View Full Version : Possibly defective Quad2x4096 Dominators

I've started to have some issues, which I believe to be the RAM.

I'm running QUAD2X4096-8500C5DF Dominators on an Asus Maximus Formula. I had previously been running the Rampage bios but am back to the 0907 Maxiums bios for the purposes of testing.

All settings are stock (CPU/Memory). I've dialed in all the appropriate memory timings in the bios and set Vmem to 2.1v - 2.2v

So far I've found MEMTEST fails at anthing over 1006MHz and passes under 1006MHz. I will get random DET DRAM at any speed of memory and have started to get IRQL_LESS_THAN bsod randomly as well.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What is your memory controller voltage set to?

I've tried everything from auto, to about 1.45v, even pushed it to 1.5 but that pushed the heat into uncomfortable territory.

Set the memory voltage and timings manually and test each module individually with www.memtest.org for 3-5 passes each.

I have all the timings dialed in manually, it won't get past DET DRAM if they are set to auto.

I ran memtest with all the sticks for a few passes earlier. Didn't find any errors. I will try again overnight.

Looks like an overnight pass failed on one of the tests with all the memory in the system.

Testing single sticks right now and it looks like the 2nd stick failed within 10 minutes.

This is with a NB voltage of 1.5 right now memory clocked at 1003MHz.

Looks like 3 of the 4 sticks fail within about 10 mins @ 1003MHz :(

Looks like 3 of the 4 sticks fail within about 10 mins @ 1003MHz :(I'm not going to say it can't happen but, it is VERY unlikely you got 3 bad Dominators and especially in the same pack.

Please try this.

Power off and clear CMOS.
Install 1 module.
Reboot, load setup defaults.
Manually set the memory timings to 5,5,5,15, Command Rate2, and 2.2v Vdimm.

Repeat for each module, 3-5 passes each.

Like I said previously. If I clear CMOS it won't post at all (LCD Posters give DET DRAM error). I have to take out all the RAM, clear CMOS, install oldder PC-667 memory, set timings for the Dominators, save the settings, power down, put in the Dominators and then things "work".

The odd thing is that they worked for a couple of months no problem and then slowly started to act flakey. Initially they were in a P5Ne32-sli board, and now the Maximus Formula. I replaced the P5Ne-32 because I thought it might be a defective motherboard.

I'll give each stick another go, however, to satisfy my own curiosity as well :).

Update:

I most certainly have 3 sticks that do not make it through even 1 pass of memtest and 1 stick that can run at it's rated speed no problem.

So what're the odds on that? Maybe I should hit Vegas or something

 Or buy a lottery ticket.

We'll replace them for you and sorry you had the issue.

No worries, it happens. Computer hardware is finickey sometimes and tempermental at others.

Thanks for the help. Should I reference this thread for the RMA?

You should not need to reference this thread. However, it just dawned on me that you need to disable Legacy USB Support in the bios when Memtesting on an ASUS MOBO. This setting can cause false memory errors. You may want to try that before mailing off your memory.

I'm pretty sure it's off, but I'll double check.
