What's the best DVD burner out there at the moment?

I'm pretty sure the latest DVD burners can all burn at speeds which exceed media ratings (20x, with most media being rated 16x). Brand is almost effectively irrelevant, I'm quite sure that no major manufacturer has a defect rate noticeably higher than any other. They also all pretty well come with the same standard software. I say get whatever LG/Samsung/Lite On drive seems to be the cheapest (but make sure to get a SATA version).

I know I will avoid Samsung SATA for the next year or so.
Keeps acting up and braking down on me. I had 3 units braking down on my PCs around the house, not bought the at the sime time.

Umm, because the PATA bus isn't exactly sticking around. A lot of motherboards being made now don't even have it.

Have too many hard drives? Get a software RAID controller... they're cheap unlike the hardware controllers and provide the same performance as on-board stuff, maybe a little better depending.

SATA is more trouble-free to install. that is the main idea. other than that there is no real difference

And yet they still have a floppy connection...

Actually I haven't seen any mobos with no PATA yet.

The floppy I'll allow, but only because of XP/2003 RAID issues... it's a stupid limitation though, I wish MS would just release an updated installer that we could download an image of that would let us use USB etc.

Anyway, maybe not consumer boards, but server boards... and consumer won't be too far behind.

if all burners are pretty equal in performance,

which are the quietest/lightest drives?

my wife's Samsung 20x is the fastest, quietest ting I've seen. My old Phillips 20x I sold for a song cause it was so loud. I may get one like hers. but I'll probably just continue to run headless...

If price wasnt too much of a factor, plextor's drives are known to last for friggin' ever. :)

That were my thoughts also.
I must have had bad luck with hardware. (which is nothing new to me:rolleyes: )

The real question which is the quietest, thats true!

I prefer Pioneer at the moment. Fewer "issues."

i've got my old NEC drive that has been faithful for years. only drawback is it is a loud cd reader. i've been eyeing this samsung though for when i decide to swap (mainly when i start the rebuild in my new case)

I like Lite-Ons in General..
But I'm looking for a good model of any reputable brand that burns CD-Rs at 2x (my liteon does min of 8x :( )

Consider those, Plextor is by far the best DVD burners out there. :)

I'm using a Sony DRU 830A.

It does everything except lightscribe. I'm very pleased with it and would recommend it

LG sata here, no coasters yet after 8 months and 1/2 the price of a plextor ;)

I'm using a Lite-On. 20x DVD+/-R, SATA, with Lightscribe. I got the Lightscribe since it was about the same as non-Lightscribe, and I may just want some professional-looking CD's and DVD's in the future.

Plextor has sold rebadged NEC drives in the past, I can't comment on the current situation. NEC makes good quality drives, but there's no reason to pay extra for rebadging ;)

these choices.

This thread is made me look up lightscribe for the first time, and I want it :)

I would get the Samsung 203N, it along with the 203B(same as the 203N but without lightscribe) have received great reviews at CD freaks and other sites. I got my 203N and it seems good so far for the few Verbatim DVD-Rs and CD-Rs I have burned.

is there an ide version?

Star_Hunter

Yes the 203N also has a PATA model that is exactly the same thing. Do you not have any free SATA ports or do you just perfer a PATA for some reason, as far as benchmarks go PATA and SATA are the same speed.
