Did your computer's power supply unit ever die on you?

If so, how did it happen? Was it loud? Did it take other componants with it? Did it just never start again? What was your experience?

Mine just popped and it seems it took stuff with it.

An Enermax died on me, two weeks old.

One sure sign of death ahead, is that it gets hot, very hot.

Owwwwwwww!

So they can takeout a motherboard.

My Antec 400 eight-year-old PSU went out with a loud enough audible "pop" during a HalfLife 2 session taking down everthing on the local network and setting off the siren on the APC UPS. After I wired in a new Antec EarthWatts 500 PSU, my Asus P4P800 Deluxe mb booted fine but only into windows safe mode. I cannot get it to boot into windows GUI mode no matter what I do. (All other items on the network are fine.)

Enermax Infiniti 720 Died after about 6 mos. Turned off computer, psu just kept on beeping the day after while trying to power up. Enermax gave me a whole new unit, great warranty service. I had a spare 430 in the mean time. No components taken out.

I had an Antec Neo HE that just stopped working. Didn't take out any components, cuz I just popped in a trusty 620HX, and it was back up and running.
Let's just say I'm probably never going back to Antec if I can help it.

Haven't had one die on me yet...

Hopefully it won't happen any time soon or take any components with it.

4-5 years ago I had a PC Power & Cooling 510 Deluxe die on me, pretty sure it was my fault though. Although you think a $200+ (was damned expensive for a PSU in those days) would have a fault protection.

My cheapaz Tecnoware 450 W I owned before my current PSU just started sparkling from the back, I shut it down and never used it again.

My HX520 was dying if that counts?

It wouldn't boot up half the time, and when it did I wasn't able to save bios settings on my IP35 Pro.

I had an Antec SmartPower 2.0 500w that blew a cap on the 5vsb rail, me thinks. It would make this whining noise (like bombs being dropped in WW2 movies :p:) unless I pulled the plug or flipped the switch on the back of the unit to turn it off. Antec RMAed it (4 days left before warranty was up) and I ended up selling the unit when I got it back and bought a Silverstone OP650. It didn't take any parts with it I don't think... my 7900gt was dieing from something else... I think STALKER was cooking the memory because it artifacted like no other when I tried to play anything on it.

I never had a PSU die on me, not in all the years I'm building systems. But it happened to a friend of mine, he said he heard, like Polizei pefectly described it, "whining noises", something really high pitched. He didn't notice at first, as it got louder he was wondering what it might be, and then BAMMM! He said it felt like a bomb exploded in his room, it must have been extremely loud. All this was followed by thick white smoke as he was desperately searching for the fuse. Afterwards he looked inside, and well even the case was a bit bent and the inside was just a mess, the shrapnels killed just about everything. He bought a completely new system...

ouch, sounds like quite the story.

I had 2 seperate Antec TC 550w go on me, the original and the replacement. Let's just say I got an OCZ after that. I am now on a Silverstone DA750 that is working wonders. Even did a 36h Prime blend with everything full tilt in a 30c room and it still kept kicking. Very happy with this psu.

I've got an old 380W antec that has been running almost 24/7 since 2003 and my newer computer has a NeoHE 430W that has been running since early 2007 , practically 24/7 as well. Both came with Antec cases so they're kicking ass with a lot of value.

2 no-name PSU's died on me in the past...one of em took an old CPU and mobo.

Recently an Enermax EG465P-VE 460W stopped working...it was running an underpowered rig, like 150W only. That was my first "good brand" PSU.

one GameXStream 700W. But it was my fault. My pc was drawing way too much power.... They sent me a 850W replacement, though :D.

I've had an Antec PSU die on me after 3 years. An Aspire PSU (cheap POS) died after a day.

My Forton 600w is still kickin after 1.5 years, as well as a Chinese made off brand 420W.

From what I can see in this thread, Antec has gone waaaay downhill since the early days.

Enermax Galaxy Dxx 1000: random reboots (really annoying), fan noise, etc. Change it for a Corsair HX1000. No problems anymore. Rock stable. :)

I had 500W Ultra psu die, at some point it just refused to turn on again.

I got suckered by the OCZ name once. PSU popped, smoked, and fried my mobo, CPU, ram, and video card.

I had a Hiper-R 580 die on me under mysterious circumstances. It was a nice psu which had a feature where after the system shut down, the fan kept running for a few mins. It was powering my old athlon xp rig, and one night i shut it down like i always did, and smelled magic smoke afterward. I was already in bed at that point so i figured if there's something really wrong, it'll start a fire and wake me up. So i went to sleep. I made it to the morning with no interruptions and checked it out, bad PSU. I believe it was this feature which keeps the fan running after shutdown which killed it. Luckily nothing else died.

RMAed the PSU and got back one with different color sleeving. It's a modular PSU, and for the RMA, they told me just to ship the supply and no other cables. Thus my modular cables' sleeving did not match the sleeving on the one I got back. They included a hat and tote bag as if to say sorry, we know your PC is gonna look like ass but you're stuck.

/never followed up with hiper to see what the deal was
//never buying hiper again

I had a Tagan Turbojet 1100w that exploded in a blue cloud after 4 days of use. Just started a game. The support from Tagan must be the worst I've seen to this date. One thing is for sure. Not gonna buy even the smallest thing from Tagan again. Bye the way, motherboard, raptorharddrives, memory went down in the crash.

Thanks for all the data Buds.

ATM it looks like for every three computers that survive a PSU death, one computer does not. Not great odds with a PSU taking out your motherboard, etc 25% of the time when it dies.

I find it odd that people have had Enermax Galaxy's die on them. I thought they were the best? Maybe it's because there are so many of them here?

BEFORE XS

I used to buy generic ram, generic psus.

I've had 2 $25 generic psus blow on me ~7 years ago.

Since then, i've learned not to skimp out on psus.

3 year old Antec NeoPower 480 died on me and took Asus A8N5X mobo, KVM and keyboard with it. Was under warranty and replaced with Antec HE500. I bought Quattro 850Wt later, and been happy ever since.

I have had 3 die and all of them were the cheap psu's that came with cases. one was a "800w" and my x1950xtx smoked it about 2 hours in. another one let the smoke out of its magic smoke container and killed my motherboard. I finely learned the lesson not to trust the cheap PSU's that come with cases
