i have a ps3 i hardly ever play games on but mainly for home theater use and the fans on the back are to loud i was planning on using the koollance blocks and the rest custom. i was wondering if anyone here has tried anything similar. and if anyone can give me any tips

thanks

Personally, I don't think it is worth it. But that's just me.

if it gets rid of the noise it will be worth it.

ive heard that putting some as5 or mx2 on the gpu/cell instead of the stuff that comes on it, it can drop the temps drastically (i would go mx-2)

That sounds a lot more reasonable.

if it were me, i'd just buy the entire koolance kit (leave it as is) & be done with it - quiet: check

I would just use decent thermal paste and replace the stock fan

I'd get some sound damping material. Line the inside of the case with it if possible. The foam stuff that is painted into car interiors to dampen road noise.

Maybe replace the fans, and paste sounds like a good idea too.

Water cooling would be way too much.

i think i will just redo past and switch out the stock fans for some quiet ones.

water cooling would be way cooler looking though but to much money and work.

Is there even an aftermarket fan available? I was under the impression it was just one large (200mm?) fan.

Let us know what you wind up doing - it would be helpful to see how it plays out. Also, everyone with a PS3 should look into running the F@H client! Fold for team [XS]! It uses about 200w and does a great service to mankind. The most recent projects coming are only about 3 hrs each, so even if you don't leave the PS3 on 24x7, you can really help out.

I would just get a much quieter fan, and some thermal paste.

He's already complaining about the noise. I think that's counterproductive. As to the cooling - at worst, maybe either put it inside a dampened section of the cabinet, or make a small shroud that connects 2-3 120mm fans to the stock fan's intake/exhaust... it won't even turn on!

I've seen that Koolance makes its very own watercooling kit for the XBOX 360. Cost's aroud 300$, but it comes with everything, except for installation instructions, hmmmmm...Interesting. I bet that someone makes a kit specific for PS3 though. Shop around. I think that PS3 you cant use just any EK Blocks though. You have to have some Custom Made ones. But I am not 100% sure, check out Google or something. :)

Have a great Day!

If you're taking it apart to watercool it, why not stick it in a new case and make the whole job a lot easier?

I've been inspired to do something like that by seeing the custom xbox 360 case that Lian-Li showed off at cebit.

how in the hell can you even hear the dam fan, i cant even hear mine at all and its working fine. why would you open something that there is nothing wrong with it. the only system that i have that sounds like my own computer is the 360 my brother has and that thing is louder than my system at its current state of quietness.

the only way for your ps3 to even be heard is if you have that dam thing in a ENT center and have the doors shut for it not to get airflow. try moving it to a open space, like a smart person before you open that thing up and void your warranty

The fan is very quiet, maybe you should try to clean it out first.

Watercooling is a bit drastic if its hardly ever on. Replace the Fans, and thermal paste. You could try lining the inside of the case as well I guess. Watercooling seems a bt silly though.
