Pictures per second. Sorry if thats not the term.
I was thinking about either the canon xt or the nikon d40. I would be open to other brands as well.

Check www.dcresource.com and www.dpreview.com, they have lots of detailed information.

Its called FPS not PPS. That is how the camera manf. rate it.

the XT and D40 are the older variants. The current models are the D40x and XTI, with the D60 and XSi just announced (available in a couple of months).

My personal preference was the D40x (high res), but both the D40 and XT are good cameras.

If you are concerned with FPS, then the D40x is the winner here. It has the Same FPs as the XTi, but can do continuous 3 FPS with JPG format, assuming you get a good enough SD card.

If the D40x and XTi are too expensive the XT is the slightly better choice over the D40 if all you are concerned about is FPS.

Before you buy either one go to your local camera shop and try them out (or Target for the d40 and Rebel XT). How the camera feels in your hands is a big concern.

I could do between 2-3fps with my Canon S3 - 3 doesn't seem very impressive from a DSLR. I would look for more, but that's just me :)

Agree with Max though, you really need to get a feel for the camera and make sure your hands will feel right at home with the thousands of pictures you will end up taking with it.

Frames per second, I thought that was for video cards. Anyway, I thought the xt/xti gets 5 fps for up to 25 pics or somewhere around there. The xti is about 150-200 more $ then the xt.:(

nope. both the XTi and D40x are 3 FPS. You will need a D300 for 6-8 FPS (depending on battery) or for 9 FPS you will need a D3. 11 FPS for the D3 in JPG mode. The fastest canon does is 10 FPS with the 1D-Mark III. In any case, to get above 3 FPS you need to drop ALOT of cash.
