I upgraded my sister's PC with WinXP(from 98) and she is happy with the speed. Now she gets these anoying pop-up message at random, trying to sell their pop-up blockers. I installed adshield and that got rid of most explorer pop-up windows but she still gets pop up windows when she is not exploring. Isn't their a way to block these?

I also have a question about windows update. The microsoft website says that she should install 40 critical updates, should we be doing those also?

Thanks for any advice or recommendations.

Installing SP1 for WinXP should install most of these hot fixes, then just install what ever else it says. But, yes, I would keep up to date, WinXP has heaps of security flaws that are always being patched

as said service pack 1 will install most fixes ... as regards rest of updates i always install critical ones .. rest is user preferance ... as regard the popups the the built in firewall in xp should stop most of the messages provided its enabled
