Was not sure what to call the project but ended up calling it “Big Black Booty”

The reason I ended up giving it this name is because it going to be big, its going to be black and it’s the ideal booty for a pirate of the internet ……..and as a few of you probably already know, there’s nothing better than a “Big Black Booty”.

I built BBB last year, a build thread can be found here:

http://www.watercoolinguk.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=1165

However Big Black Booty is no more........... Let me explain

I recently had a stroke of luck and won an EVGA 750i FTW motherboard on their forum (Jawd_bush), though that was a nearly 2 months ago and I still haven’t got the board yet..... :cussing:

http://www.evga.com/articles/402.asp

Recently I decided to disassemble the case and get it ready more the new motherboard.
The dismemberment of the case and parts went well, not spills or slip ups ..............or so I thought

I put the 680i back into an old Thandalf case with a HSF, which I planned on using until I got BBB back up and running.
However when I tried to boot the system up I got a Bios error telling me it couldn’t recognize the graphics card, tried another card and that was not recognized either

The only way I could get the system to boot up was with an old PCI graphics card........ at least I could access my files and surf the net. :shakes:

When I tried to boot up the next day I was meet with the post error "5f", which I've yet to find a meaning to....... but I assume it means the board is dead, passed on ......F@*king snuffed it. :smoke:
As the board would no longer boot I took it out and removed the chipset HSF for closer inspection.
It would appear that when I was removing the Northbridge bolts from the motherboard I had been careless with the Mini spanner and scratch a few of the PCB tracks between the NB and the nearby PCI-E slot..... I killed the board :hitself:

I only had an old P4 board which didn’t take my sata drives so I went and bought a cheap motherboard, an EVGA 630i board with built in GPU...at least I can access the internet and watch por :hrhr:......I mean access my sata drives :D

So now starts the rebuild, "Big Black Booty Revisited"

The guts of the system are as follows:

CPU: Q6600
GFX: EVGA 8800 Ultra x2
Memory: G.Skill 4Gb PQ DDRII PC8000 x2
Motherboard: EVGA 750i FTW :help:

The water cooling system will be 3 loops as follows:

1) Res (MCRES) ---> D5 ---> PA120.3 ---> D-Tek Fuzion V2 + quad plate ---> Res

2) Res (MCRES) ---> D5 ---> PA120.3 ---> EK-FC8800 ---> EK-FC8800 ---> Res

3) Res (MCRES) ---> D5 ---> PA 120.2 ---> NB ---> SB ---> Mosfet ---> Res

After emptying the case from the previous build I tried cleaning out the dust from the Rads, the things were clogged up solid!

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/Rad_dusty01.jpg

Got most of the dust and fluff out with compressed air, though I had to give them a warm rinse under the shower to get them completely clean..... I'll have to use some kind of dust filters on the new build. :?

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/Rads_01.jpg

For the 3rd Rad I planned on placing it at the back of the case, initially I was going to get a sheet of metal and cut out a hole for the rad.
In the end I found a piece of perforated steel at B&Q which was perfect as it would support the rad as well as act as a radiator grill!......Gave it a quick spray of black and Bob's ya Uncle and Fanny's ya Aunt! :)

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/rear_rad_02.jpg

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/rear_rad_01.jpg

Having 3 loops meant I also had to find room for 3 pumps and 3 Reservoirs.

For pumps I went for D5's, mainly because I already had them .....
For the Reservoirs I went for Swiftechs MCRES-Micro Res.

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/MicroRes_01.jpg

The way I wanted to place the pumps meant that I hand to turn them so that their inputs were at the top, something that the pumps existing holders wouldn’t allow.
Took another trip down to B&Q and bought some L-brackets, they were the perfect fit but not the colour....out with the black spray again.

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/D5_01.jpg

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/D5_02.jpg

Once I had the pump brackets sorted I tried placing the 3 pumps between the front and rear rads, it's a tight fit... but we all like a tight fit right? :bananal:

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/D15_01.jpg

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/D15_02.jpg

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/D15_03.jpg

Tried the Micros and pumps in several places but this seemed the best layout I could come up with.

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/layout01.jpg

Once I was happy with res and pump placement I started on fitting some of the hose, I went for Masterkleer 7/16" Hose on D-TEK 1/2" barbs.

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/PipeWork_01.jpg

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/PipeWork_02.jpg

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/PipeWork_03.jpg

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/PipeWork_04.jpg

At the moment I've come to a grinding halt as I've yet to receive my 750i motherboard and can't continue without it..... :horse:

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/Mess01.jpg

I've had a few bit's to do while I wait, one of them was find suitable grills for the front of the case.
I needed something that would keep out as much dust as possible, which was more important than looks. :yepp:
I found some fan filters that had removable wire mesh fronts, only problem was that I could not find a UK supplier and had to buy them from America. :usa:

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/grill_filter_01.jpg

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/grill_filter_02.jpg

When the system is turned off the filters look more like tea strainers, but with the case on there not so bad.....

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/grill_filter_03.jpg

I ended up spraying all the fan filter black and removing the fan stickers. :wiggle:

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/grill_filter_09.jpg

I also lapped my Q6600, which I'm hoping is still ok.... :wth:

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/lap_CPU.jpg

That all for now, just a few bits more and I can finish the system. :YIPPIE:

There it is! Big Black Booty! :ROTF: thats awesome!. Nice work Marquis. Thinking of lapping my Q6600 too. I'll probably do that afterwards and see the temp difference.

Keep up the good work

Cheers guys, glad your liking it so far

As Disruptfam noted, me and Pellepel are building very similar rigs...which is very useful as we get feed back and advice on 2 threads! :buddies:

In fact I got an idea from Pellepel and his thread
I moved the PSU from the bottom of the case up to the center, however because of the size and weight of the Enermax Galaxy ...... got a bad bow at the back of the case.

The PSU needed some support and luckily I had a piece of perforated steel left over from the PA120.2 backplate/grill.

I shaped the support as best I could, gave it a spray of black paint and used some rubber edging.

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/PSU_stand_01.jpg

It worked out ok, gives the PSU all the support it needs and also gives me somewhere to hide some of the cabling.

It's not perfect though, mainly due to the terrible cable braiding on the Galaxy PSU......... shame on you Enermax! :slapass:

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/PSU_stand_02.jpg

Once the system is nearly complete I can tidy the cable some more, though I not entirely sure that I prefer it in the center.....maybe it was better at the bottom.....

What do you guys think? :argue:

I finally got my prize 750i FTW motherboard from EVGA last week (thanks to Steve Crow ) and was hoping to have the system up and running by now..........Hope springs eternal! :horse:

Once I had removed the stock heatsinks for the NB, SB and mosfet I started to fit my water blocks, this should be easy enough I thought :yepp: ..... I read elsewhere that the EK NB 780, EK NB/SB 6, EK-NF4 rev1.1 and the EK 680i mosfet would fit the board :fact:

The first block I tried was the EK NB 780 which did fit but I had to leave off 2 of nuts so that the block would sit on the chips correctly..... :eh:

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/750FTW_EK-NB780i_03.jpg

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/750FTW_EK-NB780i_04.jpg

The next block I tried fitting was the EK NB/SB 6, the block fitted fine....but it meant that I would not be able to use a GPU in the PCI-E slot, the block was useless!

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/750FTW_EK-EK-NB-SB_6_01-1.jpg

Well at least I have a EK-NF4 rev1.1 block, that's supposed to fit!
I supposed wrong :shakes: The block fitted ok, but again it meant that I would not be able to use a GPU in the PCI-E slot.....if it wasn’t for a component on the motherboard it might have just worked!

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/750FTW_EK-NF4rev11_01.jpg

Well the last 2 blocks were incompatible but I had high hopes for the mosfet block, I read elsewhere that the block fitted "perfectly"

The block did fit the ok, the holes lined up..... But it left a row of mosfet chips exposed

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/750FTW_EK_680i_mosfet_01.jpg

I tried rotating the block and fitting it the other way but it still left a row of mosfet chips exposed

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/750FTW_EK_680i_mosfet_r2.jpg

So thats 3 blocks that was said to fit the board....that can’t :slapass:, I'll wait for photographic evidence before ordering blocks next time :soap:

So the only blocks that I could fit to the board in the end was the 780 NB block and the D-Tek Fuzion V2 :shakes: :help:

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/750ftw_Fuz_NB_01.jpg

Now I have to find a block that will fit the mosfet and SB or find some way of using 3 blocks I tried earler.... :(

So while I wait to get the other blocks I got round to sorting out a few other additions to the build :)

I keep my MM case on my worktop/ table, I like to see it, I've invested too much time in it to hide it under a table! :yepp:
The only problem with keeping it on the worktop/ table is that there is always the chance that it will roll off the table and smash....not good :bsod:

To overcome this I fitted some lockable wheels, which would have been much easier to fit if I had done it at the start of the build!

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/wheels_01.jpg

I had also planned on putting an inline temperature probe in each loop by connecting a D-Tek Inline Temperature Sensor to a LCD temp display.
I used and old beige drive plate, which I modded to take 3 LCD displays and then sprayed black.

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/Temp_disp_01.jpg

I removed the sensors from the LCD temp Displays and replaced them with the D-Tek sensors.

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/Temp_disp_02.jpg

I tried putting the sensors into a cup of water to see if they work ok, not perfect but should do the job...

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/Temp_disp_03.jpg

Well why I've been waiting to get the system finished I've been using air cooled system......

So this weekend I decided to get the CPU wet and get a small over-clock going, using parts over from previous builds......

I made a simple loop using the following:

D-Tek Fuzion V1
Swiftech MCR220-QP Dual Radiator
1/2" barbs with Masterkleer 7/16" tubing
Thermaltake 400 L/hr Liquid Pump (ok stop laughing!)

Got the E6600 overclocked to 3.2 GHz at the moment but will try and get it higher later!

Nice Marquis definitely like what u did with temperature probes and LCD.

I'm trying to figure out a way to use my temp probes to test the waters. I'm thinking of just sticking it the fill port.

wow some great stuf I have been waiting with just my cpu watercooled n my 750i till I knew for sure what blocks will work.

Be sure to post a list for the board when you find all the correct blocks for the Evga 750i

Also like your idea for the temps, I use 2 TT T-type water temp indicators and velcrowed them to the side of the 5 1/4 trays for the side windows..
but i might merge all them in a front mount...

excellent

Had the new SB-VGA-790i delivered this weekend!

The block will fit two ways..... but only one way will work ok....

This way looked ok.....

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/ek_sb_vga790_03.jpg

Until I tried to fit an 88000 ultra with an EK waterblock :shakes:

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/ek_sb_vga790_07.jpg

One of the barbs was hard against the GFX waterblock

I turn the block so that the barbs would be under the GFX card.....

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/ek_sb_vga790_09.jpg

With a GFX card fitted it's a very tight to the GFX card and large 1/2" compression/ fat/wide boy barbs will probably not fit......

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/ek_sb_vga790_05.jpg

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/ek_sb_vga790_04.jpg

With 1/2" D-Tek barbs there seems to be enough space for 7/16" hose  maybe 1/2" (3/4" OD) hose!

I wouldn't want to use Steel Worm Drive clip on these barbs, shorting on the GFX card would be a sure thing!

Now that the SB block was sorted I needed to get the mosfet block attached.

I decided to use the 680i mosfet block with a small copper plate underneath it, necessity is the mother of invention....or so they say! :hammer:

I got myself a 3mm copper plate and cut it to go between the mosfet block and mosfets.

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/copper_sheet_01.jpg

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/copper_sheet_02.jpg

The copper plate was cut large than the base of the mosfet block so that it would cover all the mosfets.

I used thermal tape to attach the plate to the bottom of the mosfet block; with the copper plate attached it was necessary to use longer screws to fix the block to the motherboard. :yepp:

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/680_mosfet_01.jpg

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/680_mosfet_02.jpg

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/680_mosfet_03.jpg

At last I had all the motherboard blocks fitted, time to get some pipe work done!

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/750FTW_allblocks_01.jpg

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/PipeWork_05.jpg

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/PipeWork_06.jpg

Now that the pipe work is all finished and hopefully secure...... it's time to fill her up :hrhr::toast2:

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/Jawd_Bush/PipeWork_07.jpg

I'll let it bleed for the rest of the evening and start on getting the wiring connected and tidied tomorrow :yawn2:
