All,

I know this sounds stupid - but what is the difference between the Phenom 9600 regular and the Black Edition? They're the same price on NewEgg, show the same specifications, etc.

Only difference is the BE comes WITHOUT the heatsink.. Why is that?

If the BlackEdition and non-BlackEdition chips cost the same obviously the BlackEdition would be the better buy.

any warranty difs? be a good way to never have to replace voltage killed chips

As far as I know the warranty is the same for both chips.

As mentioned the only difference between the two chips is the BE has an unlocked multiplier.

I don't think you can get a BE chip as an OEM package but I could be wrong.

That's usually not a very good reason ;)

The BE is not always the better buy. My BE only went up to 2.84 on 1.3v, HTT maxed at 235. My 9600 regular hit 300 HTT and does 3ghz on 1.3v and I can get much better performance out of it.

Oh I hope mine I just bought isn't one of those pithy ones :(

oh and "Location: Northeast Ohio, Where the weather changes every 30 min..." - LOL I agree with you on that! Was 40-ish today, I just look out side and WHOA where'd all that snow come from :lol2:

I'm thinking more along the lines that my 9600 was just a really good pick. Only thing it won't do is handle voltage over 1.325 to make it more stable once I got to much past 3ghz, but 3ghz is game stable for me at 1.3v.

Edit: Yeah, the snow was a bit on the unexpected side for me.

9600BE's come with a better stock HSF and

Unlocked NB Multi up and down
Unlocked CPU Multi up and down
Unlocked HT Multi up and down
Unlocked CPU and CPU NB VID/Voltages
190HT Ref. lowest

Standard 9500/9600 doesn't have these options apart from CPU VID/Volts. :)

Is it possible to overclock BE only by rising a multiplier?

It might not like it, but you can.
