So I bought this motherboard today. I know that it is a lot more than the other 790i boards, but with the stuff that it comes with. I think that justifies the cost of it. It comes with a game, 3dmark06, a sound card, and waterblocks for the chipset.

The ASUS Striker II Extreme 790i Ultra is one slick board I do have to say, and UPS is saying that it will be here on Friday just in time for me to leave on my ten hour drive to the lan event stompfest.(I pray for no DOA:up: ).

Now I'm wondering do you have to water cool the chipset? I have a lan event to go to this weekend, and didn't have the funds/time to order a pump/rad for it. Plus I don't want to tare down my other machine at the moment(My son would be pissed if he couldn't play TMNT while I was gone).

No need to watercool the NorthBridge.

However, I disagree with you about the price.
It's way too pricey, and unfortunately those bogus prices are the results of a semi-monopoly on the LGA775 motherboards market and...blah blah ( I'm going off-topic, stopping now :D ).

I agree that it is super high dollar. Compared to the others in price is what I meant to say:).

I have been saying it for a while now, video cards cost a ton, CPUs cost a ton, and it was only a matter of time for the motherboards to cost a ton.

It's hugely overpriced due to stock availability and price gouging...in 6 weeks it will be $50-80 less. You got screwed.

DaMulta
03-26-2008, 06:57 PM
I don't want to wait 6 weeks.......I want it now:)

When you wait on new stuff and new stuff you never get to play with the cool stuff that is out now.

BenchZowner

Even if you subtract 100$ from its current price, it's still overpriced.
Take a moment and think of a very good motherboard, close to what we'd call ideal ( by we, I mean power users & overclockers )... the most recent one that crosses my mind instantly is the DFI LanParty nF4 SLI-DR...remember its specs, features, quality & price ? ;)

We're paying MORE for LESS.

I want SLi not Crossfire at the moment.

Also these 790i chipsets are looking very nice.

Big D!! What memory did you get for this as I am looking at the board too but still not sure what memory to pair it with -maybe the Crucial DDR3-2000 or the OCZ Platinum DDR3-1600

I went with this for now.

My build was 1900 shipped, so I really didn't have the funds for the good stuff.

Who know maybe I'll get lucky and they will OC like the bomb.

(I'm kind of glad I was blocked with my debit card(the $$ per day limit)and forced me to wait just a little bit longer. I will have the system that I want for now, and that's what matters most.

I want to hold out for Crucial Tracer DDR3.

the phase set you back a bit I presume.

what Palit card are you gonna test? (love to see some 9800GX2 numbers) try to finagle your way into some Crucial DDR3 2000 goodness:yepp:

That 1900 doesn't include the mach II.

I'm going to test 2 8800GT 1GB cards for now.

I thought that the 1gb did not really matter. because the memory can not really be utilized. Don't you need a bigger bus to use all of that memory? I saw some benchmarks that put the 1gb hardly beating a 512mb, and even losing in some cases..

TheGoat Eater

I don't think he got it because of the amount of memory;) ;) ;) ;)

It's more for future proofing. (For those that want a video card to last for a few years)

Also I believe it does start to help with high OCs but it's still just a few FPS.

I've had my PALiT cards up to 800/1900 on stock voltage(on 3Dmark06) which isn't bad at all.

So they've changed the huge packaging for a smaller one finally :p:
The original package was good enough to fit a 8800 Ultra :D ( make them two )

DaMulta please visit the Techno:banana::banana::banana::banana: hospital for rehabilitation of your hardware habit lol I have the same disorder!! I just got the EK cooling kit for the Striker but the Striker Extreme II has certainly grabbed my attention. It is way over priced but hey I saved money by going for Q9450 rather than the Q6950 :P

nVidia chipsets suck now anyways...the smart money is on Intel.

I'd agree with you on this but the 790i Ultra is a good chipset...probably the best Nvidia has made in a good long time.

DDR2 is dirt cheap, and DDR3 is coming down--a good, non-QX Intel quad can be had for $330 (45nm Xeons), and even a good video card (8800GTS 512) will run you about $220. What hasn't come down? 'Enthusiast' motherboards. In fact, they now top out near $400 and don't offer much besides accessories and bling that you can't get in a nice $170 'mainstream' board. Oh, but if you want SLI, you're going to pay through the nose.
