seeing as currently not in a hurry i can wait. Besides my mars board has been chugging along with my q6600 at 3.8ghz with a 475fsb without hiccup :)

i believe the avenger will actually have full 16x on both lanes for crossfire due to that bridge chip correct ? unlike the other p45 boards.

This board looks hot. With DDR3 / P45, if they can get the FSB going up 600+ like P45/DDR2 and tRD going down to 7 or 8, and with 16x 16x they will have a checkmate.

thought Crosslinx was Asus technology...only used on 16 x + 4x lanes to make it be 2 x 8 in CF (concerned P35 chipsets for instance)

I have a sample. :D

http://www.benchbrothers.de/bilder/artikel/foxconn_avenger/l01.jpg

It´s not a retail-board but it looks nearly finished.

2x PCIe x16 is possible due to a additional plx-chip.

I was able to pull out 570 fsb on G|C in Germany a few weeks ago without tweaking - just using my BlackOPS-settings with this particular cpu. Since the bios I used was from 08/05/08 I think there are more improvements with newer versions.

To be honest I didn´t contact anybody.

Saaya invited me to visit (and bench) on Foxconn booth on Games Convention in germany. I visited him and had a great time. There I had the opportunity to play with this early sample of Avenger. :yepp:

When G|C was over I had a hard fight with saaya. I won and I took the sample with me. :D

I had a bios from 08/05/08 and we got some problems with 2x 2gb of ocz-memory. This version don´t work with 4870x2 in cfx-mode, too. Today saaya send me a new bios version so we can test again (and more).

With the bios I used until yesterday there was no way. But I think that was due to memory limitations (ocz 2x 2gb). Saaya told me that they reached 600 fsb in the labs long before I got this sample.

With the new bios and good memory we will re-test again in a few days. I think there is much more possible than 570. ;)

Saaya gave me the permission to share my pictures, so here we go:

http://www.benchbrothers.de/bilder/artikel/foxconn_avenger/l01.jpg

This one you already know.

A closer look at the upper right of Avenger.

A closer look at the upper left. Northbridge, cpu and pll are placed as near as possible to each other.

http://www.benchbrothers.de/bilder/artikel/foxconn_avenger/l04.jpg

The additional plx-chip is located between both pcie x16-slots.

http://www.benchbrothers.de/bilder/artikel/foxconn_avenger/l05.jpg

On the left of the southbridge-cooler you can see both bios-chips Avenger is featured with. Speaker and debug-led is also located on the lower right.

http://www.benchbrothers.de/bilder/artikel/foxconn_avenger/l06.jpg

Sys-fan, firewire and additional usb-ports are located under pci-slot.

http://www.benchbrothers.de/bilder/artikel/foxconn_avenger/l07.jpg

Retail-boards will have power-, reset- and cmos-clear-button onboard. My early sample doesn´t have so the screwdriver is my best friend. :D

http://www.benchbrothers.de/bilder/artikel/foxconn_avenger/l08.jpg

Southbridge-cooler is equipped with qf-logo. On the left side: jmb363.

http://www.benchbrothers.de/bilder/artikel/foxconn_avenger/l09.jpg

Fsbsel-jumper is already known from BlackOPS. Pll is ICS9LPRS919HKL. Upping fsb with setFSB is no problem.

http://www.benchbrothers.de/bilder/artikel/foxconn_avenger/l10.jpg

Avenger is featured with 8-phase digital pwm.

http://www.benchbrothers.de/bilder/artikel/foxconn_avenger/l11.jpg

Both network-devices are made by broadcom. Firewire comes with Texas Instruments TSB43AB22A.

http://www.benchbrothers.de/bilder/artikel/foxconn_avenger/l12.jpg

Sata and ide-ports have a 90°-angle.

http://www.benchbrothers.de/bilder/artikel/foxconn_avenger/l13.jpg

Northbridge-cooler isn´t the biggest one but it´s massive copper. No heat problems so far.

http://www.benchbrothers.de/bilder/artikel/foxconn_avenger/l14.jpg

Last but not least a short look on I/O-panel.

I hope you can get some first impressions about this motherboard. :)

I do wonder why they went for a 8 phase instead of 16.... This could also be my in-experience ofcourse but it would give better stability right?

Spoken generally, the higher the number of phases the better. But you can do lots of things wrong designing and building a 16 phase-pwm and on the other side you can do lots of things right designing and building a 8 phase-pwm.

So if it is designed well (and I think so) you don´t need 16 phases.

Slovnaft
10-02-2008, 04:43 AM
personally i applaude that foxconn has stuck with high quality 8 phase pwm rather than ASUS who, imo, jumped into the 16 phase game too early and used :banana::banana::banana:e design like their P5Q3 which was just 2x8 analogue. imo '16 phase' is more of a buzz phrase.

you guys are all forgetting that this is 8-phase digital compared to 16-phase analog. digital have square waveforms and analog have sinusoidal, digital is more accurate and more stable. Digital can handle more current, better for those b3 quads on LN2 :ROTF: but seriously though it is still nice to have. Lastly digital refreshes more frequently to keep a steadier voltage.

Volterra's solution is amazing for it's package size, mm for mm it gives the highest tolerance around. Take a look at the VT1195 Slave MOSFETs...

http://b.imagehost.org/0517/voltea.jpg

Peak of 47amps per mosfet, 40 amps continous easy :D

You have 320amps there, inductor does about 35amps each, so worse case scenario you have 280 amps...
Even if you run 1.9v you could have 532watts of power delivery if your cpu is still running :D

if it's just not so expensive...

The Avenger has true dual x16. The ELA (a different board) goes into x8 mode when more than 1 card is inserted, but it can hold 3 cards at x8.

I got the impression from your post you were mixing up the Avenger and the ELA. If I'm mistaken then I apologize.

but it clearly says 3 card support with 8x8x8x

i would have figured that u saw that we were saying that on the forum/this thread sooner i hope no1 bought that for the 16x16 xfire

the amd one has a similar image can it do that it says 16x16 or 8x8x8x8

i dont know why they made this presentation... i guess the same person made the one for the amd board and then mixed things up...
I already fired off and email and it should get fixed asap. sorry if this caused any trouble :S

the ELA is def a nice board for tripple xfire, be aware that its not a board meant for overclockers though! :D

New bios 832f1p03 brought major improvements. My teammate Hoschi (he currently has this board in his hands for testing, I´m busy with other things) told me, that he could do ~540 fsb with 2x 2gb with old bios. Now he can do up to ~570 with 4x 2gb!!

When I tested BlackOPS, I gained 30 mhz fsb and one performance level when changing cpu-cooling from air to cascade with exact same bios-settings. On Games Convention Avenger acted exactly the same when changing from boxed air to ln2 (-120 degrees). I hope that this board will act the same with new bios so ~625 to 630 fsb should be easy possible for 3d. If so, we can expect ~625 to 630 fsb with pl9.

He also tried lower pl at 600 fsb but it wasn´t very stable.

what chipset volts did you try?

Up to 1.5 volts. Only a 120mm fan is blowing on the northbridge cooler.

If they canceled i think they made a big mistake. This board could become what the E8600 was for the 755 socket processors. The last product but also the best.

It has so much potential and i doubt more then 20% is gonna go Nehalem within the next 1/2 year. The other 80% wants to get the most out of their current hardware (like me) and this board would be perfect for it!

Saaya please tell us it's still coming out?

OH i definitely don't know this for sure.
I'm just saying. It's shaping up to be the same scenario.

And even if it was released, I'm really not sure how much it could compete with current P45 offerings. I mean, Gigabyte's kindof brought down the sky with UD3P. Thenagain, maybe the 16x16 xfire would make it competitive. Who knows. But it would need to work some fsb magic to compete.

I do hope the Avenger will eventually get released, s775 is far from dead yet, it still got atlest another year to live, but yes, the competition is brutal. As for 2x 16 pci-e, dont forget that x38 / x48 boards are constantly dropping in price.

A few days ago 2nd AOCM (official review, german (http://www.awardfabrik.de/sonstiges/2.-aocm-bilder-daten-fakten.html)) took place. Our benchmarking-team was there to compete in the contest "fastest Aquamark3-run extremecooled".

A few hours before the contest started we played again with Foxconn Avenger, this time under ln2. We were able to benchmark up to 620x10 with pl9 without much effort. Unfortunately we couldn´t reach higher clocks but it looks like it was the cpu (it was never tested before under cold).

Avenger worked very well and was very stable. VDroop-control worked great. But there is one major issue with this board: Memory clock. Like with BlackOPS different memory dividers only work up to a certain fsb. We had to downclock memory every time when we reached ~850 mhz (ddr3-1700). There was no way for us to run higher speeds.

I already talked to saaya about this.

Here (http://www.benchbrothers.de/forum/thread.php?threadid=78&sid=) you can read a short story about 2nd AOCM (in german).

Even if it does come out...they still took way too long imo.

Maybe a lesson for next time: don't announce a board if you can't launch it within 3 months:p:

Besides, they better focus their attention on x58. There's so many p45 boards out there and everybody who wanted one already has one so this wont sell much anyway.

Why on the reviews it mentions the board as DDR2?

"Foxconn plans to release a motherboard based on the mainstream Intel P45 chipset - Foxconn Avenger. The board has an LGA775 socket turned 90 degree making room for the northbridge that is placed between the socker and DDR2 memory slot."

"It supports DDR2. Some info on how it manages dual x16:

The PLX chip is the same one AMD uses on the HD 4870 X2, where it does dual-GPU + GPU peer-to-peer switching:"

"Foxconn claims to have made several changes to the basic design of a motherboard, by pushing the northbridge closer to the DDR2 memory slots (reportedly to cut latencies), and the inclusion of a supplementary PCI-Express switch, to provide dual PCI-Express x16 connections for ATI Crossfire: something not possible with P45 motherboards. The switch chip is made by PLX, and is similar to the one used by AMD on its flagship Radeon HD 4870 X2 graphics card."

well im looking at the avenger also...seeing my ud3r will bench over above a 500 bus but will only stay stable at 495 and im not the only one with this problem with the ud3r...the ud3p on the other hand will get 515 stable for most people...my e8400 runs 4.45ghz rock stable with 1.3700 v-core and a 495 bus...my chip ran 4.7ghz with around 1.4100 the board just wont stay stable with a higher bus..so i need to upgrade the ud3r is holding me back..and you know the thing is crap and droop town unless you enable the load line calibration which only makes up for the boards short comings....i dont care either il run my chip with 1.4300 vcore all day long i just need 525 stable on descent volts...so if any one thinks they know a p45 that will do that leave me a message...cuz who knows when the avenger will come out

the funny thing about this board is they just made it as good as an X48 (with 32 lanes CF)...just as good as a blackops...so what's the point  besides, like I mentioned in a post above, I saw the board listed just a few hours on a site a week ago (not in stock right), and it was priced at 300 euros...

Wow, $300. I mean I am sure it is worth it, but with the X58 being available, I am not sure it would be worth going to it. Both use DDR3 and the boards cost around the same, the only difference is you could use your current chip. I will wait to see the reviews to see how good it is before making a final decision on it.

Well, I actually get the purpose of this board, it's just if you were going to buy a new board and ram, why not jump into a x58 board. I just think it is a little late to the party and if it had made it to the market 2-3 months ago it would have been a hit. This reminds me of the Asus Blitz, a P35 that gave you 2x8 PCIe slots for CF along with some great overclocking features. The problem was that it was release a month before the x38/x48 chipsets, which offered 16x16 PCIe slots for CF and it was at the same price as the x38/x48 boards. If the Avenger was a DDR2 board and/or under $200, then I could see people getting this board instead of moving to the x58 boards.

Anyway, it is still a moot point until it actually hits the market, we know the price and it has been reviewed.

Yes and don't forget that Giga UD3P costs around $110, with the extra $250 you can put towards a X2 and not need the double x16 lines.

Frankly I'm very skeptical as adding that CF chip can really decrease the OC potential, this is just a feeling I have, the simple the better but I can be wrong.

Have to wait for reviews especially with the Q9650 chip that is pretty comfortable around 4500Mhz on the UD3P.

well you have to consider that the reason the X48 chip has so much trouble is that the PCI-E controller is beefier and interferes with the MCH. Once you remove the PCI-E controller onto a seperate chip all of that goes away. this is the way all "x series" chipsets should have been done from the get go but intel didn't want to do it that way...

blindfitter, Can you do any tests with 2x2G sticks. I would like to know if the dividers are working on this board with my black ops I cant get 500 to work on the 1:3 or 1:3.2. I do like the layout more with the Avenger then my Black ops. Also just wondering about the PLX chip say if some one was going a 4870x2+ a 4870 would it still work? I think so but dont know since the use of 2 PLX chips. I am also on a E8600 but with 2x2G memory. So I been reading everything you been testing.

thats a cool story... now do it with a real quad core, you know, E0 stepping, maybe the qx9770... measuring a boards overclocking abilities with a q9300 isn't really measuring much since that chip can barely OC already... do it with a q9650 and then i might take what you said seriously...

your one of the first i've heard of, i looked at your sig and it shows u got 430x7 on a g33-ds2... i wasn't trying to put down your expertise i just never saw anyone dismiss a motherboard based on q9300... ur your es qx9770 or as i said a new e0 quad, then it'll be a true judge or if anything use a e8600... btw stable to me means nothing with specifics, IE prime95, OCCT, etc. stable means different things to different people... but i do appreciate your input and thank you for sharing your results and opinion, although i disagree to an extent i still respect it, thanks.

That's rubbish!

You don't need a high-end cpu to judge whether a motherboard is good or not, you need a cpu of which you know it's limits. The cpu clearly can do 500FSB, so being limited to 420-430 on the P45 is related to the motherboard, either the design, bios or user settings

Slovnaft
11-25-2008, 06:16 AM
imo low end fsb hungry quads are the best tests of a motherboard's true capabilities; 600fsb has been pushed on so many boards, but how many boards have achieved 540+mhz quad fsb? only one i know of... XD

I'd say the two standards of a good P45 would be 640+ dual fsb and 500+ quad fsb. then it can rest amongst the other p45 kings.
