I was thinking of buying a DSLR but I notice that some people were offering used ones for nice prices like the D80 and Rebel XTI. Is there much cons to this that would require me to just buy it used?

Be careful buying used.

Grey Market cameras, drops, and the such can be relatively common.

At this point the price on DSLR's has dropped to the point where a fairly decent one doesn't run much more than $500

Well I'm just looking at craigslist for now however someone has a brand new Rebel XTI with the lens kit for $580. If i buy off craigslist, is the 1 year warranty still honored?

Before considering buying a dslr make sure you go to a brick and morter store and hold the ones your interested in and make sure you enjoy using it. Take a few shots.

I know of several people that hate the ergonomics on the Rebels and kind of regret not trying them out beforehand.

^Already have and I like both. Quality from reviews are relatively the same so it goes back to lens...........

I'd go with the D80 over the XTi. Dont know anyone who would say the XTi is a superior camera.

It isn't, it's inferior to the D80. However look at the price points - one is clearly positioned above the other. Unlike a lot of tech companies though, they have spaced their products apart. Very rarely will you see Canon and Nikon go head to head with cameras. They would rather stagger them, and I can understand why. To get a better camera than the $700 Nikon D80 you need to step up to the $1,100 Canon 40D. After that, it's the $1800 Nikon D300.
