Im just wondering, what memory is better in terms of performance. eg hard-core gaming and video editing etc.

2GB DDR3 1600 Mhz (cas 7)

or

4GB DD2 800MHz (cas 4)

Thanks for helping:up:

I'd go with the ddr2 now as its cheaper and I've seen ddr3 perform the same or worse in current games. You'll want the max memory you can get if you're doing video editing. Plus once ddr3 gets a little cheaper you can upgrade to a larger amount in the future

thnks for the feedback, however i currently have 2 Gb of ddr2 in dual channel mode, so if i purchase 2 more 1gb sticks, it wont be in dual channel mode. So am i better off having 4X1 Gb DDR2 800 or 2X1 DDR3 1600, price isnt really an issue for me since i can get a DDR3 1600Mhz 2GB kit for £100. OR should i sell my current memory and buy 2X2 DDR2, lol. I bet thats a mouthfull :)

I would sell you current memory and get 2x2GB, its better for overclocking. DDR3 hasn't shown itself to worth price just yet (it will).

Dual channel refers to the DIMM (slots for RAM) slots. I'm assuming you have 4 DIMM slots. Slots 1,3 will dual and slots 2,4 will dual channel as long as you have the exact same type of memory, speed and timings.

For example if have 8GB (4x2GB like I will have tomorrow) Mushkin XP PC2-8500 1066MHz they will all be dual channeling. I got my info from the DFI 790FX M2R manual. http://us.dfi.com.tw/Support/Download/manual_download_us.jsp?PRODUCT_ID=5717&CATEGORY_TYPE=LP%20UT&SITE=US (http://us.dfi.com.tw/Support/Download/manual_download_us.jsp?PRODUCT_ID=5717&CATEGORY_TYPE=LP%20UT&SITE=US). I would refer to your board's manual for definitve info.

I hope this helps.

i have 2 GB DDR3 1600 and my system absolutely screams when i edit and compile video. i still think the slight speed boost the big memory divider gives isn't quite worth the money yet.

The DDR3 vs. DDR2 is mainly one fo price performance. I'm only a salaryman after all. I didn't feel DDR3 is worth it this early. But i'm glad your box flies.

I run a lot of virtual machines for work which is why I got 8 GB coming, that and my boss paid for it:D

Edit: I'm not endorsing the 1066 divider I was just giving an example based on what I will be using.

Hi, I wonder which DDR2 is better one is G.Skill 4gb pc2 8000 and the other one is mushkin 4gb pc2 8000-redline?
Is it worth the money if I get PC2 8500?

What kind of volts are you going to throwing at your RAM. Redline's designed for something 3.3vdimm if I'm not mistaken, which is good for extreme overclocking. I've not heard complaints about baby blue (gskill) but I've never used them personally so I can't comment on them.

PC2 8500 will show very little difference in actual performance, if any at all. If price is a real concern PC2 6400 (that's DDR2 800 Mhz) will suit you fine.

Edit: I think what you have in your sig is mostly fine unless your looking for that extra few mhz OC. I always stress to do your due research and ask second opinions

well the G.Skill that I am using @2.1v I am planning to buy new motherboard but so debate on Asus Rampage or P5e3 Premium or the coming P5e64 Evo. I don't really know which worth the money but two of them is require DDR3 and one DDR2, but seem like you all saying DDR3 doesn't worth the money so that's y since I am buying new board and I am thinking to upgrade from DDR2 1000 to 1066 but if there no big different I guess I will just stick to what I have and spend the money on a better CG when it comes out.

yeah, your money would be better spent on a video card.

Sound logic, in my opinion. DDR3 is great stuff don't get me wrong, I just feel the price of entry is too steep at the moment and DDR2 is dirt cheap compared to how much it used to cost. That upgrade gfx card should show you much more instant improvement than the DDR3.
