I've heard a lot about the differences between memory chips but usually get names thrown at me and have no idea what to think.

So far i've heard of...

Micron
Infineon
Quimonda
Elpida (currently running GEIL black dragon 2x2GB DDR2-800 i believe there elpida)
Powerchip

i've heard Micron chips die easily although they appear to run at low voltages - am i safe to assume they run fairly cool?

Fixed. And Micron is finicky--if you want 24/7/365 I wouldn't recommend it.

wich chips clock the best? I have mocron ddr2 667's that clock to 1066mhz and elpida ddr3 1333's that only clock to 1496mhz

Every chip can die.
That depends on how you run it, if you're abusing it, and of course the "quality" of the chips ( luck of draw lets say ).

I haven't had a single DDR2 or DDR3 kit die ( only one dead kit from... very very dangerous voltages 3.7V+ @ DDR2, and a DDR3 kit with a broken PCB due to the...the nice people who moved my boxes by kicking them and throwing them out of their truck ).

I've been feeding my Micron D9GMH & D9GKX DDR2 kits with normal and crazy voltages, both for a while and they're still fine.
In fact I'm running 8 sticks ( 4 on each motherboard ) of Ballistix PC2-6400 at DDR2-1250 5-5-5-15 on two Maximus Formula's for over a year.

I am a bit overprotective though, I never run any of my DDR2 or DDR3 kits without a fan over them.

I'm more or less going on reliability based on what the crunchers say. ;) Usually Micron out, drop something else in that'll run for a longer time on the same voltage/settings.
