card out for something else. i was thinking about just using a mcw-60 which
would be too bad

Here's some inspiration for you at (if I may say) the best SFF forum out there:

http://www.sudhian.com/index.php?/forums/viewthread/95399/P600/

Scroll down a bit to see the finished build. It's a very long build-log, but a good read.

(it's a heavily modded SG01)

thanks!

i installed the fuzion yesterday and got alot of wire modding to do to make this build as clean as possible.

stuff to do:

1. short 24pin ATX cable
2. 2x short pci-e cable
3. extend sata power cable
4. redo cable management (front i/o cables)
5. fabricate pump mount (easy to remove)
6. custom res (possibly part of the window)
7. lighting effects (probally UV because i got unused cathos from homewrecker)
8. mount rad (need to heavily mod side panel)
9. paint interior (black "night")
10. theres more just cant think of them right now

And do you have to sacrifice one HDD for the tubing?

What, you can't fit all three fans side-by-side?

And do you have to sacrifice one HDD for the tubing?

no, the fans can sit in there side by side, im not sure how the tubing
is going to run yet, so its just an option.

im working on a quick drawing to show you guys what im going to do
to make the rad install more clean. pretty much im going to extend
the case, and i also decided where to put the window

update:

radiator is mounted, was easier then expected. next is to
cut the side panel, which should be reality easy as well
so far so good, looks like i might get in to some trouble with
the pump, i can always go DDC if i need to. hopefully tonight
after work i can get started on the side panel. i want to get
this baby up and running soon so i can do some tests with
the quad nozzle. hopefully martin get a review in on that

i would test it out side of the case but my space is too messy
so the sooner i finish the better. plus got the other projects to
finish.

thanks for stopping by

nice work evil! more :)

Thanks! spent a whole lot of time yesterday but didnt get much
done, remounted the pump multiple times, and in the end had
to move the HDD from its cage to the 5.25" bay, which is fine
previously i had the pump mounted to the side of the 5.25" bay
with the HDD in the cage which was nice, but the GTX wouldnt
fit  so after hours of trial and error, i decided to do what
ive always done. put the pump on some foam and call it a dat

Thanks guys, heres the update for today:

started modifying the case, the side is cut and
i started the window. its a rough cut and all were
cut with a nibbler which is pretty tedious to use...
but i did finish the rough cuts. started to route
the tubing, which im still not sure how im going
to do, as of now i got to elbows for the fuzion but
that might be changed in the future. this is a mock
up, but it looks as if im out of options. i might use
coils but ive had nothing but trouble with them.
they break and are quite brittle. i was hoping to find
some metal coils i could use but ive been out of luck
the elbows fit perfectly with the clearance that i do
have between the fuzion and the psu. but there ugly
lol, though they are hidden, id like to make it look
better then that. i just need to test the system. so
ill probably change the elbows to something else in
the future. well see, but this is what ive got for now.
i might move to a res, or make a res, but i have no
funds, think someone would sponsor me a res? a short
"T" right to the inlet of the D5 is suicide (cavitation)

well thanks for check this out.

Thanks, things are getting complicated. i can't mount the fillport
and im going to need a res. the micro res looks to be my best
option next to making my own res. the cost of making my own
res will probably cost more, but should yield better options and
placement. this is tough! but its fun :) im going to repaint the
white of the case and paint the interior a nice black, also the
frame of the rad is going to be painted white as well. i want to
do something with the front of the case, theres alot of room
there, and i might switch fans for some ultra kaze 3000. ive got
more then enough room. i also really want a mcw60. too bad
theres no nice ram plates for the 8800gtx. hopefully ill be picking
up a different card, though i doubt it. maybe ill as iandh for some
assistant there.

just the bay cover it came with. i cut off the ears attaching itself

it opens, which is nice  i might reglue the the cover its a bit

Evil,
Ive been thinking along similar lines to your build and its given my heaps of ideas, Im not normally one for external rads either, but i think its coming along nicely regardless!
there is clear tubing out there with inbuild metal coils, it may help, but be warned its highly strung so when its bent tight it has ALOT of pressure on it, also its hard to cut.... and hard to slip onto barbs because the tubing has little give has the coils prevent it. I hope this helps you out mate.
as for the idea with the micro res.... I LOVE IT! cant wait to see the pics, as I have a micro laying around somewhere in my room (have to find it) and im thinking now that ive seen u get a D5 in there, maybe i should keep my DB-1 for something else and use my spare D5.
anyway love the work, keep the logs and pics coming mate

WOW!!! man this is looking nice and evil, evil. ;) :p:

keep up the good work mang!!

One thing I'd like to point out to you. Your GTX will only be sucking in the hot air from the radiator, which will result in your GTX getting very hot, which will also result in giving off a lot of heat in the case + the heat from the radiator, which will result in a hot case, which will result in hot hardware, which will result in high temps. :D :D :D :D

Science lesson for the day!!!! :p:
JK lol, you should be fine, my only concern would be the video card, maybe try something else?

Edit:
Whoa, I just got a better idea!!! Get an Accelero S1 (http://www.petrastechshop.com/accoacs1re2.html) cooler and run it without a fan on it, the fans from the radiator will be cooling it!

Also, I'd consider a different video card? G92 maybe?

Edit 2:
OR
You could get an HD3870X2 and buy my waterblock for sale (see sig) and watercool it too!!! :D :D
I'm sure your rad will handle it.

haha, thanks

as for the vid card, i know its going to be sucking up some nice warm air
but im sure its going to be ok, as for the 3870x2 its too long, going to run
right into my D5 which the GTX barely clears  i think im going to just
pick up a mcw60, unless i can find a sponsor. good luck with selling the
block though, im sure someone needs one around here

i was thinking about air cooling it but i think it would look funny from the window. id like to water cool the gpu but im low on funds (kanye west

evil nice project bro, but some advice,

You NEED TO SEAL COPPER 90's when used as a OUTLET.

2 things can happen, it can pull air in because there is no lock on copper 90's. Its smooth.

Another problem is at the inlet. IF you provide enough pressure, that 90 will slip off over time.

http://forums.anandtech.com/messagev...&enterthread=y

Heres a member i warned the same thing about. And look what happened.

Heres how i did mine, just use silicon and seal the edges. Its messy but it works.

cut rings inside the copper then and use zipties.

You need a groove something to trap air.

copper tube cutters, and just make rings around it.

Solution 3. Thats how i was gonna do it the next time around. Grab some copper tube cutters, and just put 3 groves on it.

You can try worm gear clamps on the copper elbows. A slight problem can arise near the video card and can be easily solved by putting a piece of plastic between the video card and the clamp.

its been a while and heres the update. everything is up and running, nothing is final

i cant really test my quad nozzle... im going to reseat the cpu and block but so far the
only thing im not liking is the stuck sensor, extremely warm mobo temps (before i strapped
on the 2x 92mm) and not being able to install the supreme fx II, it keeps telling me the

looking good man

just one thing, you might have a hard time filling up with the inlet to the pump being set up like that, I've had set up my Laing D5 like that and the coming back from the loop wouldn't return back into the inlet of the pump.
but let us know how you go

yea it took awhile but i got it to full eventually. i just screwed
in a fitting to the top of the fillport and added a foot of tubing
and just filled it like a normal Tline so it wasnt that bad

cant wait to get a hold of that res!

thanks again pvtdonunt, ok guys i got the res!
no more this Tline madness.. got some ideas for the
res, just need to get the right drill bit size! 11.8mm is
hard to find and ordering is just to expensive

theres a weird stain that i cant get out. looks like its
worked its way into the acrylic and/or between the
glue, ideas? ive tried to clean out the res, but its hard
so i just gave it a nice bath in some warm water and
soap.

for sure the top is going to get rethreaded for G1/4
and the bottom is going to be tapped as well. just
need to think of a interesting way to mount it.

eww, i never liked hydryx, i use all the left over hydryx i can on client builds

anyways, im going to retap the top for G1/4 as said so the cap isnt going to be an issue.

i need to tear down the rig some time this week, im RMAing the CPU i cant live

newegg gots the Q9550 in stock, looks like a nice cpu too bad it wasnt out when
i bought the 9450.. lol oh well, the new procs is alot faster then my 6850

i bought a palm sander so i can start prepping for paint asap, havent decided

yea the loop is fully bleed right now, i havent installed the mcres without
tell you guys  all i did was added a fitting to the top of the fillport
and a foot of tubing to fill, so it extends the Tline, so its not that short

the loops tiny anyways and the thing isnt that heavy, so i just plugged
the end of the tline and rotated the machine (its a good 35+lbs)

im still looking for a 11.8mm drill bit that is affordable.. i have 11.4 and

I have that exact set, and man, do they work well. Just remember, the 1" isn't 1", it's 1.35" the 3/4" is actually 1.08" :) They are for electricians. They are to make holes in the metal circuit boxes for conduit. Hence the larger than listed sizes. Just for reference:

1/2" = .86" or 22.2mm
3/4" = 1.08" or 27.5mm
1" = 1.35" or 34.4mm
1 1/4" = 1.69" or 42.9mm

actually the sound card doesnt work, its from my striker board
im still trying to get it to work but the card recognizes the board
and refuses to allow me to install the correct drivers. so i looked
for soundmax drivers by them selves, but then board doesnt
recognize the sound card, then i disabled internal sound, then window
says theres no HD audio drivers.. it just keeps going and
going and going.. still looking for a solution, but for now i have the

Gday evil

I'm looking at doing a very similar build to yourself. I'm wondering, was it at all possible to fit an MCR-220 internally in the same position as you fitted the 320?

Thanks

evil-98
07-01-2008, 05:08 PM
its possible, but theres a quite a bit requirements

you can fit one as long as you dont have a graphics
card, or if you extend the pci-e to the first slot and
the card needs to be single slot. but yea its definitely
able to fit a mcr220 internally

Statts
07-01-2008, 05:14 PM
Ok, well I will be using a single slot 8800GT (probably with MCW60 or FC block).

What is this extending to the first PCI slot you talk of? Some kind of adapter card?

the speakers work amazingly well, there going to be mounted either on a
matching face plate, or somewhere else on the case, but it looks pretty
cool were it is right now, as of now the speakers are set as my center
which is nice, so i can have multiple outputs, and yes its a 4870! its pretty
nice but my 8800 gts's feel better overall, none the less this is one kick
ass lan rig (if i ever lan...)

but heres whats going down

now that i have the 4870, interior is going to be light red, which means

1. need red LEDS, probably like 10 of them

2. red tubing or tygon + red coolant, probably red tubing because i have
no experience with coolants and if there reliable. unless someone can
suggest some good coolant, feser looks nice, but is the red, well red?

3. need to finish cables, i need to shrink that 24 pin, things are getting messy

4. outside stays white, inside may be black, and possibly red but black is
what i probably will go with to keep the idea of day and night

5. need to find a better place for the pump, or switch it out for a DDC
i need to get that drive back in the cage, because i going to put 2 single platter
320s in the system when finished, if there isnt enough space i might have to
move the fans outside! :(

6. wish i could get a 4870X2 (but the 4870 was sponsored so im not complaining)

Your build is coming along nicely. A red interior with a white exterior would look great so long as you don't have too many windows [or the red will become too dominant].

Lookin' good Bro, I'm really digging those speakers up front. What's going in the lower bay, optical drive? I vote more speakers! :)

more speakers!? maybe  depends, and the lower bay cover is the optical drive

http://evil98.insanity-asylum.com/computers/dayandnight/36.jpg

though i wish i could just make a double bay cover and just cover up the drive
the bay cover over the drive looks tacky, and i dont want that.. :( i wish i had
gotten the a manual mill like i intended too.. anyways

the system wouldnt boot yesterday (bad PSU cable, one if the pins keep getting
loose) so i took that as an opportunity to tear the rig open and redo a few things
first the D5 is out of the picture, obviously the 8800GTX, and the HD being mounted
in the 5.25" drive bay, migrated the drive to the original HD caddy and added
another so theres a total of 2x WD320AAKS hopefully the raid control on the
board will suffice for the task of putting them in a raid 0. so the HD are in and
i got just enough room to mount a DDC, so heres the update guys.

C&C welcome

still need opinions on the previous update

1. red tube or red coolant
2. red interior or black interior

oh and the tracers are coming in today  newegg is like down the street

but obviously in a nicer and more linear manner

so the rising sun will be cut out, then layer with some red
acrylic which is then LED lite from behind, will double as
as a power light or HD status with a switch

also i want to fab a double bay cover which hides the drive
and the top bay can house the speakers in a nicer fashion

hopefully if all goes well, ill be adding another tool to my

evil, how did you use the drive bay cover on your DVD drive? Obviously you ground down the locking tabs, but how do you get the eject button to work?

i took off the original face plate but left the tray cover, hot glued the bay
cover on to that, then extended the switch with a small plastic rode, the
bay cover is flexible enough to allow me to push the button. you can see
all that on the first page.

Evil, have you considered painting the rad white? And if you are going witht he rising sun theme, maybe get the fins painted in red?

hey pvtdonuts, yea that was part of the original plans, but im going to leave
the rad fins black, im just going to put a mesh filter over it and paint that white

yesterdays update:

Made the micro res that pvtdounts so kindly sent me,
um even more micro  after alittle cutting and sanding
and glue i had a mini micro res only bad thing is when
bonding the 2 layers of plexi i did not apply sufficient pressure
to the center quick enough before it bonded.. everything else
was perfect but the center of the 2 layers is obviously screwed..
i may attempt to repair it if i can find someone with a bent sander
so i can just sand it off instead of attempting to cut it.. unless someone
has a ban saw

added a back plate behind the pump to hide the ugliness of
the frame, and added a plate in the back to cover up the
hole where the tubes enter. contemplated weather or not to
added a fill port, so i started drill it out, needed to pick up
my 1"+ step bit at work.

Todays update:

So i started off with changing out the fan on the PSU, i
love this fan, and its white  anyways needed more flow
over the mobo and this was a tremendous improvement over
the ADDA fan in the PSU, which is another favorite fan of
mine, really good pressure coming from those fans. anyways
just wired it directly to the 12v line, and added the fan controller
to the back if ever needed:rolleyes:

got some more goods, sponsors dropped off a much better
sound card  and its got a red LED in it! :yepp: anyways
it didnt clear the MCW30 so i had to remove the bottom screw
which made the cover bend so i used a ziptie inplace of the
screw untill i can find a very low profile m3.5 screw

some small bits here and there, installed a hiper red 80mm fan
to the HD cage, its not bad, its quiet and expected CFM coming
from such a small/thin fan.

made new sata power cables, short ones, and got some short
sata cables, things are coming together.

leak tested the res, no leak but some spillage.. over filled the res
and it dripped all over my ram and HD  no big, there out
drying now and should be fine.

and I did notice the 'rising sun' in each picture, but to me that looks cool, tho after what you said I gave it some thought and how about wrapping the case with the rising sun, so its a complete sun?? just another Idea, I really want to see the outside match the 'WOW!' factor of the inside... and maybe, and this is a MAYBE, like the sun you use in your pictures, have it missing lil bits and pieces as if it was splattered with something that ate through it?? just a thought

all are up in the air. well see when i get around
to that part. for now interior is a priority
im going to pic up paint today, my feser
tube comes in on monday, hopefully well have
the interior painted and done by then so i can focus

Lookin' good Bro.

I'm digging those ribbon led strips big time. My supplier sells them and I have always wondered about them. They appear to give off a nice amount of illumination - not too much, not too little. After seeing how you've implemented them, I'm a hafta get me some. :yepp:

Looking forward to the next update with the Feser tubing. :)

yea the strip LED is very convenient  12vdc + 3M tape on the back
i should be getting my next set of LEDs on monday as well as the feser.

i might split up the strip so i can use it on multiple areas but the even
glow maybe too appealing for me to want to change it.

i bought my paint yesterday. weather isnt to good and i cant get time
in the booth anymore.. (car crash season?) so im going to build a small
cardboard box booth  lol no i just need a clean place to spray

find my rivet gun first. im not sure if i should
un rivet it or not. i need to do some more fabricating
before dismantling the case thats for sure.

but tomorrows update should be some what exciting
to some. but untill then thanks for stopping bye

Love the idea, evil, though I have to admit I prefer the look of the rising sun, not the whole sun. Maybe part of the sun showing in the bottom left of case front, with the rays eminating as you have them there

Evil I would like to see what Statts has suggested, just so we have something to compare against, which will maybe lead to more ideas....
ohhh and please tell me your gonna wrap the entire case with the rays....
ohhh wait!!!
What if you had the sun in a corner which wrapped around onto the side and continued up the side of the case!!! THAT WOULD LOOK AWSOME! :D

update:

havent updated in a while, not much progress been super busy
but progress is progress. not much to say, the case design is
still up in the air, my main goal right now is to finish the interior
which proves to be an issue untill i can get all the water cooling
parts in. i did receive the feser tubing and all my LEDs, just dont
have enough time in the day to get it all done at once. i spent a
few hours making that dual 45mm fan mount, did it twice, broke
the first one, this one came out alot better but im unhappy with
one of the big circle, my vice squeezed it too much and it warped
the shape so its a slight oval...

cheers

Hey, I know it's a little late in the game to ask this (no one ever said I was fast  ) but could you go in more detail about how you did this? I would love to try this and make a micro micro res, but have no idea what tools/glue/skills would be needed.

If you don't want to waste your thread space, could you shoot me a PM?

Pleeeeeeaaaaasseeee???? :yepp:

its simple really, these are the tools that you will need

tools:

1. saw (hack saw, scroll saw, band saw, dremel, etc)
2. squaring tool (30, 60, 90 triangle, etc)
3. file, sand paper, etc
4. IPS Weld-On #4 (super glue, 2 part epoxy, etc)
5. measuring tool (ruler, caliper, etc)
6. clamps (vice, spring clamps, c-clamps, etc)
7. some wood for clamping
8. obviously some plexi (i used 2 piece of .125" plexi and glue it together)

what i did was measure the distance i wanted to cut with my calipers, marked it, squared it, set it up on a miter block and cut it straight.

lapped the end that i cut flat and clean with 150 grit sand paper and deburred the ends with a knife (backwards technic)

then i measured the end of the opening that i cut and marked it down on the plexi, squared it up and sanded it smooth.

then i made a small jig from some wood and just glued it together and clamped it down

easy  probably missed some steps but you get the point

speaking of sound card, did you take that supremeFX II sound card from another asus mobo? i thought that sound card was only specific to the mobo it came with and wouldn't work with anything else. well, waiting to see how you solve this xfire and soundcard problem.

Fair enough, I knew it was probably a stupid question at the time (having not read through the thread :p:) but I just couldn't be sure considering this is a SFF build and there are some that just want the low temps/stock clocks in a cramped space.

update

i got a Q9550 (C1.. wish it was a E0) and a slot feed dvd burner
worst part is i got 2 stuck sensors... what is up with that? super
bad luck or something? i hate that.. one of the reasons why i tried
to RMA my Q9450.. i had 1 stuck sensor and now i got 2! its so annoying...

and im getting some REALLY weird temps, but i can trust them because
of the sensors :(

you think sensors ever unstuck themselves?
anyways, i put a fatter heatsink on the NB and it loads at 35C (via smart guardian)
havent decided where to put the rom yet, maybe side ways next to the PSU

well see, cheers

you guys think a MCR320 could handle a Q9550 (OCed moderately probably like @ 4...) and the two 4870s... ha

unless my CPU stays on AIR  which i rather not... lol

i wish sleeping wasnt so nice.. i stay up to 3 banging and drilling in my room

hey evil, what brand slimline drive is that? I was looking for a Panasonic UJ875 slimline slot loader, but went with a Sony/NEC sata tray loader instead, out of placement and dust concerns. I'm excited to see how you will mount it, will it be internal?

I'm not sure if you've already ordered that JAE adapter yet, but I found this:

I'm also planning on getting that drive you got and buying this adapter.
But I've got a question, if you've tested the drive out of course, how fast is it?
Is it reasonably fast?

made sure it functioned correctly. seems relatively fast, didnt have
any issues installing/reading from a disk. i havent burned with it yet
but ill get to it.
