Ok heres the plan. Figured out its my 1.6a holding me back along with my memory.

Ram tops out at 173 3:4 (230mhz) min timings and enhance dram, 195 - 200 max timings. CPU is capable of 184mhz stable. Seeing as its unlikely ill find noticeably better memory then its time to swap the cpu. Im now faced with a dilemma. I want a cpu thatll max out at either 173mhz or 195mhz (preferably slightly higher to allow for variance between cpus).

2.26b : 2941mhz @ 173mhz - should be easily attained with room to spare.
2.4b : 3114mhz @ 173mhz - pushing it a bit? Not sure.
2.53b : 3287mhz @ 173mhz - see above.
2.26b : 3315mhz @ 195mhz - not a chance in hell.
2.4b : 3510mhz @ 195mhz - see above.
2.53b : 3705mhz @ 195mhz - heh - as if ;).

Now, price is not an issue up to a point, but if I went for a 2.53b id like to be 99% certain of hitting target. Its a hell of a lot of money to waste. My questions are as follows.

Water cooled P4. Do I go for the safe option of a 2.26b, or take my chances on wasting £200 to £400 on either a 2.4 or 2.53?

Opinions on whether the 2.4 or 2.53 would reach the targets I have set plz. Bear in mind that this will be watercooled (swiftech quiet power style) and not my current air setup. Ive figured the swiftech is capable of handling 3350mhz @ 1.8v without clock throttling kicking in. In theory temps should be 53c, but allowing for efficiency falling off then I reckon about 57c. This is based on room temp of 20c.

Another point worth making is that this is purely for 3dmark runs. It wont be running flat out like that all the time. I just dont need it in rl apps.

Id like to hear from owners of all the above mentioned chips to hear their opinions on how attainable the overclocks id need are. Im 100% sure the 2.26b would do, but to gain the 3dmark points I want then Id have to be looking at at least the 2.4b. Buying a 2.4 or 2.53 would put me out of the upgrade loop for a good while so I cant settle for a maybe.

And yes ive been here long enough to know theres no definites. I also know enough about clocking to say that x chip will clock to between 3ghz and 3.2ghz in 90% of cases. Thats all im after here.

Incase youre wondering atm im thinking of the 2.4b as I reckon it should reach between 3050 and 3200 mhz.

Thx guys,

PiLsY.

Philsy,

I can tell you that at 195 Maxed timings you'll get better 3D scores then with mem at 230 somthing minimal timings. This is at the same CPU Mhz also by the way.

Yeah I thought as much m8. Problem is im not sure I could find a cpu capable of that without resorting to phase change/chilled water etc.

Decided to pick up the quiet power as ive got a fair bit of stuff I could add to it (radiators, more powerful pump, pair of 190cfm 120mm EHE deltas ;) etc.), and I quite fancy the lite-on case.

What would you suggest cpu wise seeing as im limited to straight water? My mem is capable of 193mhz maxed timings in an AMD system, so I reckon that 195 will be well within reach on the IT7, possibly even 200. Bloody intel and their locked multis . This is the reason im shooting for 173 FSB really, I just cant see me being able to hit 195ish without some really good sub zero cooling. At this point in time I just cant stretch that far.

At what point would you suggest that id get better 3dmark performance in mhz comparing 230 minimal to xxx maximum? My guess would be at around 188mhz.

I would give the 2.26b a go, its cheap enough and good for very high fsb's.To give yourself a better chance of hitting the fsb's you need why not move to phase change cooling. It unlocked 160 to 180fsb with my 1.6a which isn't a super clocker.

Either way m8 I wish you luck.

The problem with the prometia is I hate the case :(. It looks so cheap and tacky.

How much was your prometia with s478 kit shipped m8?

And as a by the by...

This 1.6 of mine is being sold on with my p4s333 running at 2.4ghz. If you like i'll swap it with yours as long as its 2.4 capable on retail air cooling. No skin off my nose so to speak ;).

With the volcano 7+ on medium this 1.6a is happy at 2.7ghz / 1.67v. Idle temp around 43c in this heat (25c in my room atm ;(). Fire me a mail across if you fancy it m8. Wont be for a week or 2 tho - need this months wages first ;).

I think with the QP a 2.4b doing 173 would be easy money. 3114 should be about right. As far as 188, I would say thats about right, it would be my guess too:D

Decision made...

2.26b and a prometia. Gonna gun for that 3315mhz I reckon.

Can always hang some roadkill over the case to make it look more appealing :stick:.

2.26b is the better price vs. performance. You will max out your 2.26b at the same speed you'll max out a 2.4 or 2.53 northwood.

Thanks for the offer, this 1.6a hits 2.4 ar 1.55v and will do 167fsb at 1.7v the same as yours.I was looking for 200fsb but it falls short and as such for me it is not a good clocker.Im just about to pick up an IT7 and I may get a 2.26b to go with it.If I could get this winbond to 240fsb it would may one awesomely fast system, leaving me to only save for the new Radeon in a couple of months.

Hmmm.

Is chip-con run by schoolkids or something?

Hi' Matt,

normally it shouold not take more than a week, however due to the summer hollidays production is behind, so you may expect up to 3 week delivery time, sorry.

Kind regards

Chip-con ApS

Doesnt inspire confidence and also means that I'll be without a case for a fair while ;(.

Quote confirmed price at £475 shipped to my door with s478 kit. Definitely not as cheap as I first thought.

looks like a good setup. With a bit of luck you might hit 3200, so that's a 188 on the memory. That should really give you a nice score.
Mine can run 3060 max but at high voltage, this with WC. With a prometeia, yours should definitely go much higher.
Good luck with your new toy :)
