The last time one of my hardrives failed, it made strange noises when booting up, and then finally, all I would get is a black screen.

Or maybe it has a bad sector?

How old is your hardrive?

i did sit and watch it for 10 mins, the hdd never made the noice it makes in cod4 so i couldnt see nothing. will try again today

could be it yeah, although s.m.a.r.t in everest reports everything alright

drives are over a year old, i might just change my mobo and hdds to make sure

How long ago was your last Vista re-install ?

Also, try taking the HDDs off of Raid because if your hard drives are dying and you have Raid 0 on, both drives will have information corrupted.

still havnt sorted this. I didnt want to replace any more hardware because i wasnt sure what it is, and im still stuck

although now my pc is starting to crash randomly. bsods, blank screens ect. also my fsb termination voltage set itself to a red 2.00v, which makes me wonder if it is the hdd's or the mobo

make sure you dont have edge detect aa selected in ccc, i had a similar problem with a single 4870 because of the edge detect, with 2 4870's doesn't make a difference tho

right well iv changed the hdd which was making the noise, and now the new drive is doing it. This has to be the raid controller on the motherboard doing this surly?

could be the hard drives spinning back up after waking up? check your hard drive sleep power managment. I've had that, specially when you've got a large amount of memory and the hard rive doesn't get used for so long

iv done that, changed all the settings to never. I think it was on 20mins or something. but for some reason i think thats sorted it! i was oplaying cod4 and coh all last night and everything was smooth!

thanks billyboy for that i apreciate the help

im just hoping that was it, time will tell
