Well finally after 3 months of reading all those watercooling guide, I decided to start my first watercooling adventure this month. This project will be named Toaster since I had my Cosmos S case modded with running lights in front similar to those Cylon Toaster models in BSG tv series (which I am a die-hard fan).

1st Week

Started off with ordering parts from various online stores: Petras, Performance-PC, DangerDen, EK Waterblocks, GAMMODS and Frozen CPU. Take note that I am from the Philippines so yeah, overall costs I spent is almost double the cost of those parts geez!

3nd Week

Parts arrived after 2 weeks:

http://homepage.mac.com/npasamonte/water/wcset2.gif

http://homepage.mac.com/npasamonte/water1.gif

Temporary Air-Cooled setup to "break-in" the parts and prayed that all of them are working, for international rma process will be a pain in the butt. Fortunately all of 'em are working 100% :D

http://homepage.mac.com/npasamonte/water/wcset3.gif

3rd week

I then had my cosmos-s sent to the best case modder in town here in Manila, Philippines for some paint-job, powdercoating and some custom fitting for the thermochill rads.

Had my setup on nekkid mode and continued with air-cooled break-in while my case is being modded.

4rd Week - Current

Finally after 3 weeks, the last and the most important part of my setup the Tygon B-44-3 tubing arrived (I actually thought that it was lost in transit due to the delay).

http://homepage.mac.com/npasamonte/water/day1/tygon.jpg

Air-cooled break-in is over, started to install the water blocks, some wire-sleeving and pump conversion:

As for the Cosmos S, here are some shots taken by my case modder (TantricModz of TPC.com) - Both Thermochills 120.3 and 120.2 plus the pumps already installed ready for leak testing this weekend.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/tantricmodz/project%20cyclon/projectcyclon05.jpg

Take note guys that I had the top cover with the red line of the case modded with some LED tracers in them similar to Cylon (a.k.a.Toaster) eyes

That's it for now, will update this worklog again for latest developments. At the moment I am stuck on how the tubing will run inside the case. I am having some difficulty since if possible I am preventing to use elbows on the loop.

Hopefully will be able to finalize the loop order today or tomorrow and start leak testing this weekend.

Geez! Didn't know watercooling is so time consuming but exciting at the same time. I can barely get enough sleep recently

Yeah, TantricModz is one of our best if not, the best case modder here in Manila. All i did was tell him what I want to be done to the Cosmos S and he took care of the rest.

This design is exactly what I visualize from the start, its perfect!

The outer paint finish and chrome will definitely still be better once I clean, wax and buff 'em as the final step ;)

:D Yeah, guess we both like the same black and little chrome combination on the Cosmos S. He does take the credit for being first on doing it, I'm not contesting about that since most of the design from this case are from designs I saw from various watercooling forum galleries, XS included

black is a pretty common color for a case. no surprise that someone out there will have a similar color theme. especially if you guys have the same case too. still both works are awesome! keep it up!

5th Week update:

Well I was able to finally finish the tubing runs and started leak testing last weekend. Here's a pic:

http://homepage.mac.com/npasamonte/water/leaktest.jpg

Unfortunately guys, that pic will be the last that you'll be seeing for now with the SIIE installed since after the leak test, the mobo decided to fail on me

Was happily testing out the system last monday after the 24-hour leak test and all of a sudden the OS hanged and went downhill from that point on. It went very unstable after that to the point that there is no BIOS post at all. LCD Poster is stuck to "CPU INIT" which is then I realized that my mobo is dead based on reviews I have read about this mobo.

I ruled out any leaks from my tubes nor the blocks for there is no sign of it, I also can't imagine my 7/16" ID tubes on 1/2" barbs to be dislodged at any point.

As of today I was able to successfully removed the motherboard from the case and the loop. Tried to resuscitate it by putting back the default fuzion blocks and run it from the cardboard, reseated the cpu/memory/gpu but also no go, its officially dead and being prepped now to be RMA'ed. (which might take more than a month since I have to ship it back to the US)

This will probably delay my toaster project, I'm disappointed actually but I am not giving up. I have 2 options:

Option 1: Buy an XFX 790i motherboard (available locally) which means I will only be able to watercool the CPU and GPU only since my mosfets, nb, sb blocks are not compatible.

Option 2: Buy an Asus Rampage Formula (available locally) which means I can use the mosfet and nb blocks but I will not be able to use my DDR3, thus I will have to buy DDR2 1066 (which are cheap already anyway). SB might just be passively cooled.

Getting another Asus Striker II Extreme is not an option since it is not available locally :(

Might just go with option 1 but feel free to chime in if you have any other suggestions.

:shakes:

DIE-TEMP
06-04-2008, 03:38 AM
yes option one. It's a shame to spend $4000 and have nothing for it. A month wait to get another mobo sux, but then so does having all those parts and no pc to use :(

I'd go with the XFX mobo and get that thing running asap......if you wait much longer new tech will be out and your toaster project will be toast.

ouchie. did you test that mobo before watercooling? maybe you forgot to wire something up?...

MomijiTMO
06-04-2008, 04:43 AM
I say ditch the 790i boards all together. I have grown tired of 'bad board' threads and I think it's like a 50% infant death rate. That isn't acceptable.

Gunther04
06-04-2008, 04:46 AM
Yeah Die-temp, I spent $4000+ on this and ended not having to use it at all sucks big time.

Yes sir septim, I did test the mobo for 1 week before I set it up for watercooling. I am 100% sure I got all the wirings set.

I will have to buy the mobo locally sir knet if possible, I don't want to risk getting another lemon and rma it abroad the 2nd time :(

Ditching the 790i is really one best option i'm thinking now, that is why my second option is to go with x48 chipsets since I only plan to use 1x 9800 GX2 anyway.

septim
06-04-2008, 05:08 AM
use DFI x48 mobo... i am sure you can get 1 from sir woody & a couple of velociraptors to boot...

knet370

@gunther

sir, i believe sir woody sells them locally. and i think he has them instock. check sir woodys ifs or pm if you still want a sIIe.;-)
also keyplayah..

if you plan to go x48, i suggest the foxconn blackops..which happens woody has them instock too..

@emoners: Ugh! I don't even want to remember the pain I went through sleeving all those cables. Till now my fingers are still sore from it but the end result was great, loved how clean the cables are now.

@ Serpentarius: I actually said in my previous post that i'm not quitting this project mate, it will just be delayed ;) and yes I am having the mobo rma'ed and ship it back to the US. I even have to resort buying a new mobo, either the XFX 790i or the new BlackOps just to have this thing finished and done already.

sleeving them individually is really a pain... arthritis and rheumatism... ouch ouch...

Gunther04
06-06-2008, 11:36 PM
Some Updates:

I decided to temporarily get an XFX 790i mobo while I ship the *$(&#!#$#@!!! dead Striker II Extreme back to the US for RMA. I was able to complete the setup last night and happily able to post/boot without any glitches nor problems.

Since this is a reference 790i my EK mosfets, northbridge and southbridge blocks are useless so they're temporarily kept till the SIIE replacement arrives (hopefully in 4-6 weeks: knowing Asus support etc.)

It is almost 90%, still missing are the red LEDS and some minor cleaning here and there. The Raptor X window acrylic has been temporarily removed for a redesign.

Ok guys, will not delay this project any further. Here are some "almost" complete Toaster pics.

Will do some prime test later, but I was able to play some COD4 and had no problems

Temps @ 3.8GHZ

IDLE: 45c
LOAD: 57c

Though I will probably lower it down to 3.6Ghz for regular use, I'm just trying to push it a little ;)

I do expect for this setup to handle high OC without problems since my 120.3 is now dedicated only to the CPU. (originally it was suppose to handle both CPU and NB) and the 120.2 for GPU only (originally GPU+SB+Mosfets)

Still im not even sure if I am putting the right numbers for the overclock lol.

http://homepage.mac.com/npasamonte/water/loop1.jpg

Since the mosfets/nb/sb EK blocks are not compatible with the reference 790i board that I got, this is basically what is in my 2 loops:

Loop1: Dual Bay Res > Pump > 120.3 > CPU

Loop2: MicroRes > Pump >120.2 > GPU

As for the bottom rad, Had to use 1 drive bay and had the bottom part cut off

Hi Mate and what a nice job you have done. I have also just got my self the Cosmos S and some water-cooling. I am also going to be changing the colour to black, but I have a question.
I am also going to be getting it powered coated and wanted to know what you did about the door rails and locking Mechanism. Did you remove them by drilling the pot rivets out or did you leave them in.
If you left them in how has it effected the why the locking Mechanism works ?

What an awesome Cosmos. Great job.

The thread title totally caught my eye, as I always thought the Cosmos looked like a toaster. There was a chrome-polished one at a Cebit show awhile ago that reminded me of one of those chrome Sunbeam toasters from the 60's. Would love to see a Cosmos with a couple DVD players mounted with the slots at the top of the case. With a big plastic slider on the front to load and eject the discs, which would pop out of the slots a bit when ejected, just like toast.:p:

I was just gonna ask that! If you don't mind me asking what mods were required to fit the 120.3 in the roof? I've only seen "skinnier" 360 rads in there as most places list the 120.3 on the non-compatible list. It might sell me on the Cosmos anyway :D

Yup, inspired by his work on the paint job and another one from a UK forum for the alpha cool display and so on. Basically its a combination of different ideas from different projects posted in water-cooling galleries  The theme though I choice for this one is black and red inside not straying away from the original cosmos-s black red combination.

Im still missing red LED's in there, should be done by next week or so.

The red and yellow LED's go together very nicely.

Good job on the build. Sorry 'bout the MB. What a buzzkill.

How are you monitoring your temps? Do you have after market sensors or does the LCD screen read it from the motherboard? If you have after market sensors, I'm curious as to how you mount them on the CPU.

Sorry for not updating lately, been very busy with work.

New parts/OS installed:

Auzen Prelude 7.1 soundcard (i love this card, best XFi available)
Additional 2GB DDR3 Crucial Kit (1GBx2): total now is 4GB
Windows Vista 64bit

At the moment im still missing some red leds inside the case and I had the cover on the raptor x redesigned so currently its missing a cover. Aside from those, I believe my Toaster project is done, I have been playing COD4, CoH, Crysis, etc. on highest settings (except for Crysis of course) and never had any slowdowns nor problems at 3.8Ghz. I am very happy with my Toaster

I almost hit 20k on 3DMark06 with this baby ;) LINK (http://homepage.mac.com/npasamonte/OC/benchmark.JPG)

Anyway here are some new pics I took a while ago. Don't miss the youtube link below if you want to see the scanner light in action.

I would like to know this as well. Also, what software are you using to run the LCD, or did it come with its own?

Not really sure with the tips, all i can say is have plenty of patience with the sleeving process and have some ice ready to put your fingers in after :D I used those tools that remove those pins in the molex so it was kinda easier to sleeve them one by one.

at the moment I have 2 of these (http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=23169) wired in series and used double sided tape to stick em on the left and top portion of the inner case circled on the pic below. The rest were lighted with the help of the bright red leds placed in the XSPC tops. Its not enough for now, I am having more leds made and hopefully will be done by next week.

Yup its an AlphaCool LCD display, it comes with a software that you use to create custom designs for it and its very easy to use. In my case, I customized the display to put in all basic info I need, very easy to monitor my system while I benchmark or play games. Love it!

Thanks guys for the compliment, XS has helped me a lot to guide me setup my first watercooling rig. It was difficult and had sore fingers in the end, but all those are worth it after. My rig is very quiet and kick's ass in game graphics

Thanks for the info on the LEDs!

I just want to add that I noticed you used the Sunbeam Molex ATX Extractor to take out the pins off from your PSU connector. I have no idea how you did it. But It was so painful for me to take it out. I practiced on the PCI-Expres 4 pins connector and I was only able to take out 3 of 4 for an extensive period of time. By that time I thought this process wasn't wort it. I heard the AC Ryan was much of a better tool. I may have to get that later or the one off Petras they look they similiar (can any one confirm?).

Anyhow seen you did it to all 24 pins makes me wondering what I'm doing wrong? How fast could you take one out? I don't feel like buying a new tool if I'm using the one I have that does the same thing, but I"m just using it wrong :shakes:. Anyways thanks!

Well it really does hurt and had sore fingers for a few days after trying it out. That is why I mentioned before that your patience will be tested in this case. Getting the right tools is important as well, the sunbeam tool I had worked for me. It took me the whole week before I was able to remove and finish sleeving the 24-pin cables. What I did is just try one pin at a time, if I can't pull it off then I stop and try it again later. You can even see from the first batch of pictures that I had to wear a glove in the end because of my sore fingers but I still had to continue, hehe. Good Luck mate :)

Gunther: AWESOME ON THE INSIDE!!!! Pure MDPC. But the outside is not my taste - I talk about the front - having it clean like Junkun would make it soooo beautiful (for my taste). If you ever go for it - you have found a home :) Taste is always different with everyone, so congratulations for you build - no matter what!

Dualbrain: Thanks for the compliment mate, Toaster is indeed missing something, which is a front cover for the Raptor X. Hopefully it'll be done by next week including more leds to be installed inside and light up the reservoir. That is why I haven't took some really good hi-res profile pics of it yet, Im saving them once the remaining mods are installed ;)

Finally the raptor cover is now installed, with the led lining effect fixed (I accidentally severed the wiring a few weeks ago).I believe that is the last part that needs to be installed to finish my Toaster rig. I still have to finish some leds though for the inside but i gues those are just minor add-ons.

Here are some crude pics of my Toasted rig finally finished, better pictures will be done this weekend (hopefully) to showcase my Toaster.

Thanks eXa, the whining noise was somehow minimized after placing the cover now, still overall the noisiest part on my Toaster rig is indeed the Raptor X especially when its seeking data on the disk. I barely notice the sound though once I'm playing, so I'm not that concerned about it :)
