Ok heres the plan. Figured out its my 1.6a holding me back along with my memory.
Ram tops out at 173 3:4 (230mhz) min timings and enhance dram, 195 - 200 max timings. CPU is capable of 184mhz stable. Seeing as its unlikely ill find noticeably better memory then its time to swap the cpu. Im now faced with a dilemma. I want a cpu thatll max out at either 173mhz or 195mhz (preferably slightly higher to allow for variance between cpus).
2.26b : 2941mhz @ 173mhz - should be easily attained with room to spare.
2.4b : 3114mhz @ 173mhz - pushing it a bit? Not sure.
2.53b : 3287mhz @ 173mhz - see above.
2.26b : 3315mhz @ 195mhz - not a chance in hell.
2.4b : 3510mhz @ 195mhz - see above.
2.53b : 3705mhz @ 195mhz - heh - as if ;).
Now, price is not an issue up to a point, but if I went for a 2.53b id like to be 99% certain of hitting target. Its a hell of a lot of money to waste. My questions are as follows.
Water cooled P4. Do I go for the safe option of a 2.26b, or take my chances on wasting £200 to £400 on either a 2.4 or 2.53?
Opinions on whether the 2.4 or 2.53 would reach the targets I have set plz. Bear in mind that this will be watercooled (swiftech quiet power style) and not my current air setup. Ive figured the swiftech is capable of handling 3350mhz @ 1.8v without clock throttling kicking in. In theory temps should be 53c, but allowing for efficiency falling off then I reckon about 57c. This is based on room temp of 20c.
Another point worth making is that this is purely for 3dmark runs. It wont be running flat out like that all the time. I just dont need it in rl apps.
Id like to hear from owners of all the above mentioned chips to hear their opinions on how attainable the overclocks id need are. Im 100% sure the 2.26b would do, but to gain the 3dmark points I want then Id have to be looking at at least the 2.4b. Buying a 2.4 or 2.53 would put me out of the upgrade loop for a good while so I cant settle for a maybe.
And yes ive been here long enough to know theres no definites. I also know enough about clocking to say that x chip will clock to between 3ghz and 3.2ghz in 90% of cases. Thats all im after here.
Incase youre wondering atm im thinking of the 2.4b as I reckon it should reach between 3050 and 3200 mhz.
Thx guys,
