I don't know what ghey music you listen to but it's not as good as Slayer.

Sometimes people say music sounds all the same, but when your music is as good as this who cares

Metallica? Lick my hairy greabo assole ... rubbish!

If it wasn't for Motorhead they'd be the best ever!

Who's your favourite metal band?

Judas Priest!

Are they metal or are they heavy rock?

Maybe the definition is you had to have a sawn off denim Wrangler jacket with the name sewn across the top in the same style as the band logo?

So it would have to be AC/DC or Iron Maiden with a picture of Eddy if your mum could do it well enough :D

Depends what the definition of "best" is. Everybody will have an opinion on their own favorite, but on a scale of mass familiarity and respectability, I'd have to say Iron Maiden.

its METAL, nor hard/stadium rock.

Andy killed it with the first post, even if its the thrash side of metal...

Slayer.

End of.

maybe Machine Head should be fairly well up there, as should Sepultura (The Max years)?

Fear Factory (The Dino years?) Terminator Metal- whoever called it that hit the nail squarely on the head :D

Nowadays, I'd have to say Suicide Silence, Bring Me the Horizon, or Through the Eyes of the Dead.

Years and years ago, it's probably Slayer. Just because they have had a huge impact on metal.

Best HARD CORE band EVER was Vision of Disorder. Listen to Element or Through my eyes as well as a few other of thier tunes.

Too bad they broke up after 2 albums.

I'm old-school, AC/DC, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Dio, Black Sabbath...you get the point. I like alot of the newer groups also, but I always go back too my roots.

I'm going to vote that all pure/death Metal bands suck because they are limiting their musical talent.

For example Slayer just sounds like a lot of screaming to me. This pisses me off to no end.

Metallica only made a handful of "good" songs in my opinion... not sure I would classify any of them as pure metal although there are metal infulences..

Black Label Society is very heavy/metal.. I like all of their music ;)

Technically I end up listening to this when I get a chance though, i'm sick of the horrible radio stations repeating the same songs over and over and over and over again :(

To broad of a question.

Metal has to many sub categories to pick one.

My favorite metal bands would be the following:

AC/DC, Metallica, Megadeth, Children of Bodom, DIO, Amon Amarth, and In Flames.

The best rock band that ever broke up that made many other rock bands was of course

Deep Purple

which split up to make Rainbow, Whitesnake and the Ian Gillan band and then reformed again to make

Deep Purple

with their Perfect Strangers album and appear at Knebworth. That was a great concert

There's some class vocalists, guitarists, drummers and organists amongst those line ups. Oh yes.

Jimi Hendrix and Guns 'n' Roses are not heavy metal. Jimi Hendrix was considered "acid rock" and GnR is simply rock.

Iron Maiden is the all time greatest heavy metal band, hands down. As stated, there are too many sub categories to name a particular as best. But if you dig down to the root of heavy metal, then Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and Judas Priest should be on your list.

Whole bunch of bands I like but can't really say which one is the best, because when it comes to naming one in such a wide genre like metal (-core, power, death, black, drone, funeral, doom...) it's subjective.

God of War is pretty dang good too if you're into Viking Metal.
they are not a screaming death metal though, the lead singer is the very high pitched 80's metal sounding voice. and they do alot of background intrumental stuff too.
each CD is sort of a story as the intro, interludes, and songs all sort of lead you thru a story.

Considering I've already posted my thoughts in this thread, this is probably just spam. But I'm drunk. So F!ck the police! Bodom is the best. I like many of the other bands, Metallica (although they should thank Mustaine) Megadeth, Ozzy/Sabbath, Deep Purple, etc etc etc. Bodom rules. Alexi, Roope, Jaska, Henka, Janne.......as a musician myself, I can only give them the utmost respect in regards to what they do. Nuf said man!!! arghh, why do I have to search through so many icons to find my cheers/beer toast these days!!! arghh!!!

mustaine has lost his way in the last 5-7 years, but he in no way sucks

I seen megadeth 4 times thru the years and the man is :banana::banana::banana:ing awesome, his fire and ferocity can be felt in the first 2 metallica albums and even in master, metallica sucked after justice anyway.

rust in peace, countdown to extinction, cryptic writing and the world needs a hero are better albums than metallica has put out in since the black album by far.

Probably stems from the fact that he injured his left arm and wrist back in 2002 resulting in significant nerve damage.

Nevertheless, I love all of Megadeth's albums - Rust In Peace being my favorite of them all.

This is such a simple question :)

The godfathers - First of all Jimi for his electric guitar....without that there is no metal....Then...Black Sabbath, Purple, Led Zeppelin, Iron Butterfly, etc
Nice soft metal - Metallica, Judas, Motorhead, Manowar, Maiden, AC/DC
In between - Sepultura, Slayer, Rammstein
Metal - Marduk, Dissection, Emperor, Summoning, Six Feet Under, Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, Pungent Stench..etc

Prong is very good. I like the second song on the album with snap your fingers snap your neck.
My personal favorite would be Living Sacrifice, with a close second being Demon hunter. Going to see them in concert the end of next month in this really small club. It's going to be hot tight and sweaty, or maybe hot sweet and sticky, I don't know.

Edit: Manowar is awesome too.
