I have photomatix which only gives your HDR.
I have bibble which lets you get different exposures from the .RAW image.
I have a nikon which shoots in .NEF.
How do you convert the .NEF to .RAW so bibble can edit the pic?
Bibble will work with a bunch of other camera's file format, canon per say. But not Nikon.

.NEF is Nikon's RAW format.

Normally what you do is use bracketing to take 3 pictures. One underexposed, one normal and one overexposed. I use -1 and +1 EV.

If using .NEF you will have to save them as JPEGS before combining them in Photomatix. Annoying, but the only way to do it.

The problem is I don't have a tripod right now. Bibble can't use .NEF, it has to be converted to .RAW to be able to adjust the exposures. With .RAW you can make 3 different exposures for a HDR shot using one shot.

I have done HDR without a tripod - find something to brace the camera against. A rock, fence, the ground, etc.

You can make 3 exposures from 1 shot, but keep in mind the end result isn't the same as actually taking 3 differently exposed pictures.

Maybe I'll try taking some pics in my back yard with the camera on the table.
Do you have a D40?
If so do I set it to shutter priority and use the wheel to change it easily?
Or am I going to have to change the ISO?

I use Braketing auto if i have no tripod or other ways.

But then again, am using a 40D so i have fast FPS

Go like 2 or 3 stops up and down.

Since the D40 can't do bracketing, you'll need to use the EV at +1 and -1 (or more, but I find 1 is enough) for your over and under pictures.

The only drawback is like you said, camera shake and the software will have to line up the shots. If you have clouds, grass, or tree branches that moved it can mess things up. You'll have to experiment to find which method works better.

I actually haven't tried doing the single raw file method. I think I'd have to open it up in Photoshop and adjust the exposure and save the seperate files. This would give a perfectly aligned picture...I'll have to see how that turns out.

I can't get any to come out worth a crap.
I don't know if it is something I'm doing wrong, or if it is bad pics going in.
I haven't had a chance to take any pics in decent lighting.
