View Full Version : MCR120 with E8400?

Will a MCR120 handle an overclockecd E8400? I am getting ready to go with a dual loop setup. I have a D5 pump on the way. I just got 1 MCR120 from Petra's in today. I think I can get another one in my case if needed.
Plan on putting my NB and 2 3870's on my PA120.3.

Sure if you put some decent fans on it, even better with fans in push/pull with shrouds.:up:

What's the total heat load for that?

I think the heat load is around 113 watts. But not very sure. As far as good fans I take it Yates won't cut it. I have thought about push/pull. Guess I can pick out some better fans and give it a try.

Give it a try. I use to run an E6300 @ 3.3GHz on a single black ice pro w/ a single Yate Loon without any issues. And I am pretty sure the E6300 would dump out more heat than an E8400.

Here is swiftech's charts with 2000RPM delta at different voltages, but I have no idea if that's push or pull or what.

I know with the XSPC RS120, I'm able to push a 167watt heat load on my test setup with the following:

Ultra Kaze in Pull, 2000RPM = 10.10 C delta
Ultra Kaze in Push, 2000RPM = 9.15 C delta
Ulra Kaze in Push/Pull = 7.40 C delta

And shrouds are adding about another 10-15% gain, so you could probably get down under a 5C delta (High Performance)with the right setup, and a 10C delta pretty easily.

I have a e8400 running stock on a single 120 BIP and it usually sticks somewhere around 50c load according to coretemp. Ambient is about 25c here. I Remember reading that core temp reads the e8400 about 10c higher but I don't know if thats still true. Can anyone confirm this?? I haven't been worried enough to research it as this isn't my primary system.

Supposedly RealTemp is more accurate than CoreTemp for the Wolfdales. With my E8400, CoreTemp does read about 10C higher than RealTemp. Try RealTemp, and post your idle/load temps! Stock settings, so vcore is 1.2v?

Oh yeah I forgot to mention those temps are with a single high speed yate pushing. I'm gonna check with realtemp tomorrow when I get home.

my old setup of a d-tek 120 heatercore and storm2 on my oc'd e2160 (not really sure how its heat dump is compared to an e8400) would idle in the 40*C and load around 55*C with an ambient around 27*C

I don't think you can really compare the two since your processor is a 65nm chip while the e8400 is a 45nm chip

worse to worse you'd think the 65nm would be run hotter due to higher volts but its at least a reference

Yea a 65nm chip is most likely hotter. I just fired up my second PC (actually typing this up on it lol) and realtemp reads exactly 10 degrees cooler than coretemp shows. Idle it sits at about 35~40c and load was at 45c (it's a few degrees warmer today than yesterday) on realtemp after about 35~45 min of running prime98 (walked away and lost track of what I was doing for a bit lol). This doesn't really prove anything on which is more accurate, but at least it will give you an idea on how a 120mm rad can handle an e8400.

I got some initial results. With 1 Yate Loons and an ambient of 26 I get an idle of 37/36 with RealTemp. Load temps suck though. 56/52 after 30 mins. of Orthos. The cpu is running at 4ghz with 1.37 volts. I am going to try a run with stock settings and see what I get.

Just got done with a run with optimized defaults set in bios. Idle temps where about the same. Load temps came in at 48/42.
I turned the fan around to pushing air through the rad. So far temps are lower. 45/39 with 6 mins. on Orthos.
I can say that my gpu temps are looking alot better after takeing the cpu out of the loop. So it seems that keeping the cpu in it's own loop is the way to go. Now to get my cpu temps in good shape.

I lowered my overclock down to 3.6 ghz. Core voltage shows 1.26 in SmartGaurdian and in Everest. Need to check it with my meter when I get a chance. Temps are 49/44 with a 30 min. run of orthos. This is one yate pushing.
I am happier with these results. May have to find a shroud and see if it helps.
