Hey guys,

My computer was getting really dirty due to not having my sidepanels on for like 5 months. So I decided to clean everything out properly, including my water loop.

My Apogee GTX was dirty from all sides.. the mounting surface as well as inside:

I left it in ketchup for a while. Although I think it might have been a bit too long, I forgot about it and it was in there for about a day and a half... Could that have been too long?

Anyway the mounting surface is still shiny, but it now looks like this:

I can see a feint spot where the cpu had contact.. Could it have been caused by TIM residue? Also the ketchup mixture turned slightly blue which indicates a reaction with the copper. The spots are not coming off with the Arctic Silver cleaning stuff.

The insides are fine, so it won't matter much for performance I guess?

PS: Regarding stepped bases:

the MCW60 and ApogeeGTX bases are the same in measurements and mounting threads/holes.. The mcw60 one however has a stepped base.. Is this worth looking into? Or is the pin design on the GTX drastically better performing?

Yeah the ketchup is supposed to be on for like 30 minutes...

Try soaking in hot soapy water and see if that helps things any.

looks like the ketchup etched the base. shouldnt hurt performance but thats still not cool

Heh I figured. I walked into the room and smelled the ketchup, asking myself. Why the HELL does it smell like ketchup? (Thought I spilled it on my clothes or something..) But yeah the bowl was still sitting in the corner of the room haha.

Well, it seems like it's time to get a D-tek v2.

get some toothpaste with a old toothbrush to take of the bits ..

apply a bit scrub .. then rinse ... repeat as desired

try not to stay scrubing too long coz it might thinning the copper .. enjoy the mint

You're supposed to have left it for less than one minute! I use ketchup for only 10 to 15 seconds.

Toss the water block. Its no longer of any use. Time to buy a FuZion V2.

I'm in the middle of selling a lot of my components anyway. Going to upgrade most of it in a few months.

No don't toss it, it'll still function OK. Perhaps not as well now that the surface isn't as smooth anymore but you could still use it for something like a cruncher :D Or try lapping it if the surface is really rough.
