ok I have a 250gb WD HDD that cmos is reporting has a bad smart. my question is the drive dead or can I repair it at all? What does everyone think. I will try stuff if you have ideas that I have not tried yet. :)

If the smart data on the drive is reporting it as bad then really it's best to just get a new drive or send it out for repair. The other options really are not cost effective (replacing the controller on the HD which requires you to have similar hd's/controllers to swap with) and replacing platters are generally not an option.

Yeah, just backup everything, today and buy a bigger one tomorow.
RMA this one, and use it as a small backup drive.

I figured it was dead but I thought maybe some of you may know a way to keep it running. It is just a cruncher drive but still most of the ones I still have are old 20gb so a 250gb is hard to pitch if there is a way to keep it working for a while longer. :)
