Basically, its upgrade time for me, but thanks to ripoff britain and the 17.5% tax rate, the £522 i've got available just wont cut it.

Having looked at prices on newegg.com, you get a substantially better deal, and what with the exchange rate being £1 = $2, i wondered if anyone here would be able to help out on the logistics side of things!

To put it simply, i paypal $1033 to someone, they buy the parts on my list, get them delivered and then re-ship it to me in Europe....marked as something innocuous like...er...birthday gift for $40 or something ;)

This is the reason why i'm wanting to get it from the US:

(Item / Price in the UK / Price in the US)

Asus P5E / $255.56 / $224.99
Core2Duo E8400 / $241.63 / $189.99
500gb Hitachi Deskstar / $99.88 / $79.99
2 x Radeon 4850's / $566.90 / $379.98

Shipping / $17.70 / $15.15

TOTAL / $1,181.67 / $890.10

I dunno about you, but that is some SERIOUS price gouging

Obviously shipping to me will cost a bit, but i doubt it'd cost more than $142!

Oh and of course, you can keep any extra, and rebates etc - not interested in those :D

Yeah slightly illegal and if you say the estimated cost of the goods is $40, it is going to be hard to insure for $1033. For such a great amount, you really need insurance in case things go sour.

Best of luck to you anyway.

EDIT : I hope the thread title was in jest.

illegal? i dont think so. ive bought from o/s (Chicago,IL) it's just that most r/e-tailers dont like shipping o/s.
..and i would definitely have shipping insurance.

British Customs sucks - i once bought a gasket set from the states that cost $50....the customs charge was $200....which is patently ridiculous - i have no problem having something being marked under value to get past those b'stards.

their VAT 15% is riddiculous .. i can understand they wan to limit foreign purchasing to protect their currency value ...

but why domestic is applied as well? dont they wan to encourage domestic products?

it's like calling you to living self-sufficient, plant your vegies, rear the cows

what's doing British raking that huge amount of tax cash for? i recall u guys have to pay income tax rite? and also the luxury tax as well

Kai Robinson

15? Its 17.5 mate....

And yes, we pay income tax as well....and 80% tax on fuel. And luxury taxes.

In fact we're taxed up the arse, but the sheeple of this country cant be bothered to do anything about it.

Put it this way, each year, we spend £35,000,000,000 on the military - ALL of the military - air force, navy, army, royal marines etc.....we spend £24,000,000,000 on policing & CCTV cameras.

The NHS? Oh, thats just a mere £150,000,000,000 - thats 150 billion. And it rises by 20 billion every year. Why? Cause socialised medicine doesnt work - the system is bureaucratic and non-functional, the waiting lists are dire the doctors overworked and underpaid and all the money goes on paperwork, middlemanagement and local health authority slush funds.

*ahem*

So yeah, i have no problem 'defrauding' customs.

Anyhooo.....back to my main topic :D

Just make sure you get insurance.
Damn international shipping leads to destroyed packages all the time :(

For those who didn't follow me [and I can't blame you], I meant it is illegal to say the goods enclosed are worth $40 for taxation purposes. However, I don't think it matters how much it is worth if it is a gift. I've sent and received several gift packages from Singapore and neither of us has been slugged with tax.

Most of our products are overpriced too but the problem is no where as bad as it is for you guys. I'm thinking of ordering most of my parts from the States as the cost + shipping cost is less than what I would have to pay here. If your board dies then things get rather difficult.

? i never got charged anything by customs...but it was only a small package..it was over 100$ worth amp tubes...
maybe there is a method of posting that avoids customs duties.
also, but this is probly wrong, i think you should be able to buy retail from o/s, but for bulk wholesalers they are hit with import duties

As long as the goods are under $1000aud there are NO customs to pay on the item/s.

This package will be over $1000 but then again, Australia is not the Uk :). Let's hope theirs is say 2k.

then buy two packages...but then, that's two sets of post=expensive..
but if you were to get the most gouged parts from o/s and remain under the customs duties limits, then it's a win..haha, except for postage and insurance costs:doh:
but; i'd rather just scoot down the road and pick somethingup cheap from umart :p:..no probs with warranties then either.

or become a bulk importer and then offload it to the retailers..how many 1000's of units do you need to buy to get wholesale prices? :ROTF:
ive rung up wholesalers...all they wanna know is what you want and how many? yeah sure im a retailer, not, ....reseller application, abn, registered business name,...:yawn2:

Knock on wood! I have ordered things from petras and from Hank at PCS.

As long I order for a value of around 200$, the Swedish custom service apparentlty let them pass through.

I do'nt know if It's pure luck? but as long I don't need to pay VAT of 25% I'm happy!

I also ask these vendors to mark my order as a gift with no value declaration on the green US custom slip.

If you do this OTOH, you can't take an insurance for the parcel! :(

Dunno about the gift thing, I had to pay tax on a gift from the states which seriously pissed me off

Yeah I know it differs from country to country (Scandinavians custom rules)

Here in Sweden It's legit to receive a gift from the U.S with an Value of 100$ without paying added taxes! :)

Up to 200$ with my experience they let it through, but I had one parcel checked with an estimated value of 250$ - so I had to pay up! :(

I would do it but I'm from California and subject to 7.5% sales tax.

even that would be a better price picture for him, even if you add 7.5% to
low amerícan price for hardware - It's still a bargain for us Europeans.

If nvidia sells a GFX-card at newegg for 330$, we have to pay 330€ which is insane.
