Hi All,

Long time lurker! I love these forums keep me safe and off the streets :D:cool:

I started this mod before I ordered a lot of parts etc (Dec 07). Got married, promoted went back to University doing night classes and moved house during the last six months so not much progress. But thats all about to change! Hopefully by starting this worklog I will get my build finished instead of half built!

The goal for this mod was to create a functional fully internal water cooled PC thats easy to take to LANs. As my choice of case was based on what I had available I went with a Thermaltake Soprano from my S939 build in 2005.

http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q258/emuexport/DSC01454.jpg

The idea was to front mount a radiator in the front of the case as an intake, hadnt seen it done much in such a small case and I wanted it to all be internal and easy to take to LANs. (I have seen a few questions about front mounted rads so maybe this will help someone decide)

2 x 2GB OCZ Reaper X PC6400
8800GTS 512MB (G92)

Love those heatsinks on the RAM!!!!

In the meantime I have installed the watercooling loop and overclocked to my hearts content using the MCR320.
I ordered a PA120.3 and a MCW60 for the NB as it runs mighty hot when overclocked I have some more stuff on order should arrive in the next few days so I can continue my build. I'll try and take more photos as I go to build this worklog.

Should have an update this weekend.

i always liked that style case... i could never afford the CM Wavemaster though :)

looking forward to the build

Yeah CoolerMaster wavemaster was also my favorite but a little hard to find in Oz!
The Tt Soprano was a good case a few years ago when it came to price etc but noisy fans and long video cards make it a Mod case!

Where the hell do you find the time to go to uni and work and do this? Uni totally owns my life and the 1 day I work a week is my free time lol. [Finished my exams on Thursday so I can stay on here all day haha].

Everything looks pretty good  How long did it take for your order to arrive? Do we get slugged with GST? [I'm thinking of ordering from them]

Oh yeah Flabbergast is under new management now. I hope the new owner keeps up the great service.

emuexport
06-16-2008, 06:01 AM
Tell me about it!

I do on average 45-50 hours a week 2hours commute every day to and from work 3 hours every monday for uni let alone all the study!

I ended up taking a break from uni for a couple of months as work is real intense atm besides the fact that I am trying to get my CPEng at the same time lol

I order thru sidewindercomputers, performance-pcs and petrastech. So far all have been great just plan your buys as shipping is a killer as I am sure you are aware.

With regards to GST I dont think we have to pay GST on items under $1000 atm (dont quote me on that but I read it somewhere and I havent paid any duty yet)

Orders usually take a week to get here.

MomijiTMO
06-16-2008, 06:17 AM
Yeah I think I'll be doing 1 shipment :D. Thanks for the GST help. I guess I'm safe then.

When I finally finish my B Sci/Comm mid 2010, post grad is the last thing on my mind [unless we're in a really bad recession].

emuexport
06-22-2008, 04:52 AM
@mrmaigo: All sanding is done in the garage. Same place where I do the spray painting, cutting etc!

Unfortunately as I have swapped from a MCR320 to a PA120.3 the spacing on the fans have changed so I will need to redo the front of the case as it wont line up anymore with the fans! So it looks like I will have a tri-hole on the front like some mods I have seen (two in most cases, havent ever seen three! ;) )

@xTKxhom3r: Good luck with the soprano case! I struggled to SLI to 7800GXTs which is part of the reason it became spare and available for this mod! :)
Not so much crazy as Xtreme! why not try something different! As this is a LAN comp i dont need much storage one or two Raptor-Xs should be good enough for my games! Still working out how to install the hard drive atm.

Thanks for all the good feedback hopefully it'll turn out sweet! and upgradeable in that all I have to do is upgrade the comp hardware and the WC equipment should do for a couple of years (I have 30cms from the back of the motherboard to the fans on the rad so it should fit almost all cards right (seeing as the GTX280 is about 27cm)!

A question for you guys do you think I should ditch the T-line in favour of either the MC-RES or EK RES250?
(Note: Case is upside-down! to keep those bloody swiftech ram sinks on the GFX card! - Luckily I have an iandh heat sink!)
I have a mock setup shot of the MC-RES the loop would go: RES-Pump-RAD-CPU-GPU-NB-RES
http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q258/emuexport/RAM/DSC01552.jpg
The advantage of this in my mind would be that there would be a nice straight line from the RES to the pump and I would get rid of that T-Line (Keep in mind that I dont plan on pulling my PC apart all the time so ease of access is not paramount)

With the EK RES I would need to shift the pump back a bit closer to the motherboard side to make the inlet and outlet ports line up (I plan on using the bottom ports) I'd also need to increase the RES's standoff from the case so I could still fit a 120 fan on the back of the case as exhaust.
http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q258/emuexport/RAM/DSC01553.jpg

Thoughts?

septim
06-22-2008, 07:40 AM
placement of res above pci slot brackets may hinder getting to your cards...

other that that, yeah ditch the T-line...

nice build btw, giving me some ideas...

armeniandave
06-22-2008, 01:54 PM
I would ditch the the T-Line only personally. I do have a t-line but I only use it to fill and add a little extra capacity. I have my reservoir in line with my pump and it works out well. I will be changing all over to XSPC reservoir tops soon but that's only cause I want to put a 250mm fan on the side of the case. The way I have it now works great.

I'll be ditching the T-line and replacing with a MC-RES. No more OCing till I get this mod finished now I guess! :(

My collection of servers from work, what can I say they were going to throw them out!

http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q258/emuexport/RAM/DSC01562.jpg

Removed all PC components from case, drained WC loop, pulled off the swiftech sinks that hadnt fallen off already! lol

Whats that front slot for??? hmmm Maybe a Scythe Kaze Master?!?!?!

http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q258/emuexport/RAM/DSC01560.jpg

I'm suprised no one asked me yet but I will have a DVD drive in this build, the one place where it can fit snuggly is above the PSU sticking out the back! (Shouldnt be too much of a hassle as the Case will sit on my desk):cool::D

Some cable hiding holes!
Front -should be hidden under the Motherboard

Easier to see from the back!:D

Latest update:

I am selling my 8800GTS 512 to a friend as he wants a cheap upgrade from his 7800GTX 256. So I'll be getting a 4870. I plan on waiting for the 1GB model to come out and see if that provides any real world benefit.

Any preferences on full cover blocks versus the likes of the MCW60? I thought less restriction would be better?

The other update is I plan on using some UV reactive Fesser Tubing instead of Dyes that way I can have distilled and some bleach etc instead of trying to add dye!

I was oringinally planning Metallic Blue on the outside and black interior with Red tubing whatya reckon?

then I thought just make it all blue with black on the inside and blue tubing.

I also have a UV reactive blue window to use.

thoughts?

No UV windows plz, I think it can really ruin the build as you won't be able to see inside the case so well anymore after the cathodes are turned on..

Anyways, looking good so far :)

Thanks.

The only thing is that seeing as I swapped from a MCR320 to a PA120.3 the spacing on the fans is different. I'll have to start again with the front intake and rebondo it. I should end up with three independant blowholes.

Just finished sleeving my 24-pin ATX lead but I'll redo it later as it didnt turn out how i wanted. Will post more pics later on.

Another Update:

I managed to sleeve my ATX lead from the PSU. First time I've ever sleeved anything! I will redo it and some point as I would like to sleeve each individual wire (as per murderbox) this might make it look like fingers coming from under the motherboard! atm the sleeving is black not sure wether i will change it to blue! Sort of heading towards the minimalist view like I saw in Raxxaths mod in the WC case gallery very slick!

Anyways more pics!

Another question for you guys!

As I plan on replacing my 8800GTS with a 4870X2 (still pending results) would it be better to add the MCR320 on the back of the case and put it into the loop like so:
PA120.3--CPU-GPU-NB-MCR320-RES-PUMP ?

or have two independant loops?

I will see what I can fit in tonight when I get home with respect to wether I have enough space for either MCP-655 or MCP 355 both or each loops. Thoughts?

Also need to work out how to fit the RES's in as well.

I have about 30cm between the PCI-backplate and the Fans on the PA120.3 so I should be able to fit a 4870x2 but it all depends on the placement of the second loop if at all.

I really like how you used multiple mesh wire covers on the Motherboard cable. It looks cleaner that a single fat wire cover and probably has better flexibility.

Setup my loop again for some testing etc on saturday and leak tested etc

Didnt use the computer for two days and came back to find my tubes were full of a brown liquid!

I dont think I cleaned the PA120.3, Fusion V2, MC-RES and MCW30 properly the only one that got touched at all was the PA120.3 and I rinsed it with Hotwater only!

Looks like the tubing was growing and it was eating away at my fittings and blocks (Galvanic corrosion). camera is off line atm so no pics

My liquid was made up of some water and bleach from 6 months ago (I dont remember exactly anymore) and some algae killer from the local pet store! (Algae Cure for ponds).

All of my fittings are either D-Tek or EK.

I have now cleaned the loop entirely and flushed the rad!

I hooked up my loop again and when the system was circulating this green-brown water came out at one point into my res. It was at this point that I circulated the fresh distilled and bleech thru the loop pumping the system clean into the drain until it cleared up (4 litres later lol)

I should be back on track for more Case mods to fit it all in the old Soprano case this weekend!

the only part that will delay the completion of the build (and it should be easy to add later) is the 4870X2 depending on performance of course.

Any ideas on the brown-green water after two days? What would have been eating at my fittings and blocks? I'm assuming what I have in my loop is all copper right?

one sad emu - learning the hard way!

left it off last night after running for a few hours and this morning I can see deposits forming at the barbs.

I bet you the Rad is clogged full of that :censored::upset:. Well I will be getting some more Distilled tonight and keep flushing that bastard! I'll have to replace the barbs now as they are all statring to corrode in certain places.

emuexport
07-08-2008, 06:50 PM
Well i just had a chat with one of my mates who studied chemistry at uni (I barely passed it at highschool! lol)

He is worried that the bleech will cause oxidation as that is what it does and doesn't understand why we would use it in a loop full of metals!

The black-Green gunk he believes is caused by the reaction between the bleech and algae killer. I'll do a test tonight when I get home and let you all know!

I cant believe I am such a noob! I didnt use the alagae killer the rest of the time for the last 6-12 months and now I add it and it messed everything up.

MomijiTMO
07-09-2008, 02:24 AM
To be honest I don't even know why you used it. Bleach can be quite a few compounds with different functionality so I can't really comment on what is occurring in your loop.

Well I finished checking my loop again!

For sure my PA120.3 is rusting not sure what the combinations were that caused it. Anyway I have flushed it used some rad flush on it after flushing hot water for an hour. I went and found myself some radiator coolant and put this in with some de-ionised water. Fingers crossed no more rust or corrosion.

I guess this is the joy of getting wet. Well as long as I dont do it again I'll put it down to experience.

Well after procrastinating for ages I have decided that I will put the MCR320 in this build. With some of Martins testing it looks like it would be the best for this rig as otherwise I will have to redo the mounting and front shroud.

As this is a LAN build the MCR320 should be sufficient for a Q6600, NB and VGA (not sure what it will be maybe the 4870X2.....)

I'll keep the PA120.3 for my MM Ascension BDS build (08-09 depending on funds! lol - tax return)

Coming a long nicely. This is so you can mount the fans and rad to the front, correct? Did the new front bezel add significant weight to the build?

Thanks,

Yeah thats right its a giant blowhole (well suck hole lol).

It has added weight but as I cut out a lot of the case it shouldn't be too bad and I have kept it so that it is removable. Hopefully the hinges can still hold it!

Well I got around to spray painting some of the parts this last week so here are some photos.

Still waiting for the 4870X2 war to pan out as surely Nvidia will come back with something and that will lead to a beter price for us all!

Blowhole - not finished just testing the way the colour will look on that much bondo!

And my favorite! I really dont think the photos do it justice but I'll post some more of the finish later.

http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q258/emuexport/DSCF0602.jpg

3 coats of primer with a sand in between the first and second. Then 2 coats of cyan metallic blue then 3 coats of clear coat - then leave for a few days to harden! Its real nice and smooth now maybe a bit of polish lol!

I havent read through the entire thread, but i really like what i see. Yours and my case are almost exatly the same. So i know full well some of the obstacles you've had to overcome. I only had to incorporate a 220mm rad so things were a little easier. Love your progress though. Keep it up!

Well i am pretty happy with my spray painting. it isnt perfect but next time I will do things slightly different. Tell you what tho' adding a few coats of clearcoat really makes the paint seem deeper if you know what I mean! :D:yepp::up:

Anyways here are a few pics! Skipped the reassembly bit though so just a few photos from different angles. I have one panel to finish - side panel with window hopefully I'll get to it tomorrow.

I am waiting on some new tubing reusing some just so I can get up and running for this weekend. Sleeving will arrive soon too so I can tidy up the fan wiring. I'll need to respray the crossbeam as it copped some overspray at some point.

Should be able to take some night pics with UV tonight, I added some fesser cleav/uv dye to my distilled.

I fired up the radiator fans this morning! Whoaahhhhhhh!!! some serious windtunnel! Those High speed yates put out a lot of air! Hopefully enough to help keep the 4870X2 cool when it arrives (Still deciding wether to get that or wait for Nvidias response which must be soon - Can't see them taking it lying down!)

Will do! Man it runs hot!

I plan on getting the 4870X2 wet when a FC block comes out. It will dump a lot of heat into the loop but I'm sure the MCR320 can handle it with 6 high speed yates! If not I'll have to squeeze another Rad in! lol

Just stress testing my Q6600 atm @ 3.2GHz and climbing. 1.3Vcore,8x400, Temps are 32,32,23,21 in CoreTemp0.99 under load with P95 on all four cores.

Yeah I reckon disruptfam! This thing is CPU limited with a 3.2GHz Quad. I think a CPU upgrade might be required so I can have both the CPU, NB and GPU in the same loop (on the MCR320). The back of this card is stonking hot BTW! It gets quite cool if you force it to stay at 65% fan speed but if you leave it on auto it seems like it wants to hurt itself! Surely it doesnt need to be that hot all the time.

I'll be putting it on water soon so we'll see if the MCR320 can handle the heat dump.

Also do you think I have enough power for the following items:Q6600@3.6GHZ (1.5v), 4GB PC6400 2.1V (2 sticks), 4870X2, MCP-655, Sata DVD Slot Drive, 1 WD VelociRaptor, 8 120mm High speed yates. I haven't had any bluescreens after stress testing etc but I would like to know how close I am to 80% of the 620W I can get from the HX620 PSU I have.

Also I dont think I can fit a Corsair PSU and keep the top exhaust fan but I guess that doesnt matter to much! Better to have too much power than just enough.

Cheers,
emu

in which direction does the hot air from the radiator go? Inward, inside the case, or outward, outside of the case?

emuexport
09-07-2008, 04:57 AM
It goes inward, into the case atm.

My 4870X2 water block from EK should arrive soon. No tracking on international orders :( Its been over a week so i guess its on its way. I got some more stuff last week to finish my build and I'll post new pics soon.

Do you think I should swap from the Q6600 to an E8400/E8600? If this is for a gaming computer only?

Yup. Gonna sell your Q6600? The prices have risen so it shouldn't be too hard :)

Nope. I was going to slot it into my HTPC which has an E8400, then put the E8400 in this computer, hopefully I can get 4GHz at least on less voltage than my Quad.

My EK block arrived today for the 4807X2 so that will be going on this weekend. I'm glad it arrived as it took quite a beating on its way down under!

Ek4870X2 block is about 120 euros.

7950GTX2 old? I still have my two 7800GTX (256MB) from SIL on my S939 now those are old. lol

The 4870x2 barely breaks a sweat running everything on max on my 24" @ 1920x1200 (obviously not including crysis) I think a 30" lcd would be needed to really stress this card. It does get really hot though!

Well..... the pump is on its way left the US of A yesterday so hopefully I'll have it in my hands on Friday for me to use on the weekend.

Along with an Apogee GTZ not sure whether that will go on this build or not thoughts? Also got one of those EK D5 tops and some Bitspower 90s etc. thought I might as well get some more things! seeing as getting a pump from the states is still cheaper than getting one here! Even with the current exchange rate. $140AUD+shipping for a D5 in Oz compared to $100AUD+shipping from the states.
1 AUD = 0.799988 USD 1 USD = 1.25002 AUD

I'm thinking I'll re-seat the 4870X2 block as I didn't use any washers on the M3 bolts as it didn't come with any, I'll have to rummage about and see what I can find in my spares.

What sleeveng are you using again? It looks like a nice tight weave!

I hope so too!

The sleeving is from sidewinders (http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/slhe.html) much better than the other packs of sleeving. Shame he doesnt have it any smaller for single wire sleeving (might have to e-mail Gary). Probably not as falshy as the MDPC sleeving but pretty good IMHO

Any ideas on why your pump died? Brand newie or a used one? Did it have some airflow?

Good luck with the rest of the build.

No idea why my pump died only thing I can think of is that I heated the pump a little when I was finishing the sleeving on the end closest to the pump heating the heatshrink! No ideas really pretty bummed about it really as it is new well (10months with only partial usage!)

it had plenty of airflow as I was using it to fill the loop at the time. Same way I always do, fill pump and res with liquid then turn on pump till its just about to suck in air. but this time I turned it on and "no dice".

nice build emuexport. can't wait to see how your front bezel would turn out! just like a sports car intake manifold.
i was curious on how you mounted the hd at the bottom, i hope you don't mind sharing how you did that. thanks.

Update: Shipment just arrived with my new pump and EK top. Will post more photos soon!

@Bianco: I'll post pics with explanation tonight on how I mounted the HDD

@MomijiTMO: Yeah no idea either might have to find a pump guru to help me out with testing it.

Pump works pics to follow soon.

Question is should I swap to the Apogee GTZ or use the DTEK V2? I'm thinking I'll save the GTZ for the next build.

Ambient temp is proabably 15-18 DegC if that helps (not cold or hot)

Water temp increases by about 2.5DegC (after running the futuremark GFX tests). I plan on doing some gaming later so will find out what the water temp balances out at.

But this card runs so cold now, the back of the card used to burn my fingers (well almost) if I touched it while running or just after. Now they are still cool to the touch, admittedly they do have airflow over them from the Rad fans but so did the stock cooler.

Anyways more pics to follow and i would recommend people investigat after-market coolers for these bad boys whether it be air or water they will surely improve the temps on this card IMHO.

Nice work emu! :)

For the BP fittings to seal on the EK res, you need some of these:
http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=203&zenid=74624f5a4f92caab7423d318e305a6c5

I have a few and they work a treat.

Well in light of the current exchange rate I am putting my next major purchase on hold (Ascension Extension BDS).

I have been thinking on how to make my rig a little quieter and cooler as it is crunching 24/7 well at least when I am not gaming (which isnt often atm).

What i would like to do is 'copy' 'modify' twenn2's idea for his SFF and add my PA120.3 to the loop but have it bolted to my desk and disconnect it when I go to a LAN (once every couple of months).

I have two ideas one simpler than the other and probably more feasible!

Add some koolance disconnects to the back of the case and connect it up that way with a bypass loop installed when I am at a LAN.
Using something like this.
http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q258/emuexport/vl3-13bkt_01.jpg

I've also thought about overcomplicating it and adding an extra loop to the mix! just for the VGA with its own pump and res this would be more expensive and take up more room on the back of the PC and obviously be more expensive but maybe better. Possibly more Insane than Xtreme!

I'll take some pics and do some MSPaint skillz work to help explain what I mean!

Comments and ideas needed!

MomijiTMO
10-17-2008, 01:52 AM
The Koolance solution is ideal for a lan build. It's pretty hard and scary to transport this stuff.

Hey when you said you got your licence, what exactly were you talking about? Flying? Boat? Car? Moto? lol

emuexport
10-17-2008, 02:19 AM
But what about my ideas? Which do you think? Keep it as a single loop (easy way) or add another loop.

For LANs I just buckle my case in the seat like its a person and it doesnt budge that way!

I got my 250cc learners for a motorbike, have my 2nd lesson next week.

Please let me know which option you think would work best and why.

Obviously the big blob is a D5

So I have option 1 the cheaper one as all I need are some koolance disconnects
(Apologies for my leet Paint skillz)
Inside layout
http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q258/emuexport/Option-1inside.jpg
outside going to and from the PA120.3 which will be bolted to my desk ala twwen2 style!
http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q258/emuexport/Option1.jpg

option 2 - more of an XtremeSystems option but not necesarily sane! (requires 2 sets of disconnects and another D5)
Inside layout :woot::horse::horse::hammer::hammer::idea::hrhr:
http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q258/emuexport/Option-2inside.jpg
outside
http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q258/emuexport/Option2config1.jpg

And here is the original if you want to make a better suggestion.:yepp:
http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q258/emuexport/DSCF0764.jpg
So the idea is to have 2 separate loops when at home and one loop while at a LAN when sound is not an issue!

help me XtremeSystems you're my only hope! :yepp::up:;):D:rolleyes:

P.s. can you spot what is missing from my loop! Hint can I get away with one of them? I'm thinking now that I will need two still!:shakes:

MomijiTMO
10-17-2008, 04:59 AM
Well me being me would go with option 1 but option 2 should give your cpu more room to do whatever it wants.

emuexport
10-19-2008, 11:55 PM
Yeah Momo thats what I have been thinking! I'd like to put the CPU on the PA120.3 and the 4870X2 on the MCR320.

Just need to think about pump placement and type. Like should I swap to two DDC's or get another D5. What to do about the Res's and loop config. I would still like to be able to have a single loop so would need two sets of disconnects (yes 4 in total).

I really like the dual loop idea as I already have the Rad sitting there with the fans already mounted! I just cant let go of the idea (most recently from twenn2) of adding the rad outside the case!

This will probably add another $500 to the build after shipping lol!

BTW Has anyone sleeved the leads of of a Corsair modular PSU ie individually? and extended them?

Cheers,
emu

twwen2
10-20-2008, 01:13 AM
Option 1 :D

I'm humbled by your wanting to share my ideas.
I like the idea of being able to disconnect the rad for transportation. You'd lose a little water with each disconnection, but that would be easily topped up via the res.

As for the single loop, i'm gonna run an EK Supreme, EK-NB S-Max and EK-FC 4870 all on the one DDC3.2+Top. Talk about restriction!:eek:As if you'll need a 2nd pump! :p:
Martin's estimator says about 1.1GPM. A little lower than i'd like, but should be ok. I'll see what temps are like when i fire the little beast up!

emuexport
10-20-2008, 07:14 AM
OK so single loop for the moment it is. But what about loop order?

D5->MCR320->CPU->QD->PA120.3->QD->4870X2->MCW30->MC-RES->D5
QD=Quick disconnect

Thoughts? I was planning on ordering a heap of BP rotary 45s to help with tight turns so need to work out loop order.

septim
10-21-2008, 03:22 AM
a heap of rotary probably not really needed, maybe 3 at most should be enough for you.

Long time no update.:(

Got really busy with stuff and stopped working on my case. In the meantime I changed the hardware in the build.

I now have the following hardware:

Xeon X3330 @ 3.4GHz (1.2Vcore) just got it so havent finished finding the sweet spot.
DFI DK P45-T2RS-Plus
2 x 2 GB Dominators 1066 CL5

The watercooling got upgraded with a TFC 360 radiator and some awesome BP fittings, some waterblocks for the Mosfet blocks and a new NB cooler.

Anyway here are some pics before I finally get of my ass and finish my build. dingdong keeps putting me to shame with his work. I might have to get him to do my next case!

http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q258/emuexport/RAM/DSCF1177.jpg

Now just to work out how to put it all in the case.

Might see if I can get it powdercoated after seeing the great job dindong got done on his case seeing as it is really only just across the road from my house!

the X3330 is only at 3.4GHz atm with 1.17Vcore and 44DegC with full load.

It needs to be transportable for lans though skinnee thats my dilema and the case I built has such promise lol.
