View Full Version : powering TEC's

I've got an Aopen 300W PSU spare. It handles max. 18A, and I want to connect 4pelts of 50W on it (16.6A). I'm wondering: can that PSU juice them or will it rather kill itself due to the high load?

It's an Aopen with adjustable Voltage rails, so if (!) the PSU can handle the 200W of TEC's I'll crank up the Voltage rails. A tiny movement of the potmeter rose my 12V about 0.5volt, so I guess the voltage drop won't be a problem. But I'm afraid I'll rather blow the PSU :/

hard to say... try 3 tecs first and check if its getting hot after some time, if its only warm or even cool and the 12v line is still over 11.5v then it should be able to take another tec.

this psu is not powering your system is it? you shouldnt have any other load on it.

im going to buy a leadman 400W psu on ebay. ive read some reiews where they compared it with the enermax 330W psu wich is a very good psu, and the enermax was only very little better than the leadman.

28A on 3,3V
30A on 5V
25A on 12V

i know its overrated but ti will be enough to run my 6 30W tecs on the 5v line and 2 80W tecs on the 12v line i guess and it only costs 19€ :)

no, offcourse it won't power other hardware ;)

Make sure you have a DMM and that you check the actual voltages accross your rails. You may need to put a load of some sort on the 5V line to prevent the PSU from screwing up. Other than that, it should theoretically work. Wires will get damn hot though :D.

DMM = multimeter?
I don't know how I could stress the 5volt line though.

ah hell, if all my TEC's get powered I'm happy :)

hes right, some psus need load on the 5v line to start. check the specs of your psu, it should say something like maximum load on 5v line XXA minimum load on 5v line XA.

a casefan on the 5v line should be enough.

oh, I see. I'll connect a fan at 5v then, and let it cool the wires

hehe lol

Yeah, DMM = Digital Multimeter. I guess an analog one is fine too :D. Assuming the case fan actually spins at 5V, that should be fine. However, keep in mind that some fans won't start at that voltage. I doubt you'll have much in terms of problems though.

according to the manual of my samsung psu it also needs some load on the 5v line, but its starts and runs just fine if i power it up with 2 of the 30W tecs on the 12v line...

I wonder, will it be ok to have a 80w TEC on my 380W antec non dedicated? It has 18A on 12V. I don't want to kill my PSU! :)

I also wonder, will my Toyota Camry heater core be enough to cool a 2,4 C @ 3400MHz and the MCW 50-T to decent temp? It's like a dangerden core.

Thanks!

both are very good, it's even overkill ;)
