ok I've just bought a used D5 vario and it doesn't pump, am I missing something here?
does it not "plug and play" ?

Yep. Be sure the inlet is not pointing downwards and you don't have the inlet/outlet mixed up.
outlet is the top port right?

Check the molex connection, maybe it's loose.
the molex is the black wire on the outer of the molex and the red wire is on the inside.
shouldn't it be the red wire on the outside and the black wire on the inside?

There's your problem. The red is supposed to be on the outside, black on the outside.

The black should always be on the inside.
still doesn't work even with the red wire on the outside
You sure its fully primed with water ? You'rte not starting it dry, are you ? You sure there's no gigantic air bubble inside the pump?
there's tube with water on the inlet.
I think I know what's wrong here, the red wire is suppose to go to the yellow wire of the PSU molex, no? I think I have it on red-red

You are correct, the pump takes 12V and thats the yellow wire.
EDIT: Yup just took my side panel off and the red wire form the d5 plugs into the yellow wire on the molex...
awesome, it works. thanks everyone!
