Thanks for posting that... very interesting. Looks like 1920x1200 very high is just out of reach, but high dx10 might be playable... even a mixture of the too. Looking forward to playing around with it. Anyhow, from your tests it seems 1650x1080 very high is prob the sweet spot for this card in crysis.

Very nice there DStealth. That is quite the high OC on the card however, I don't think all 9800GX2 will reach this high.

Does anyone know if you can edit clocks and fan speeds via Nibitor and reflash the card so it is permanently like that?

Hi Mascaras. You aren't happening to be running dual displays are you? I am wondering how the GX2 reacts to such setups. Does the secondary display automatically become disabled when 3D is run, just to re-enable when it is closed out? Or do I have to manually enable/disable the display before 3D is run. If this is the case does the system require a reboot after doing so either way, and how long does the process take before it is finished once initiated?

Do you care to comment on the fan noise? Have you tried turning it up for lower temps? Do you find it loud when doing so?

Have you thought about overclocking the card as well? I am curious as to what your particular card can do across the board at max, yet clean and stable clocks.

nice review :D

I'm curious is the shell of the card actually means anything to holding the card together? i mean can you run the card without those two covers (that the stickers are on).
if so would it be feasable to get two HR-03-PLUS's and mount them on each card -just facing outward?

i hope someone understands :D

Ghost742
03-22-2008, 03:29 PM
if the cores are facing each other i dont think it would work, unless the hr-03 has both sided of the mounting polished.

How is IQ bad with fraps? Did you make sure you record at full resolution and not half, although that is going to affect your game performance for sure. I've used fraps quite a lot and I haven't found a program that would record at a better quality. Gamecam for instance was pretty bad in comparison.

I think fraps splits the clips at 4GB by default other than that, I've never had skips or breaks while recording, maybe it's your HD. When I'm recording, I'm saving to 3xHDs in raid0. You need fast HDs for smooth recording.

Ok,but with 2 8800GTs you can do nothing without a SLI board. And that costs some bones more :D .

You forgot to mention the headache that is an Nvidia chipset ;) (790i possibly excluded)

Hey guys... finally got my GX2 installed here.

Pulled 19k @ 4ghz on my CPU, GPU stock on 3dmark 06, which is really quite nice.

Crysis FPS wise runs ALOT faster than my single GTX, however it feels stuttery still, even though most of the time its at or around 30fps. This is both with the 174.53's and 174.60's

Has anyone tried the 174.70's on this card yet?

http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=257054

Will give them a run later.

im using 154.70 since yesterday and Crysis runs very well , and also with 174.53 (here only with 174.60 crysis run bad )

Im using windows vista 64bit

what OS are you using and what Crysis resolution/settings??

On vista x64. Running crysis 64bit, DX10 1920x1200 res. Been playing around with the settings from high to very high, and everything in between. Still seems to stutter, even with all on high, and FPS above 30.

I'll give the 174.70's a shot and see what they can do.

dude dont want to hijack ure thread or anything

but do u get this problem on multi gpu on

First i was playing dota on battlenet .. quit the program.. was on another forum
a forumer asked me to post that multi gpu /multi monitor thingy.
i was on multi gpu mode
and guess what u see in the pic below like almost after 5 minutes

http://s.lowyat.net/uploads//attach-95/post-8895-1206721963_thumb.jpg
full pic at this link.. to see clearer
http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=428791
can see the warcraft 3 dota map mixed with my desktop screenshot eventhough warcraft has been exited. the frames are still in the cards mem??

this is why i think the asus hd3870x2 TOP/ROG Dual Fan /4DVi rocks.. u can crossfire on 2 monitors, play dreamscene on both ( cant do that on this card), even game in windowed mode and watch a movie on the other monitor while msning away with dreamscene running..

this 9800gx2 is only good for ridiculous fps gains on games..
so a pure gamer this card is definitely for u..

just my 2 cents..

Are those overclocks the highest you can get stable and clean?

Hi

nope , i just didnt try push harder yet !

but for what iv´seen in forum and others foruns , all 9800GX2 cards should do at least 730Mhz in core , 1850mhz shaders and 2200Mhz ram with no problems

holy c**p... became so enthousiast after reading this that i ordered one..... just 2 things that i forgot.

1 my psu doesnt have a 8 pin, will this be a problem or can it run on 2x 6 pin.

2 forgot that i already had problems instaling a 9600gt into my case, so i'm hoping this beast isn't to huge.

Hi!

1- depend of manufacturer (XFX dont have 8 pin adapter) but i think BFG or ASUS have !

2 - its the same size as 8800 Ultra or HD3870X2 :p:

In your Frontlines test I noticed you have Foliage turned up. Are you experiencing major halting/stuttering with that turned up? I can play that game maxed out on my Ultra except for that setting. Just about anyone I talked to with any card (besides 9800GX2) has this problem unless Foliage is turned off. It plays great for a few seconds, halts for a few seconds, plays for a few seconds etc.

This was a driver issue afterall. Upon getting the new 1.02 patch for Frontlines I came across this article here.

http://planetfrontlines.gamespy.com/fullstory.php?id=149644

Apparently the new 174.74 drivers fix this issue. Since you are using those to begin with for your testing that is probably why you never came across what I mentioned. No need to waste your time looking into it now!

Hi Mascaras. If you still have the GX2 in your system can you check how the clock frequencies of the card is affected by the adjusting of the PCIE bus in the motherboards bios? I am sure you have heard of how the 9600 gets affected by overclocking the pcie bus, can you see how the GX2 scales when this is done? Meaning if you raise your PCIE bus by say 5%, does the core clocks of the GX2 also go up by 5%? 600mhz (GX2 def. clocks) X 1.05 (105mhz PCIE clocks) = 630mhz GPU clocks in the end, according to Rivatuner monitoring as opposed to 600mhz being read by the driver?

hi

yes , i think all 9000 séries have that (9600GT , 9800GTX & 9800GX2)

EDIT:

Please note that the core clock of both GPUs is dependent on the PCI-Express clock signal, just like on the GeForce 9600 GT.

Ok thanks. I figured as much but was wondering if you could test it out first hand and let me know if it scales exactly as described, and if you actually see the different clocks listed in software and if performance/score increases improve because of it.

Hi Mascaras,

Can I ask you a favour? From what I can tell your figures come from timedemos?

Can you please run fraps in the backround and just observe the average number and report the 'feel'.

The reason I ask is my 3870x2 died and I need to replace it. I have a 24" monitor but played crysis at 1680x1050 'very high'. I got ~20fps but it was playable.
I am using my backup card 88gt and last night, using the same setings i turned on fraps and i got ~20fps with the gt!

I need to know if the gx2 delivers consistant figures and is worth the extra money (the gx2 is twice the price of the gts/gtx) over the 512 gts/98gtx with the 9900 series coming in July...

I understand if you don't have time but I would appreciate it. Thanks for reading!

Very Nice review... I personally went form a 3870X2 to an eVGA 9800GX2 and it was worth every pennie.. this card is much more playable on my 24in monitor.

The only thing i noticed was degraded 2D image quality but not enough to deter me from keeping the card. The 790i board is next on my list. I should've went with XFX tho but i got this one for only $500 shipped USD :)
