I found a thread like this on another forum and found a bunch of golden oldies to play. What games did you really like that weren't popular at all?

I'll start it off with,

Dracula: Reign of Terror (a.k.a. Vlad Tepes Dracula)
& Castle of the winds (although that might have been popular idk)

Haha, I remember playing a shareware version of 'Castle of the Winds'. I'm tempted to go find a full copy now :)

I'll have to say 'Master of Magic' is probably my favorite game from the days of old(at least compared to my age), although I guess it's not quite at the level of being unpopular. Transport Tycoon Deluxe is another favorite I can always go back to and play for a good round of fun.

I see 'Outpost 2' was mentioned; I never got to play it, but as odd as it sounds I enjoyed the original with its unfinished features and buginess. I distinctly remember getting patches for the game in the mail and the large difference in gameplay they made.

Asheron's Call 2 is the first game that comes to mind for me. At the time I had been playing Everquest for maybe three years so the game seemed a lot more fun in terms of an MMO. The combat was intuitive and you could chain moves for bonuses. I remember playing a lizard guy that used a drum to cast spells and it was definitely more fun than EQ maybe even better than WoW in terms of combat. Alas, they shut down the servers because the game didn't do very well.

One of the best and most original games: Recoil

http://uk.pc.ign.com/articles/153/153717p1.html

You drive a tank through a wide range of missions, but it was a futuristic tank, which you could pull of some amazing power slides with.
It sounds rather.. Meh, but you had to strategically destory the enemy, otherwise the alarms would sound and you'd be swamped.
Honestly was one of the greatest games i've played.
I'd be really suprsied if anyones ever played it though, as it wasn't very 'Big' or 'Known'.

EA is what happened to Bullfrog. 2 of the Bullfrog guys were actually working on a Dungeon Keeper 3 and making good progress, but then they got told to shelve the game and help out with some Harry Potter game. So there was in fact a DK3 in the making. :/

this is what war3 should have been, hero based rts(was out before war as well so boo blizzard's "new idea") where your hero was truly the leader of the army. lots of spells and abilities, nice item sets, oh and did i mention with leveling your hero could go out wreck enemies by himself

From reading other peoples suggestions because I cant think of which ones I've missed:

Avernum (I was hooked to Exile in the 90's)
Starcraft
Warlords battlecry (I LOVED warlords 3, warlords 5 is in production right now)
Fable (I bought it on the day of launch and it had an installation bug so I had to return it )

And, erm, Zelda lol. I never had a Nintendo.

Freelancer was the best ever Space and Microsoft game I have ever played, I wish they could make it an MMO.

Alien vs Predator 1 had nice atmosphere :)
......multi : Warsow is interesting, freeware, "highskilled shooter"
RTS The whole C&C series, up to Tiberian Sun. Red alert 1 was the best of the bunch for me
RPG Diablo2 duh :D. .Someone mentioned 2moons, I play it every now and then, _huge_ grind

Kingpin: Life of Crime and Shogo: Mobile Armor Division.

Hell yeah!!

here are others:

Bounty Hunter - (the older one, fly around a city, blade runner-esc, do different mission, chase/kill criminals, deliver stuff, it got a whole flying city - with cops, trains, air traffic, etc, really amazing)

B.R.E.E.D. (you can get into a plane and fly out into SPACE!!)

Interstate 82 = GTA 'clone' (before GTA3) + twisted metal + dukes of hazard

Witchaven = an gothic-era style FPS with bows and axxes and swords and zombies in castles

Barbarian (aka death blade ?) - a unique sword fighting game where you can chop heads off for an instakill

KINGPIN needs to be remade, that game was amazing, a brutal FPS with very good rpg-elements.

THIEF -first person sneaker, splinter cell in steampunk 1600s

Console:
Battle Arena Toshiden (soul calibur-esc)
Bushido Blade (the only game that can compare to barbarian, no life bars, no powerups, the most realistic sword fighting game ever made)
Intelligence Qube (the best puzzle game ever (after tetris)

Good calls on Rollcage, Sacred.

Playing Shadowgrounds: Survivor at the moment (4.99 on steam until end of the 12th!). Really addictive and well worth the small price. I rather like supporting indy devs as well :D

Other games that are great that nobody ever played...

Arcanum didn't seem popular. That was a fun game. Tribes 2 for definite, and the original, 1. I was a consummate veteran of both and played it competitively for years. The teamwork involved and the skill required to be great are of the highest required I have ever seen in a mp fps. Not a single game since has come close to requiring the level of coordination that Tribes demanded when playing in competitive clan matches. The player pool was so limited because of the tremendous learning curve that around 80% of the community was made up of guys who could play damn well and pull off amazing stuff.

The game never really took off because of 1. not enough publicity 2. some bug difficulties with the second and 3. the insane learning curve. Most people were BF or CS players and couldn't grasp the up-down movement of the game due to the jetpacks... the skiing. The fact that every weapon was projectile and therefore leading accurately while moving at insane speeds (in T1 you're talking upwards of 300 KPH on flag runs)... it was all rather special.

Particle

Tribes was very popular back in the day. It still has quite a few players on it at all times. I've been running an RPG server for it since 2001. Tribes 2 was a load of fun too, but when they killed off the in-game forum the community started to disintegrate.

I play T2 every single day still, with small communities from US, AUS on classic and V2 servers... and I'm from Hong Kong. The 200 ping sucks, but the game is well worth it.

Back in the day Tribes had some players, but it never came close to eclipsing the Quakes / UT's / CS games in terms of sheer popularity.

Descent: Freespace series
Summoner

Played Fahrenheit for the PC and I got pretty far in the game, woulda kept playing if I didn't have to reformat my computer a while back... Descent, played it on the days of Voodoo cards and it was one of the best space sim I played, very good multiplayer and played it a lot in middle school lol... Descent Freespace kicked ass... game engine was solid for its time, voice/cinematics were nice, and they had a good online multiplayer network too bad there was not a lot of people who were interested in it. A good rpg game I played also by Volition INC was Summoner, I enjoyed it for the PC and they later on released 2 but never landed for the PC though it was one of those games I enjoyed finishing :P.

Ascendancy,

This was a DOS game that I spent many months playing. I loved it, the ideas were great and the graphics were super advanced for the weak systems back in the day. I only hope that Logic Factory makes a sequel.

Awesome game! I learned a lot from that game, and from Age of the Empires for that matter too. Video games are really a good learning method.

Castle of the Winds is quite possibly the funnest game in the world. First game I ever played and I still play it sometimes!

MEGARACE-Nice video segments and stuff, it came with my first PC. A packard bell from 1994. Was really hard at high difficulty, or maybe i was really young, one of the 2.

Rise of the Triad

Rise of the Triad was perhaps the most over the top ridiculous, gory game that came out of the Doom craze of the early 90's. I never even played a full version, only shareware, and it was so fun. And there was a 'more blood' code on top the organs and blood everywhere.

I wouldnt say nobody has played it, but the HL1 mod "The Specialists" was very fun, so was Firearms. I played hours of killing bots in all the HL1 mod games. Learned how to install and tweak them, mod server. Speaking of DOS games, I'm still looking for Airborne Ranger. That was great back then. Played the 1st 2 Police Quests, and a little Leisure Suit Larry back then, as well.

Dont know if it is very uncomon or not, But i love Fallout2.
Ive just started to play it again, now with the Restoration Project v1.2 expansion.

Weirdly enough i found myself playing SimFarm alot back in the day...

I think many of the newer games lack depth because not all know the lineage of the games.

Just knowing Zork I,II,II/Bard's Tale games started out as stories with multiple ending with your input, to more sophisticated games like Questron/Darklands that spawned a whole new 3D way of telling the same story but as you instanly move threw it...!

Now we have Spore, WoW Battlefield, etc. Coming as direct ascendants of the earlier games I mentioned.

My vote:

Drakkhen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drakkhen)

Comming from that frame of mind into the 90's and finding UltimaOnline/Everquest.. you learned quickly about a computer's needs and the hardware it takes to drive the games.

A couple i can think of off the top of my head:

Planescape: Torment
Interstate 76'
Dues Ex (the first and only one as far as I am concerned)
Sven Co-op Mod for Half-Life (loads of fun back when)
Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines
Beyond Good and Evil
Grim Fandango
Elderscrolls 3 (which I liked better than number 4, and would like to go back and try playing daggerfall)
Full Throttle (old LucasArts point and click adventure)
Avernum/Geneforge series from Spiderweb Software. I've only played a bit into those games but they are fantastic in their own rights.

Oh and almost forgot, the Little Big Adventure series or Twinsen's Odyssey.

Ah, Interstate 76! I think there would have ever been GTA series (or Driver series) without Interstate 76'.

Has any one mentioned Grim Fandango or Thief series:) . For just plain fun you can't beat the original Serious Sam:p:

The thief series was pretty awesome...a great stealth game. Much better than most.

My favorite unpopular game of all time is still trespasser. That game was AMAZING. No hud, amazing physics and graphics for the time, an open ended feel, and a good 'ole arm to handle things....rather than using a gravity gun or having them float through the air. It probably still is one of the most realistic feeling games of all time. You get thrown on an island and react with things almost exactly like you would in real life to get the job done.

Castle of the winds was amazing! I actually recently played through them all again. Of particular interest I found was that the levels were random so you got a different game each time you played.

I'll also add ADOM to the list! Prefered it to NetHack but same sort of game.

Warboy;2980806']I say "Earth & Beyond (http://www.earthandbeyond.ca)" I wish EA never canceled it.

i agree with you 100% on that. some guys are working to get an emulator running. only wish ea would just release the source code and let people privatly host it.

also more to the list
Elderscrolls daggerfall - actually found this and can run it in dosbox
Ultima Stygian abyss - spent weeks in this game way back when
Ultima Labrynth of worlds - same with this one.
sven-coop for hl1 mod was def fun.
masters of orion 2
simcopter
betrayal at krondor - looooved this game
betrayal at antara ( unofficial sequal) loved this game still have it in case
Mechwarrior
Commander keen
Solarwinds
freelancer - just actually resinatlled it and gave it another play through for old times sake ( reminiscing on how great E&B was) apparently there was a sequel in the works for 360 then got :banana::banana::banana:canned *from what ive read*

As above ...

Ultima Underworld I and II along with System Shock, all made by the talented guys from Looking Glass, these games make modern games seem silly in comparison, sure we have brilliant graphics nowadays, but what a joy it would be if these 3 classics could be re-released with modern graphics, the depth of gameplay, storyline ETC is heads and shoulders above anything released since (with the possible exception of Dues Ex) ... I was not even into RPG when these were released but soon got sucked into it, Looking Glass also gave us the Brilliant Thief games that i still play to this day on a suitable older machine.

Going back further, I loved Dungeon Keeper on my old Amiga 500 :)

Forgot to add ... loved the old LucasArt point and click adventures, Monkey Island I and II, Indiana Jones and fate of Atlantis and the one about the Biker (Full Throttle?) would keep up me up into the wee small hours without noticing the time.

Another fun HL1 mod was Science and Industry. It was totally ingenious and good TFC like gameplay, but was very under-played.

There is a new version of it just out for HL2: http://www.simod.com/
