Ive just purchased 2 new 500gb seagate hard drives, model st3500641as.

And upon installing, on both xp and vista, i notice that i get pretty poor results as compared to the similar seagate in the the following Anandtech article

http://www.anandtech.com/storage/showdoc.aspx?i=3030&p=1

here is the hd tach result i get

im running A P5K DELUXE p35 board and am noting running teh sata drivers , its just set to ide mode in bios, and using the os sata drivers.

Would i gain from setting to bios to raid mode and installing the sata drivers from the intel p35 chipset page.

i noticed thats what they were doing in the review, but their only running a single drive like me, wo why would ytou indtall the raid sata drivers?

I don't think that could be all it. For one, they didn't specify they were using AHCI (and I think it's doubtful they were, given Windows doesn't natively install compatibly)... and for another, his scores would have to improve a whopping 50% to match theirs (though if it is possible that AHCI improves speeds 50%, I'd like to know).

I'm personally at a loss to explain why yours would underperform by *that* much comparatively.

Check the sticker/firmware. Did you get AAK drives? They perform, on average, 20mb/s slower than their normal counterparts. It's a real shame that Seagate bungled and released these. Apparently, you can RMA for a non-AAK drive, but really, why did they not stop when they noticed that these drives - which have different hardware than normal ones, AND were made for a special purpose - got out? I don't know. All I know is that I have a 500 AAK ES... very dissapointing :(

well i tried reinstalling with both raid mode achi mode, amd am getting the same results,

but upon defraging i noticed that after each new install i always get this huge clump of unused space

and this is after all new installs, i also tried formating, before the install, at the vista install app, but it appears to only be a quick format,

any ideas?
