Hey guys,

So in the next two weeks I'm going to be ordering a Canon 30D DSLR.
My dad already has a Canon 24-70mm F/2.8L lens that I can use, and thats a pretty good size for me, for now until I get maybe a 100-300mm... But for now I don't need one.

So, what should be the first lens I buy? I'd like to keep with Canon lenses only, unless the 3rd party lens is pretty darned good.

These are some lenses I've found that I like:
Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0007WK8KS/ref=ord_cart_shr?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=A17MC6HOH9AVE6&v=glance)
Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00009R6WO/ref=ord_cart_shr?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=A17MC6HOH9AVE6&v=glance)

I like wide shots, and do Macro and portraits often.
If you have a suggestion, please post it!! :D
Thanks guys!

Get the macro, you already have a great all around lens with the 24-70.

I would start with a wide angle. Your widest shots will be at 38.4mm on the 24-70 which is not wide at all.

But you need to ask yourself - what do you shoot most? That determines your lens choices.

Neither of those lenses tbh. The 16-35 is a better option then the 17-40 and if you want a macro, get the 100mm f2.8 or the 85mm f1.2 Both are great lenses and i love my 100mm macro to death.

Too bad the 16-35mm in like $1250...:(

Now that I've really checked into Macro shooting, I'd say that I hardly ever do "real" macro (like shooting a frog's head or a fly's eyes......), so I don't need the 60mm, although it'd be fun to mess around with.

I've checked out the 85 and 100mm macro's to, but just can't justify me paying that much for a lens I may not use to much (for now at least).
Lol yea, the 16-35mm would be the one to buy, but eh..... (see next post....)

Exactly.

So, I found a deal on craigslist for a 30D, 28-135mm (canon) lens for $750, and I'm going to go pick it up tomorrow, I'll probably be selling the lens since I don't really need it, but we will see.....

After I learn more about camera's, and using the 30D, I'll then decide what lens I'll buy, probably going to be the 17-40mm though.

I actually used the 28-135 at Point Lobos as well, and it's not at all bad for a "consumer" lens. Fast focusing (due to the USM), relatively sharp (doesn't compare to the L lenses of course), lots of good things about it... well, just try it Parker, you might end up keeping it... it's a great walkaround lens.

Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 gets my vote...excellent all around lens and very affordable.
