Hello!

It seems like it's been close to a year that I have been planning this out and reading, reading, reading, everything that I could once I stumbled upon XS.

Funnily, I can't even remember how I came across XS in the first place, it may have been one of those random google searches where I stumbled across this site by accident. And stumbling some more, I found myself in the LC section of XS and I was like 'what the f**k? Water in the case, are they nuts?' But it was something about the tubes and the beauty of clean cases and the shiny blocks (ohhhh the blocks :slobber: ) that got me hooked.

I started reading (like I already said) and began making tentative posts trying to learn what I could, and mostly trying to emulate a sponge. To some aspects, i think I've managed pretty well, but some days it becomes glaringly obvious that I'm still wet behind the ears and green in the gills and noob with a capitol N (and really whatever other idiom that implies lack of knowledge) as I slap my head and just say 'doh!'.

I'm learning all the time, and owe a marabou to just about everyone on this forum. And those of you that I've PM'd and recieved help from, here's a big
THANKS for you.

To get started, you'll see that I ramble a bit, and I hope that I can keep your attention long enough to finish the build.

I thought about giving you a list of stuff that I have, but then I was like 'nah, everyone appreciates pron pics instead', so here's a pic of hardware. . .

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans040.jpg

AS it is, some of this may change or has changed or may not even fit in the case itself. Of course the case will be watercooled, but I'll get to that later on as we go.

Ya prolly wanna see the case now right?

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans016.jpg

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans041.jpg

Watercooling would be a definite in the case, so I needed to make a cut somewhere to fit a PA120.2 (I have a pa160 here as well, but I haven't decided if I need it or not, as I won't be OC'ing and will have 1 GPU. After talking to Marci several times, he also felt that the 120.2 alone would be enough for my needs. I'll see how it goes, and if I'm happy with temps, Rock On! If not, well the beauty of modding is that I can always go back in, hehe) and that a requirement for me would be an internal case. Hats off to everyone that has big rads in these little cases, but for the life of me I couldn't see how to get a 120.3 in here without an external mount. Anyway, I needed to make a cut, and went with a top mount.

Little taping first.

After:

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans004.jpg

I know how everyone recommendeds a jigsaw for all case cuts, but since we didn't have one, I went with a dremel as that was what I had. And I've never used one of those before either. I thought the cut came out ok.

I knew that I wanted to get in and make some cuts for the mobo tray, and being that this is my first build ever, I wanted to do everything right. So I started to look around the case and decide what the easiest way would
be to do that, and I figured if I took out the mobo tray, it would be easier to accomplish. Except I couldn't find how to do that. The easy way that is. So one rivet led to another, and before I knew it, I had this:

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans005.jpg

DOH!

Since the case was in pieces, I needed to take some pics so i could get it back together. . . at least that's what I hoped

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans006.jpg

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans007.jpg

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans008.jpg

I have a ton more raw pics like those, but I figured you get the idea.

So, since I bumbled into this mess, I wanted to do something about the insides and thought a nice black finish would go good with the look I'm trying to achieve. Off to the powdercoaters went the whole case!!! Let's see what that looks like in a few days when it comes back.

(if pic size is a prob, let me know and I'll resize them)

So you are going to use a ThermoChill PA.120.3? :)

Interesting. I like your build. I will be keeping a close-ey to this project. ;)

He's not build anything yet. :P

Regardless sounds like a very nice project.

What are you going to rivit the case back togheter with ? Alu rivits or Steel rivits ? The original rivits were Alu.

Allright, Allright. I know that was a little unfair, I should have posted more pics in the first place, and not just teased you with the ones I did.

I have no idea where the case is going to go, I'm kind of whinging it. But, I have a theme that I want to stick with, and then I'll see if I can incorporate some cool cut into the window. Because I gotta have a window!!

Oh right. Theme. Well, I really like the way black and silver looks together, like black and chrome is just sick in my eyes. I looked into getting some parts chromed, like I thought that would be just insane to see a chromed rad and chromed pump, and like chrome everything.

So I started calling around locally to see what kind of quotes I could get, and after countless hours on the phone trying to explain: 1) no, I'm not joking, 2) No, it's not car radiator, 3) Yes, it goes in a computer, 4)Yes I said 'Water inside the computer, and 5) You want to charge me how much? I gave up on finding any local shop to do my chroming.

Well, out went the idea of chroming stuff. But I've learned in my life that not everything can be reached direct from point A to B, sometimes the path meanders a bit. In this meander, I settled on different aspirations, but still going after the look that I wanted.

To get there, I knew that I needed to see a specialist. Only a specialist would have what I was looking for. And I found just the specialist here in Stockholm.

These Guys rock!!

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans054.jpg

But first, before I get to those goodies, here's a little more before shots:

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans057.jpg

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans059.jpg

I like this one, it shows the cut (before it got real pretty) and some attatchemnt details that I'll need for later

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans058.jpg

Did anybody catch my little reference in the background (I know it's a little blurry, that was the point) in the first cut picture of the rad hole in my first post?

Anyway, back on track.

So I decided to see Sifverts today while I waited for the case to come back from the powdercoaters, and I picked up some goodies. . .

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans056.jpg

Quite a few actually. My wife saw the bag, and then like all wives (hey, no harm no foul here, I'm calling it just like I see it) she saw the reciept and was like 'YOU SPENT HOW MUCH ON SCREWS??? HAVE YOU LOST YOUR MIND??'

Sadly, I couldn't think of an answer to that question.

To continue, trying to get in touch with my inner theme, I went and visited these guys, and I'm always amazed at how geeky people can be. Even when I'm feeling like a big geek, somebody comes along and out geeks me. Nobody blinked when I came in and said 'I just took my computer apart into like 30 pieces, and I think I may need some screws to get it back together'. The kind folks took me by the hand (not literally, but you get my drift) and we walked around the store together putting stuff into little bags. I described what I wanted, what I wanted to achieve, and roughly what I thought the hole sizes were.

Here's what we came up with:

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans047.jpg

Those guys above will be in places of rivets, or where something needed to sit flush. I wanted to stick with hexcant screws (I think they''re called socket heads in english) as I liked the 'industrial' 'deco' look of them.

To continue (I think everyone should have some of these) :
M4
http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans055.jpg

M3 and M4 together
http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans052.jpg

a difference in size perspective
http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans051.jpg

I figure the M4's I'll use to attatch something big (like the rad maybe?) to the case, and the M3's could come in handy as general screws. I have some M5 chromed hexcants that I found on ebay, I'll take a pic of those when I get them. I'm going to see what size I like the most to attatch the rad and the grill to the top of the case.

For the rad, I knew I might need some of these, so I got them in the respective sizes to the screws above :

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans053.jpg
Those are the 'locknuts' that have the little plastic ring on the inside.

And the Pièce de résistance (these were so expensive that they're the ones that made my wife flip out):

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans048.jpg

DOMEHEADS!!!

Saw some of these and figured 'ah what the heck, I may need them':

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans050.jpg

But then I realized, if I needed to make more cuts, the case would already be pc'ed and I'd shake like a junkie cold turkey after 4 days trying get the hole saw straight. Oh well, I have the bad feeling I may make some more cuts anyway. Live and learn.

I wonder what these are for???

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans049.jpg

No seriously, what are they for?

The kind people at Sifverts said I may need some of these anyway, so I got some, M3 of course:

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans046.jpg

Lastly, I think I may have to do something about this:

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans045.jpg

I don't really like that button. I'll see if I can do something about it.

I love the line about the wife commenting the purchase of small things :p I got the same thing recently with 10 feets of Tygon R3400. Mine said "Are you nuts to pay over 30$ for tubing when you can get it at the local hardware store"... I had to explain the differences and in the end, said she dosn't mind spending 100$ on pieces of clothing when 20$ is enough just to convice her to leave me alone.

ya I know :(

Problem was I bought almost everything I have in July/August on vacation in the US. Now I think I may drop that card in my other computer and buy the new GT, Ihave my eye on this one : http://www.evga.com/products/moreInfo.asp?pn=512-P3-N806-AR

which surprisingly is available here, no probs. I just have to wait to pay day. . .
Same goes for the e6850 that I have in the box, untouched. I don't know if it's worth it to get the e8500 instead. . .

Other mini-projects to do:
1) Heat Pipe mod by Ace-a-Rue on the IP35
2) Stealth DVD Mod inspired by Cyprio inspired by phcjpp
3) learn to wire LED's
4) something special with the PA120.2

Had a little birthday party to plan/attend/host before I could get started on putting the computer back together.

My son's first Birthday!
http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans60.jpg
Had too much cake, but the sugar helped me get started on putting together the case.

Used the tapered M3 socket heads in place of rivets where I could.

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans019.jpg

From the inside, you see how the domeheads really come into play. . .

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans027.jpg

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans022.jpg

put in my front port and pc'd the logo (looks more stealth this way)

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans023.jpg

sleeved the front port cables (just to give you a taste of the what's coming on the sleeves)

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans024.jpg

wasn't too happy when I saw this, but at this point there's nothing I could do (no, that's not a fingerprint, it's permanent -bad powdercoaters! )

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans035.jpg

but, let's leave the anger behind, and see how the back turned out with those M3 Socket Heads (YUMMY!)

Are you ready to play spot the mistake??? I'm going to show you a picture, and it wasn't until I was editing it, that I realized I forgot to do something important BEFORE it was pc'd

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans34.jpg

I won't tell you what the answer is, I'll leave you guessing for a day or two, but it's such a noob mistake!

Anyway, that's it for now, but I'll leave with a sneak peak of the next mini project I have going on for this case. . .

I'm wondering also if he shouldn't have done something to ensure an optical drive will still fit in the bay after the powdercoating. It's already fairly snug when stock, the additional paint there may end up getting scraped off.

In any case, both problems can be corrected and shouldn't be terribly visible (if at all) from the outside of the case. It's looking great, and your pictures are very, very good. Keep up the good work!

Really nice work going on here m8. Good to see some more Swedes buildings these kind of nice rigs.
I can agree with you about sifvert, they have a good range of products, though they are a bit expensive. I think for personal use like this, they add like 90% to the cost of the bolts / screws, so, they are a bit pricy :)

Interesting powder-coat, please send me a PM if you feel like it, would like to know how you got the pieces coated :)

Oh, and will the side panels still fit on after you put in the new screws and with the powdercoating? They are pretty snug against the rivets on my case.

@mattc, Xilikon, - yupp, that was the answer. haha. I'm sure I'll find a couple more along the way.

@64dragon - way, waaaaayyy too much. I spent a long time on the phone looking for someone to take me serious about pc'ing the computer, and after reading how most ppl on this forum seem to get it done for a 6 pack or equivalent is beyond me. I paid too much 1000kr (don't forget our 25%tax) = $155 , only plus was it was for everything, inside, out and extra pieces. I think the guy felt guilty taking that much money, so he told me I could get a couple more pieces done at no cost).

@nysoo - I'll shoot you a pm with the name of the company after work, if I remember correctly, you're 08'are oxo? IAF, look at first post, I dismanteled the chassi completely.

@technodanvan - no worries, it fits.

@headala - yupp, np!

@crazyjoe - right! Now I just need to learn how to wire LED's. . . .

@crazyjoe - right! Now I just need to learn how to wire LED's. . . .

Try this site - http://led.linear1.org/led.wiz

Just check the box for "wiring diagram" and then type in the Volts, Forward Voltage, Forward Current, and number of LED's in your loop. ( The LED's technical information should be on the site you bought them from )

And a full wiring schematic / diagram is displayed ... excellent site !

I think it's because it's the not the usual glossy finish. I much prefer it to the gloss stuff. looks much higher quality than spray paint, and you'd hopes so too at the difference in costs!

LogAn'sRun
02-11-2008, 10:01 PM
Ya, the finish isn't high gloss, it's semi, and that's what I wanted. I know that the color may not be what you ahve seen before (I mean finish), but there is a HUGE difference in the durability and smoothness to the finish that would be harder and more time consuming for me to do myself. MAy not show in the pics so much, but it's PC'd, trust me.

"Grattis" = "Congratulations" My son's name is actually Logan. ;)

Thanks for all the well wishes and comments!

Small update -

In waiting for some final parts to come in (from a small boat in China), I thought I would do what I could with the peripheral stuff.

Today I go around to the DVD stealth, and the Mobo heat pipe mod (both are accredited to various members here)

mobo(shots aren't the best, but you get it) :

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans043-1.jpg

All screws had been changed out to brass to match the heatsinks, plus shortened, tightened down and applied with new pads

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans042-1.jpg

DVD stealth (incomplete, waiting on faceplate):

I've always liked the look of the stealthed drive, and I knew I'd want to do this mod as well. I haven't decided on what's going to cover it, as I'm not sure what's going in the front of the case yet.

I'm a total nab when it comes to electrical stuff, so my solder job is far far far from good, but it got the job done. I know that I want to move the button to the bottom of one of the doors, so I felt inspired by another mod I had seen, and looked for the connector piece that he had used. and would you know it, I found it locally, same unit!

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans013.jpg

I needed to do the psu mod (geez these pics were blurry)

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans012.jpg

It worked, LED and all! I cut out the LED from the front panel, so I could use the one on the Bulgin, and then I drilled a hole out the back panel to hide the wires and make it look 'factory'. And so we have a finished dvd.

Not really.

I thought, ok, I have this cool mod, but ugly ass case which will look out of place in the black interior.

SO I took the covers off the DVD, and did a light sandpappering with 1500 grit

Here's where I got the connector I mentioned earlier, it's a 4 pin connector (2 LED, 2 PWR)

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans066.jpg

sleeved the wiring and did a little shrinking

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans062.jpg

I think it came out allright

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans061.jpg

So know I have some other little stuff to do, before I get to the WC bit. But I have a question first, I know I've seen recently someone take the pin off the DDC3,2 and wire it into a single 3 pin connector, but why? What's that blue cable for anyway? I might have to do this, because it's a cleaner connection.

And then after seeing the countless Murderbox copies with the PSU sleeving (and really getting most inspired by Mekrel), I'm going to try that too. It'll either end in disaster, or look really nice. I'm hoping for the former.

I found these beautiful socket/button head screws in titanium:

do you know anyone in stockholm selling regular 2mm aluminium sheet?

I was looking for this myself, but had a hard time to find any
that was not so expensive, so in the end I made an order from
Studiedata/Danmark and bought AC Ryan's MeshX & Hexx

But the alu-sheet is only 1mm thick! and you wanted 2mm? :(

I made an order for these Items:

Blue wire from the DDC is the signal wire, RPM. If you plug it into your cpu socket fan header, it gives you pump rpm read out in Everest etc and what ever bios protection your board has.

@NysoO, I couldn't tell you the part number as I walk into the Solna shop and just buy it straight outta the box. But I also have bought some random sizes in a mix package I found at Bauhas the other day. It may be the Bauhas stuff. . .BTW, ALU Platt 2000mm*1500mm*1mm was 749:- or something like that there. Could be a little wider, but I know it was 2000mm long and only 1mm thick.

@Vargher Warg my PC'ing was done here (http://http://www.lackcenter.se/), but see if you can get a better price than what I got. And let me know how much that shipping was from DK, and how dark that Ryan AC plexi is, I'm interested in that!

I'm going to visit CGT in my sportlov så we'll se what the 2000 * 1000 * 2mm sheet will cost. Through mail he said that it would cost 486kr + moms which is ~600kr for us. Think it's a really nice price.

Hi!

I just received the Acryl and the MeshX I ordered last week.
(the Alusheet and the Hexx-mesh is coming soon - i had to split the order)

OK! the acryl is not black 'per se', I'd rather call it a smoked grey tint.
But that's allright with me, now you could see some of the interior of
your PC without a light behind the acryl - I really like this smoked grey tint! :)

(If you're looking for 'no see through' and really black acryl - this is not it)

It came well wrapped with cardboard around it.

The shipping from Denmark was 170 DKK
to the front door of my house - for these two Items.

1 DKK is about 1.25 SEK so I paid 214 SEK for the shipping.

Could you do me a favor and take a picture of the Acryl with a) normal lighting in the room and b)with some sort of lighting behind it (if you had CCFl's or LED's that would be perfect) so I can see how grey and/or dark it is? Those prices are pretty good compared to what Simglas takes locally for something similiar. I am interested in black or darker Acryl, but I'll wait and see what you got.
How's the mesh?

And yes, those screws were nice, about the same price as I paid for the domeheads -lol

Unfortunately I don't have any camera at home for the moment - sorry! :(
But I found these pictures when I did my research before I bought mine :
http://www.watercoolinguk.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1635

http://www1.acryan.com/_acrylpanel/index.shtml

As you can see It's not very dark, I would not call it black.
The acryl is a translucent blackish/dark greyish panel, and it may not be
what you're looking for - but it has a nice price.

Right now I'm looking for a more "black acryl panel" to put
as a window on my TJ07, so I'll tell you if I find one in or near Sweden.

Akriform in Sollentuna has all sorts of plexi, and a friend bought last year
from them, a very nice dark and more black acrylpanel .

http://www.akriform.se/ (rökfärgad eller röktonad acryl)

It was also translucent so you could see through, but the color was
more dark and more blackish than the AC Ryan's panel.

I think he bought it for around 500 SEK, you could give them a call and ask!

I'm planning to visit them myself in a near future to see if they have some?

The MeshX is perfect for my plans, you could bend it at the edge of a table
and have any form you like to have, this mesh don't have any good airflow though!

For a good airflow I recommend the HexxMesh which has 75% free airflow.
The MeshX only have about 50% of free airflow, so It's maybe better off
to be used as building material or similar.

Regards!

Small update

I've been collecting some fittings for some time, trying to decide what to use with the blocks that I own.

On friday, a long awaited package came straight from China (thanks Vincent!).

Are these not beautiful???

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans085.jpg

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans083.jpg

Shame that I learned also on friday, that they won't fit any block I own!!! So the big, moral dilema came down to spending another 800-1300kr on new blocks to make these fittings work, or just using the barbs that I have. The blocks that I own are the D-Tek Fuzion and the MCW-60; the rad is the PA120.2 (which would need reducers to fit the BP's). I can post pics of the blocks and rad (which I have a special treat for you there) later, when I get closer to set-up, but here's barb pics for now, so you can see the difference between them and the BP's.

Dtek 3/8"

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans082.jpg

Dtek 3/8" compared to the 1/2" (which I tried to use, but with 1/8" walled tubing, forgedddaabowwwtit)

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans081.jpg

3/8" BSP 3/8" Barb - Nickel (rad fittings, shame I have to use sealing tape)

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans080.jpg

Here's some custom fittings/elbows/T's that Martin made for me, which I'm very proud of, and hoping to use somewhere, as they are just so damn cool!

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans079.jpg

Some fittings mounted on the MCW-60 to show you clearance

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans077.jpg

Same block, with BP's

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans078.jpg

Can you say clearance? Nope. There isn't any. I thought, well you could use the BP's, if you cut away the delrin under the metal hold-down plate in the front, but then what would that do to the overall integrity of the delrin, if I shaved off 1-2mm for clearance? Usch, not worth it.

So it's either buy new blocks, or use the barbs instead. I'm really torn on that, because it comes down to looks vs performance. And that's a whole can of worms right there. I might wait to see what the results of nikshub1's testing of the EK is compared to the fuzion, before I make my mind up. It's only money right??

Anyway, I had 4 hours of mod time last night, so I spent an hour taking pics (that you've seen), and trying to get the BP's to fit on anything I have, and then roughly three hours doing the sleeving on my ATX. Yeah, I know, it's been done before, but I really like the look of it, and think it came out pretty good.

It was about here though, that I said, what the hell am I doing???? Do I really want to go down this path. . . .

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans075.jpg

One brand new Seasonic PSU warranty just voided. . .

But I have to agree with Mekrel when he posted this 'I've re-sleeved my PSU, as I don't like the fishnet stuff most PSU's come with'. Even Seasonic didn't have the best quality sleeving. Which makes you wonder, I paid over 1200kr for this PSU, the least they could do is use decent sleeving. Oh well.

Getting the pins out was no easy feat. I used the Sunbeam (http://http://www.petrastechshop.com/supsumotokit.html) tool kit for pin removal, and they have a handy tool for 24ATX pin's, and even with that, it was an extreme PITA. It wasn't until the 6th or 7th pin that I discovered a little trick that made it easy peasy. Push harder.

Anyway, it was still time consuming and I'm still stressed over the job and wondering if I got all the wires in the right place. We'll see.

Here I realized that it was going to be a long night. I cranked up my ipod (10,000 songs on shuffle I was bound to hear something I liked) and started chanting 11 more to go. 11 more to go

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans087.jpg

Ahh, the finish line was in sight!!!! I not only wrote down a spec sheet with a drawing of every wire placement on the pin, but I took pictures of the ATX pin before the job. And used tape to number the overall placements. Hence the blue stuff you see. . .

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/LOGANS073.jpg

Looking better

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans074.jpg

3 Hours later (damn, no speed record), and I was done!!!!!

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans086.jpg

Not too shabby eh? I guess it will look a lot better in the case.

AHHHHH!!! Had written a really long post, only to fubar it before posting. AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! Makes me want to cry. . .

Starting over:

After my trip to Norway was ruined (1600km and 20hrs later) due to bad weather, I came home early and decided to alleviate my sadness with a little work.

Got these in the mail today, and can I say they are beauts!!!

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans095.jpg

Fine craftsmanship!

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans094.jpg

Have to give a big thanks to my friends in China (Vincent and the gang) for sending me these connectors which solves the MCW60 problem. Now the fittings will work, no problems! Check out this thread (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showpost.php?p=2804250&postcount=48) as it gives you a better idea with the end result.

So my next dilema is this. And I wouldn't mind you guys weighing in a little here as I need some opinions. I'm torn between what I should do with the front panel. I have three idea's, ranging from easy to hard in difficulty in accomplishing them. Here they are:

Idea's

1. Use Lian Li bay covers to stealth front. Use bay cover over DVD, and cut up a cover to use for Fan Control Panel. Difficulty- easy.
2. Use a smoked grey/black acrylic piece as the front panel. Would have to have the DVD slot door Laser/water cut for perfection, and then could do the FC panel myself. Would not sit flush w/ case. Difficulty -medium.
3. Use a 1mm alu panel (sanded and polished) for front cover. Use 1-3 led's to light behind panel allowing you to see into the front of the case. Would expose DVD and FC wiring (not sexy). Would need to do same laser/watercutting for the DVD door slot as number 2. Would want it to sitt flush with case. Difficulty - hard.

The difficulty ratings are based on my skill sets, which are none. :)

Moving on. I wanted to uniform the color a little more inside the case, and decided that these (http://www.petrastechshop.com/enddpufocome.html) would do nicely to replace the stock heat spreaders on 4GB's of Crucial Ballistix 8500's that I have.

I got the pure copper spreaders to match the heat sinks on the Mobo. The directions seemed simple enough.

Take this:

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans030.jpg

Add this:

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans031.jpg

Strip it:

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans029.jpg

Get this:

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans028.jpg

Not bad eh? Too bad that efter doing 3 sticks with no problems, I was feeling confident and either A)pulled too hard, or B)the glue was too strong on the spreaders resulting in C)me pulling to hard. Because I ended up with a Micron D9 in my palm. Long story short, there was much crying because I realized that I voided the warranty by touching the spreaders in the first place. After balling like a small baby ( and I know what that sounds like because my son reminds me all the time), I manned up and did the only thing I could do - order another set.

Amazingly DDR2 prices and Crucuial having been falling through the floor, and overnight I watched Komplett drop the price by a couple hundred crowns. I got another set pretty cheap. So now I have 5GB's of ram and one 32bit OS. Looks like I need to upgrade my OS soon. . .

My next project involves the Thermochill PA120.2. I originally wanted to chrome it, and after calling, and calling, and calling around, I found someone who would only charge me a leg (allowing me to keep my arm) to do it. If I did the prep work my self. IE sand and strip.

Now I wish that I had taken pictures of stage 1 and 2, but i didn't. Stage 1 involved me taking an old baby bum rag and some handy paint remover, and applying said remover to said rag to said rad. And after a few wipes, it was done. No kidding. I literally applied the remover to the not so thick TC paint, and it came off faster than I could get my camera on. Literally a 3 minute job.

Feeling enthused, I moved to stage 2. Stage 2 involved my sanding the rad to a mirror finish. Why mirror? Because that's what the chromers said I had to do.

I started with 320grit and worked my way up increasing the grit size (or really decreasing) by 200 or so all the way to 2000 wet/dry. I did this all by hand. By hand because I don't have a sander. I wish I did now. All in all, I thinkit took me close to 10 hours of sanding and polishing. I didn't take any pictures here either, because by the end, I was so tired in the arms, that I couldn't lift the camera.

Stage 3 involved me polishing the rad with some Autosol. Here I found an attatchment buffer for my drill which I took advantage of. And when I was done, I said to myself - 'self, who needs chroming? This thing puts the bad in bad-azzzz!!!!!! '

BEHOLD THE VIRGIN PA120.2 IN ALL IT'S GLORY!

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans089.jpg

Do you get a twinkle in your eye?

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans088.jpg

Well Well Well.

I have to admit, I feel very guilty that I haven't been updating this as regulary as I should. I could make all sorts of excuses as to why, but I'll just sort it out with "life". Doesn't life always seem to get in the way of things that we want to do?

Anyhoo, I commented in another thread (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=179619) here on XS, how we haven't had any snow this year in Stockholm, or at least any to really talk about. And what happens?

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans110.jpg

Happy Easter!!

Somebody obviously thought it would be funny to dump some snow on us this late in the season. BTW, that's a frozen lake you're looking at, not a field of snow.

Been having some complications in the modding world. Mostly because a)fear of failure (very philisophical here as the closer I get to the end, the more the outcome will be undeniable and proven whether or not it's a success); and b) seeing so many insane mods around that I see an idea and think, man I need to incorporate that into my mod. But alas, I think all of B has a lot to do with A. So I need to get myself in gear and just finish the damn thing.

If it hasn't been said before, this is my first time modding, and my second computer build. So everything that I've done, or am doing, is trial by error and asking amny many mannnnyy questions. One important axiom that I've learned is "measure twice, cut once". In my case, I need to start doing this. because honestly, I've just kind of winged it, and eyeballed all my measurements.

But let's get on with some modding!!!

I wanted to put some lighting in the case, and I bought one set of the short CCFL's, but I may or may not use them. But in the meantime, I thought I'd try and wire up some LED's. Go look at one of those earlier posts, and you'll see some resistors in there :)

Having never done LED's before, I spent like an hour grilling the poor sap behind the counter at ELFA as to the best way to do it, and what size resistors I would need. To be honest, he may have been right in what he said, but man, there has to be an easier way to do it!

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans106.jpg

He explained that I needed to run them in parallel, and that I would need basically 2 wires running off of every leg of the LED into the next LED. 2 wires + 2 wires + 2 legs X 4 LED's was a lot of wiring and made my head hurt. Add to that mess that I've never ever in my life soldered something besides carving my intials into my grandpa's work bench when I was like 6, that meant one huge headache. This strand took my hours. So many hours, I don't even want to talk about it.

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans107.jpg

You can see how the positive/negative wires run from every leg and sure, it may look all right, but it was one royal pain in da ass. If anyone can give me better advice, including pictures!!, I'm all ears.

To continue, the ELFA assitant explained that I would need power to the strings, and did I want them on all the time, or some of the time? Damn good question. Considering that I wanted a little bling, and not 24/7 in your face pimp, I said correctly 'some of the time!'. He said I would need to wire them into a rocker switch, and not a momentary. I was like 'huh'? Seeing that there was a massive line of customers that has now backed up behind me, he gave me a simplified explanation and diagram of the difference between the two. Plus, when I told him about the CCFL's, and how I wanted one switch to rule them allllll (sorry, couldn't help myself), he explained I would need a relay to trigger one when I turned on the other. We'll see if I do this right later when I get closer to deciding where I'm going to be drilling poor 18mm holes in my case for the rocker.

But here's the molex:

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans104.jpg

That ugly white molex has got to go. This next pic may explain a little of the wires coming out of that molex:

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans105.jpg

I know it's a little blurry, but what I did was solder a smaller wire onto the male pin of the molex which I'll be bringing back to the rocker later on.

After a week of rest from this trial, and some bottles of amnesia (hyuck hyuck), I decided that wiring LED's wasn't so bad and perhaps I should do some more. When I drove down to the guys who sold me some Acrylic (and dammit if I haven't forgotten the name, but when I remember it, I'll post it here) I got some really nice 4mm clear scraps for 20kr which is like nothing. I also bought a nice piece for my window, which we'll see later. The smoked window piece was pretty cheap as well, at least as far as other prices I've heard. I picked up a 4mm 50cm*52cm for 200kr. Not bad eh?

Anyway, with the scrap pieces I made this:

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans108.jpg

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans103.jpg

Not bad for a little dremel and file work? I can see why people recommend a scroll saw for this, but meh, don't have one.

Now that was done, I needed to set about getting some more LED's. I began the slow work of soldering and putting on the resistors.

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans109.jpg

I thought I would try and do something a little different, and instead of having a mess of wires like in the other string, I thought I would solder together 2 strings of 2 led's in series. But in parallel if you follow what I'm saying. Of course, I wanted to sleeve them, so it looks a little like this. . .

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans097.jpg

A little cleaner. ;)

Now I needed to get the acrylic piece wired, which meant that I needed to to drill 4mm holes into the case and the acrylic cover, and shove the LED's in there, and then put a little hot glue to protect and keep them in place.

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans096.jpg

I did that 4 times, ran the wires behind the mobo, and into the other string just for fun. It all worked!!!!

Here's the money shot

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans098.jpg

When I get a better camera other than my Point 'n Shoot, I'll post some cleaner night shots. Otherwise, squint your eyes a little, and immaagginne the bliing.

Lastly, having bought the super Bitspower fittings, I needed to shelf my fuzion (may be a mistake, but oh well), nozzle kit and pro mount. Which meant I needed to find a low restrictive cpu block that would fit the BP's. I really had my eye on the EK, but given the restrictive nature of it, I had to look elsewhere. Which meant. . .

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans102.jpg

Thanks to Martin's testing, looks like I won't need that AC top either. I got me some nice packages in the mail from the UK. And those little packages had these:

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans101.jpg

Pretty Sweet!

BP's fit!!

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans099.jpg

The only complaint that I have, is that the base isn't a mirror finish as seen in some other posts. Given that it's flat, I may just try and polish it and see what difference that makes. But take a look at this pic, should I be worried about these microscratches, or is this standard?

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans100.jpg

What do you guys think?

That's it for now. I have some other minor stuff to do before I start assembling, but it feels like it's getting closer to the end, or maybe I'm just delusional. . .

Now I need to decide between an Aquaero or a mCubed, and if I really need one

Don't polish it. Metal polish has oils in it that fill in the micro grooves in the surface of the metal, preventing the TIM from getting in there and doing its job.

TIM is supposed to get into those cracks to fill them.

Bro... you make me wanna buy another LianLi case!!!

wait, so you did not chrome it? just removed paint and DIY'd it?
amazing results...

couldn't you have asked TC to sell you a non-painted one?

also, now that you've removed all paint and such, no need of any oxidation or adverse effects of it being nekkid?

thanks!

amazing build bro!

So you're about to sell your Fuzion later on?

Very nice build you got there to, I'd like to try WC my P182B but I'd rather buy a V1000 or V2000. Especially after seeing this build.
Unfortunately I'm still doing the school bench so I think I'll stay with my Antec, at least for now

@kinghong1970 Thanks man! Those are some good questions, and to be honest, I haven't thought about the adverse effects paint removal will have on the rad. Yes, I should have asked for a non-painted one, but I originally thought I would have an all black case, so I wanted a black rad. Judging by how easy the paint came off, I don't know how much it protected the rad to begin with. Should I worry about oxidation?

@Blundie Läget? Always nice to see a little more Norden flavor here.

To answer your question would be unfair to all the indespensible help I've recieved.

CPU+Gpu Blocks, fans, fittings, misc (http://www.petrastechshop.com/) - Top three Vendors I've dealt with. Could easily have bought everything from them, if they had it. Same day answers to almost every email.

Sleeving, cabling, molex, vandals + more (http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=index&zenid=2b41ce84c0d667e3e455a452d6c5c552) - Awesome selection of almost everything. Hank always answered my emails within 2 days. Don't know why ppl complain about their service.

GPU Block, rad grill + more (http://www.chilledpc.co.uk/shop/index.php?osCsid=38ecece885fc504df4a4ba37bf06453d) - Another vendor that takes it personal. Tom is very helpful and got back to me in the same timeframe as Hank. Plus he hooked me up on shipping several times.

GPU, CPU, hard drives (http://www.newegg.com/) -was in the states on vacation and got a bunch of stuff cheap. no int shipping sorry.

Got my Prelude from these guys (http://www.ncixus.com/vendors.php/3604/AuzenTech/) - but their whole customer service section left a sour taste in my mouth and I can't really recommend them. I just hope there's nothing wrong with the card as I haven't had a chance to test it. Others think they're good. No int shipping.

PA120.2 (http://www.over-clock.com/) - good service, lot's of personal advice from Marci himself.

Bitspower Fittings (http://www.bitspower.com.hk/catalog/index.php) -straight from HK baby! Lot's of personal service from the man himself, Vincent.

Looking at Aquaero (http://www.aqua-pcs.co.uk/aqua-computer-shop-1-c.asp) -trying to get an Aquaero from these guys, have been pretty fast with responses, and are very reasonable with shipping.

I've bought a bunch of small misc things from the big dealers in Sweden, komplett, datorbutiken osv, I think I got my chassi from db's. Service fast and efficient. Pricing is a little high considering moms, but hemmaplan eh?

That about covers everything. Oh, almost forgot, got my Tygon from Mcmasters, super cheap in comparison to here, but they dont ship int anymore. Change in policy. Sucks.

I may have dealt with some other websites, but the ones listed are the majors.

Usch, sorry everyone for the lack of updates, the project isn't dead.

I've spent 2 modding days trying to make an acylic cover for the DVD drive so I could stealth that in the front - to no success. I'll tell ya, I have new found respect for everyone that mods in acrylic, I found getting the piece to fit perfect was near impossible for me to do with a hand drill, dremel and a big file.

I'm leaving on a business trip to Asia next week, so I'm trying to get some more stuff done before I go. I'll post pics and text as to what I've been up to.

@disruptfam the LED's and resistors I picked up from a local electronic store called ELFA, which is where I've been getting most of my el supplies. However, with the dollar so low, I just ordered a mass quantity of LED's from frozencpu and shipping be damned! ;)

Hej Hej!

I had been hoping to get more done then the little that I did, but with the pressure at work and the ongaing trials of a 14mo old son who has not only learned to walk, but walk fast. Everything in the house needed to be moved above 53cm that was loose or any way fragile. This month has been lot's of 'Aj Aj Logan!' (kind of like saying 'no no' in english I guess).

Anyway, I'll start you off easy. I, once again did a mock up of the system (and I really should get around to taking pics when I do it), and decided that I perhaps had more room than I thought. Or more room to get myself in trouble

So I called up the good folks at thermochill, and spoke to the main man Steve, and asked if they could send me an unpainted 120.1 as I seemed to have found room in my case for one more rad.

He sent this:

Kind of plain. But I knew what it would look like later. This time around, I took some pics of the different sanding stages so that you could see the work involved.

Stage 1 - a little 320 grit

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans116.jpg

AS you can see, not a lot happening.

Stage 2 - 400 grit

Getting a little better.

Stage 3 and 4 : went up to 600, then 800

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans114.jpg

Stage 5 and 6: 1000 grit and then 1200 wet

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans113.jpg

Stage 7,8,9 (I combined all these last stages because the differences were minor and it's more dramtic to see end result) : Used Dremel Buff tool, then 2000 wet and then my metal polish of which you've seen the pics earlier of -

Ain't she a beáuty??

Usch,

Somethings I've learned is that balancing life work family and then hooby's always is more complicated than you think.

It's been a hectic time and I'm trying to get back in the swing of things when it comes to modding. I've learned something though (since this is my first mod) that I should never, never paint first before I have everything figured out. What a nightmare this has been. To top it off, I found a window design I absolutely loved and then went and had watercut (which I have the guys email at work, and as soon as I go back on monday I'm going to link his business, because of all the places that I found in Stockholm, this guy gave me the time to listen to what I wanted and was courteous and respectful, and charged me a price that I was more than happy to pay. A couple hundred crowns and little drive got me a perfect window. He's awesome and totally respects crazy modders. All 08's should email this guy.)

Anyway, what I discovered is that since I bought the 1000b+ model, it had a fricken cut-out in the panel which LL thought people would want. Well, I figured I could just swap the panels and be done with it. How wrong I was. That little mistake has cost me so much time and dremel work that I will never show you what the insides of my panels look like, you'll only see the outsides. I had to do a lot of cutting of rails, taking off rails and reapplying them with 2 step epoxy and so on that they're a mess. Nothing I can do at this point. I thought about starting over with the whole thing, but then was like 'meh'. Live and learn. I'm already thinking about the next one and looking to use this case as a big learning project.

So let's get on with some pics eh??

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans137.jpg

Updated my 8800GTS that I started this thread with to a 9800GTX (only to have bought it when it still cost 379USD, thankfully Tigerdirect was more than understanding and gave me the difference in credit when the prices fell through the floor)

This looks a little better:

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans131.jpg

Now I needed a new GPU block for this card (oh by the way, I'm thinking about the step up program and moving into the 280GTX unless someone can convince me otherwise. . .) and hands down the sexiest block on the planet has to be this (and of course it fits my black and silvver/chrome theme)

and he assured me that it's ok and not a problem. I don't know, it's my first full cover block and I didn't think that it should bend the card, but it does a little. But Eddy said it's no worries, what do you guys think?? I know that Charles H of Murderbox had a similar issue and he changed his out, I'm wondering if I should do the same.

chaotic life:

Decided to add a PA120.1 where the front fan sits, so I needed a base to rest that on (felt the weight was too much for the front fan brackets alone). Here's a little acrylic bending in process :

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans134.jpg

it'll look much better and you prolly won't see it when I'm done. It'll be just a U bracket for the PA to rest on.

Of course now to the door:

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans136.jpg

Have some nice dark acrylic behind it with some super sticky thin double sided tape I found at an art store.

Little pic to see how it looks through and through:

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans135.jpg
ignore my big foot :ROTF:

So I think that's it. I've picked up a BigNg and sensor bus, have a sweet spot to put them in (gonna utilize that window panel from the other door), and can't think of a single thing left to buy. In fact, when I'm done, I'll have WC parts for 2 more rigs as I have bought so many blocks, hose, fittings, everything that I just need to find a case now. LOL

Choke Ferm (http://www.fermprodukter.se/) - Super Nice guy, willing to help, they have a fyndhörna where you can buy all sorts of 'scrap' for nothing prices. I found almost a panel sized 4mm clear acrylic piece for 20kr here. Bought my shaded acrylic but that was cut to specs, 4mm boat window the darkest they had, still cheap!

Arvid Linden (http://www.uppvatt.com/) Another hero, listened to what I wanted and was wiling to help out for extremely reasonable prices (my door cost less then 300kr to cut). One of the only shops that spoke to me like a real customer and didn't just quote me 1000kr to blow me off. of which there were many 08 shops. But these guys are champs.

Since I feel like I'm winding down to the end of my mod (and the strong feeling that I'll be completing this soon, I mean, my god haven't I procrastinated enough?), I've been doing some small things to kill time. Must be the fear of failure in me that I need to find other projects instead of just completing the one that I have - lol.

Anyway, I had picked up some of these (http://petrastechshop.com/12yalod1whle.html) as a good way to add a little wiring to my case, and I figured, what the hell they're YATES! Right? In my mind, my concept originally started as a more BLING and less ZING, but as time has progressed, I've come away from that and want to be more low key.

But why the LED fans then? Well, what if I could turn it on and off? With a little help, I was able to make a simple LED fan mod that I figured I could share with those here: so here goes.

LED FAN mini guide

When you peel the sticker off of the Yates, you're left with this:

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/LedFan008.jpg

It's a circuit style LED fan which means that I have to connect the wiring together and then bring the power to an external switch that I can control. Here's the idea:

borrowed from Lost-Modder-thxs!
http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/fanwire-1.jpg

STEP 1

I began by cutting all the black wires as instructed that connected the LED's to the PCB board. The picture shows a wire cutter being used, but this was for illustrative purposes only; I ended up using an Art Razorblade Knife (or Exacto or whatever it's called) as the wirecutters would not fit into the small area's that were not covered by plastic.

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/LEDFan7.jpg (pic A)

STEP 2

After cutting all wires I began on the side just after the main connection area so that I would end there. I began by soldering the 2 ends together, and then using the smallest heatshrink that I had. A Heat Gun is highly recommended for this. I next coupled the middle of the wire to the next end, thus saving solder steps. To do that, I cut the rubber off with the razor exposing the bare wire (pic B). I then used a slightly larger heat shrink to safeguard this coupling and moved on to the next junction. Progress is shown in pic C. and pic D.

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/LEDFan4.jpg (pic D)

STEP 3

After completing all the LED's, I ran the wire down the fan channel by the main circuit area. I then connected a new ground wire to the main connection where the LED wire was earlier. I also ran this wire down the same channel. I used a very slim piece of electrical tape to hold the wires in place. I may substitute this for hot glue later. At this point, I connected the two black wires to a non-led rocker switch. With the wires connected, I turned on the fan via my PSU (also jumping the PSU by connecting a wire from the green connection to a black/grnd connection on the 24 wire molex). It worked and the LED's were off (pic E)! I then put the LED's on using the switch (pic F), and that worked as well! I then turned it off and on for the next few minutes while patting myself on the back. Very happy with the finish here.

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/LEDFan1.jpg (pic F)

STEP 4 - GO NINJA!

Here's my semi-lame attempt at hiding my work, and I may change this in the future with just black elect. tape, or whatever I may find. But for now, I think it looks good from outside the case, but if you were right up on the fan, you would notice that something wasn't quite right.

What I attempted to do was burn a groove in the plastic to tuck the wires in. The problem that arose was I was nervous about going to far and dripping plastic onto the circuit board. So I only went down about halfway which left the wire slightly on top of the cover. Also, my wiring itself had been a tad too short, so that the loop isn't perfect or a perfect circle, it pulls a little in.

After the groove was cut, I reapplied the sticker and that's what you see in the last picture (pic G). What's left to do is sleeve the exposed wires with black sleeving, and then decide where the switch will go.

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/LEDFan2.jpg (pic G)

I didn't take any pics of the rocker switch, but this is simple to do if anyone wants to see that. If there are other pic requests, just ask as I may do 1 more fan and can take more pics.

Again, thanks for the help, and I hope this mini guide helps you!

HiHi,

I've been busy with the build, so busy that I stopped taking work pictures and feel that you all may be more interested in a final pics instead. TOO BAD! Not today anyway. Here's a few work pics to show a little of what I've been up to, and hopefully final pics will be this week (or next week at the latest).

In no particular order:

the calamity of a busy workspace

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans126-1.jpg

wiring

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans128-1.jpg

more wiring

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans127-1.jpg

even more wiring

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans135-1.jpg

Evil-98 inspired mod (thanks for the advice btw!)

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans134-1.jpg

a small step in the lid

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans133-1.jpg

needed one of these (talk about expensive)

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans130-1.jpg

and a little glue

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans131-1.jpg

and we got this

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans132-2.jpg

but that wasn't until after I used this

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans129-1.jpg

so that's it. For now. You wouldn't believe how much time I've spent wiring, shortening and lengthening and sleeving and finally routing of wires.

Soon, it will all be done

like I said, the calamity. . . (note to self, never put heat gun in lap directly after use)

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/logansfar/logans137-1.jpg

the crappy sleeving which started the problem in the first place (problem = lost days to sleeving and wiring)

I sleeved so much, I broke my sunbeamtech pin remover tool and had to dremel me a new one outta a razorblade. . .

If you need more help, let me know, it was actually quite easier than I expected and my 'job' isn't perfect by any means (I was too scarred to create a deeper channel in the plastic with my soldering iron to hide the cables - I was afraid of going through the plastic :p: )

Yeah I know what you're saying too! When I started this build I thought it would take me 2 months tops, ROFl!
If it hasn't been obvious, I've never WC'd before, nor modded a case, so I'm learning everything as I go, and just trying my best, as well as sticking to the ideals.

I feel like I should be done soon as I can't think of anything more that needs to be done, other than trying to hide some cables on the mobo (since temp sensors from the BigNg will be visible), but that may not be feasible.

With my current workload, and then a business trip to Asia at the end of Oct., it may be 1 month more before final pics are posted.

Thanks for hanging in there and staying with the log, even though it's not the flashiest kit, nor the quickest build, but it's mine. ;)

Well you have to start somewhere. :D. I think it's better if you take a year to do it right than doing it in a day and messing up. I remember this one guy who posted his wc rig at OCN had done so many things wrong. He thought the outlet of his pump was the inlet [omg poor pump is toast due to pumping air], screwed into his feser rad, no clamps. . .yeah.

Well my little project was the first time I ever did anything by myself and the first time wc [my last kit was pretty much done my a mate]. It was so fun fun fun.

so, I have some development news. . .

I think I'm Done!!!! WOOT

Just got back from my business trip and took a free day because of 'jet lag' *cough cough* So I felt super motivated (read awake) and got hustling on my build. did some more wiring, some moar drilling, polished some acrylic, and then put in all the tubes.

Now I just need to fill, leak test for 24hrs, and then install Vista.

Then take some jaw dropping pics!

maybe I'll take a teaser tomorrow. . . :)

usch, small hitch.

During my leak testing, I saw that my BP G3/8 to 1/4 converter was slightly leaking from the connection to the PA120.2 That was a bummer as the tygon 3404 is so unbelievably stiff that there was really no way to tighten it without taking the tubes out.

Soooo, I had to drop the rad, replumb the lines, and as a precaution I added another O-ring to all the BP converters, I just felt that they were'nt sitting right/tight enough. Now I'm in hour 4 of leak testing and everything looks good.

Buut, another slight hiccup- and I don't know if I screwed the pooch or not on this one. During the re-plumbing I bent a capacitor outta place on the mobo (under the 24 pin connector), but not off the board. So very delicately I bent it back into place. I'm hoping that the connection is still good, but I won't know until I fire up the computer. Which by the way, has me sweating profusely as I feel I've come so far and would just break down and cry if I had to pull everything out to replace the mobo because of user error (read fack-up).

I guess now it's just wait and see as tomorrow or the next day I'll be flipping the switch and powering up this mutha! Pray for the best!

11-09-2008, 03:25 PM
LOLOLOLOLOLOL. I'm sure it will be fine buddy. I remember CD found a capacitor in his case and the board in question is still crunching and rock stable. I myself shorted out something around my pwm area as the Heatkiller thermal pad contained some metal flakes [I didn't check =p. There was a string of something metalic under the sticky paper.] and my board is fine without that mosfet ;).

Well, my system is up and running now :) , but man I have a ton of bubbles! I thin k it has to do with my mini mini micro-res. If you don't know what I'm talking about, go look at some of the pics (I think page five).

Anyway, I have tilted this damn thing, ran it with the cap off (on the res), ran it for 24hrs or more, but I just can't get the bubbles out.

Any suggestions?

BTW - pics coming Sunday. . .

I've been doing the tango so long with the case my wife is getting jealous :)

But seriously, I think the issue may be the water level + there seems to be a micro vortex happening in the res. I see the bubbles come in and then they spin around but never go over the separating plate before they get sucked back in the 'out' hose.

I'm thinking of lowering the water level so perhaps the bubbles just filter out when they hit a half empty res. . .

I learned alot along my journey as a first time modder/builder. I know now next time around that I'll be able to accomplish my builds in less time although half the fun was in the tinkering!
I'm quite pleased with the final results and my only regret would be the 'top end components' that I bought last year (when I started) are now obsolete

OMG!
I totally forgot about this, till I saw it on the first page today... went back re-read the entire thing... (ok, almost all of it)...

I'm in a relatively same boat,5am except I have FOUR kids, age 7, 5, 3, 2. And, I'm the one who stays home with them. Whenever I go into my office/workspace/store room/ get away from the family room, the baby (the two year old) go in and starts pushing every button he can reach, and some he can't....

I'm stuck trying to finish two computers with what little time I have at night, since I wake up at 5am.

I remember seeing this build awhile back, and I have to admit it inspired me to do more. Yesterday I took my first attempt at soldering 3 fans together for one fan header, and turned out pretty good. But, it was the only thing I had time to do. I plan on sleeving my PSU some night.

Anywho... It looks great. Your wife reaction is 'bout the same as mine... "yeah, so" hehe

darn nice work. Thanks for all the pics. I now feel like I can tackle a few things I would have never tired before....

Wow, I'm honored to be even mentioned like that, never in my wildest dreams would I have thought so (ok, maybe my wildest) :)

@everyone else -- A Big Thanks! Wonderful comments and much appreciated, I had hit a real low in this case. For a long time I kept encountering problem after problem and solutions were a long time coming. Plus it felt like I had lost interest in the project log it was hard to be positive and post updates when there really weren't many.

There are a slew of mods that I did that aren't documented in the log and the some of the best praise must be they go unnoticed. Which was my aim, for nothing to appear 'modded'.

I must point out one thing though, and I thought about posting a video about it , but the switch for the DVD player is the same Bulgin Black switch (with white LED) that you see on the front of the case. The DVD switch is located next to the pump, and when I showed my wife she again wasn't so thrilled 'I have to stick my finger under the case now to open the dvd?? was what she said. But she thought the LED blinking as Data was read was a nice touch :D

these bp fittings are good yeah ? :) i love mine it's a shame i can't use them on my fuzion though :(

I know its a bit late as its an old log, but if you use the Bitspower 45s you can use the compressions on the fuzion.

Nice sleeving job but to be honest it could be a little tidier.

it was a fuzion v1 adn I never could get anything on there, even with the 45's.

As far as tidyness goes, ya well, the space behind the mobo is absolutely minimal and as said, it was my very first water build and I did the best I could. You reach that breaking point of patience and as the build was approaching 1 year already, I couldn't spend anymore time than I had, especially since I made the mistake of buying all parts at the beginning (so that by the end they were outdated). There is a whole mess of wire management that I went into that isn't detailed in the log like that I re-wired every cable from the PSU so that they were the exact lengths needed and even so there was still the lack of space to hide stuff. I even bolted a bunch of cables into the midplate of which you can see the domeheads next to the res in some of the pictures.

oh well, I learned a lot from this build and I'm hoping to start a new one Q1 2010. We'll just see which direction I go and what the case becomes now as I originally planned on a G5 mod(and have two G5 cases waiting at home) but teh more I look at that case and this v1000, I think I want to go bigger so I have more room to play with. Staying small is hard!

I appreciate that there's still interest in this mod! Thanks for the comments.

LogAn'sRun, I really like that mirco mirco res you made. :) And the rest too, ofcourse.

EDIT: Sorry about bumping an old thread back up. This should have been a reply to this thread: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showpost.php?p=4411582&postcount=82
