They started selling the first units at the end of april.
There should be someone xtreme enough to have one and post some pics and benches :)

I have been on a waiting list for these, no email from them about shipping last April has come yet.

Are you sure those units are for Windows/Vista ?

hmm...I don't know guys; I've watched their video a few months ago, and...ok it's just a feeling, just the way they talk...I don't trust those guys

It looked very promising

But according to their website: Only works for linux, and not bootable.

Although they expect a bootable, windows compatible one in Q3...

hahaha now they say Q3? They told me Q2 at the very start of this year. Not that I can afford one anymore now that I've bought my car :(:(:(

Well you shouldn't have opted for that fully loaded CL65 of yours then, right?:D

Yup it seems expensive till you step back and factor in the cost of a really good Adaptec (or equivalent) controller card and 5+ SAS drives, and you only get a fraction of the speed from those still.

How do the IO drives handle redundancy? Not something I'm worried about for home use, I'm just curious. They seem to be targeting work environments first, can 2 be used in a sort of raid 1?

Which was the pricing? I think on the sort of 2000$ for the 160 gig version?

you can raid ~4x ~640GB iodrives via os @ 3200MB/s 0.1ms

they should also do ssd/hdd form drives.. then you can raid 0 1 etc..

3200 MB/s

Problem with these is they require a PCI slot of some sort ? So you are limited by your motherboard, how many grapgic cards you want to run, or anything else.

I am finding with my SSD's that even being capped in bandwidth that it is so fast that even going over 1 GB/s would not really be noticed.

Now building a Raid like that with these for a server is a different matter.

x4 PCIe slot for each. Yes some server motherboards have 4 x PCIe with multipurpose expansion slots that can fit adapters for several more PCIe slots

If you look at the reviews, you won't notice any improvement in most applications for more than 2 SSD in RAID-0. The "snappiness" primarily comes from the low access times. That is why DRAM based SSD's seem even faster for most applications (access times 0.001ms vs 0.1ms). You will only notice a gain in those applications that are bound by throughput or copying/transferring big files.

I think what Napalm was referring to was software RAID through the disk manager or "dynamic disks" in Windows. From what I remember, linux scales nicely with low CPU utilization. Windows sucks with high CPU usage and poor scaling.

30$ per GB means about:
80gb model: 2400$
160gb model: 4800$

Hmm, not sure the latter is in my budget, but with dollar so low maybe...

alfaunits

That was exactly my thought - since it was announced 'till now the USD dropped sooo much that the price in EURO went down almost 500 EUR for the 80GB version :D

RealTelstar
05-19-2008, 02:32 PM
Well those prices i posted are official, until end of Q3 :(
I got today a reply to my inquiries from Rich Vaules. I asked him to think about a 120gb version :D

If speeds are really 3200MB/s with latency of 0.1ms you basically have drive that acts very close to RAM (just with higher latency). Home usage is still not logical (unless you have too much cash), but for companies where speed is a serious demand, such stuff might be interesting regardless of price.

alfaunits
05-20-2008, 02:42 AM
With those speeds, your RAM and CPU will have a hard time following through ;) The latency is still waaay higher than RAM/CPU cache though, so you can't exactly swap RAM for it.

No matter what, I won't spend $1000 for a storage with very limited space. Even by next year I won't be thinking this iodrive card.

In response to my e-mail to them a couple days ago:

Hello Ned:

The Fusion io drive is in production on the Linux version and we are signing customers up as beta customers for the Windows version.

The drives are available currently in 80Gb & 160Gb and 320GB and available at $30per GB or $2,400, $4,800 and $9,600 each. Delivery times are 6 - 8 Weeks or sooner.

The proceedure for obtaining cards for either Lunux or Windows is to order
them. We do not have or send out evaluation units but rather fully functioning production units. We accept purchase orders or Credit Cards.

If you are interested, please write me back with your Shipping and Billing
information as well as which capacity io drive you would like ie: 80GB, 160Gb or 320GB and the quantity. I will then send you a quotation from which you can either issue a Purchase Order or write me back with Credit Card information. Because of the lead time involved, most companies are
buying as many as 3 cards to properly test them. You can mix and match capacities if you would like. If for some reason you are dissatisfied, we
will take back the cards within 30 days for a full refund. We have had none returned to date.

Thank you again for your interest in the Fusion-io drive !

Sincerely,

Jeff Harmon

I'm not ordering before the windows drivers are ready, though.
