I know it's FUD, but :

http://www.fudzilla.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=5447&Itemid=1

Considering the 2900 ref design didn't involve GDDR4 and that didn't stop the IHVs then, along with the market this card is targeted at, I think this story has some merit.

Also 500 posts. Yay. Only took nearly three years.

They probably will, but I would not bet on it being a significant difference that will sell many more units.

At least one (to me), i think it was to be expected since the single 3870 is DDR4. but i'd like to see a 2 GB DDR4 version of the X2 announced. I don't think it's an unrealistic suggestion... :)

If I was gonna get a X2. I'd want a GDDR4 version.

GDDR4 is not THAT significant of a help in the 3870 over the 3850, so I don't know how much it would help a x2.

GDDR4 3870X2's WILL be out and it won't be long until they are... ;)

Although, why should we step down?

http://www.shg.dk/link.asp?goto=infobox&varenr=2110590 they have it listed and approx release date is feb 6. id say 2300Mhz compared to the present 1800Mhz GDDR3.

Dont know, but I would think the cheaper ram should equate to a cheaper card. And if the performance hit is not that noticable, we all want cheaper cards. Everyone thinks Nvidia is the way for the extreme performance, so not like a cutting edge ATI board is going to change everyones mind. I meanI thought I saw that the x2 beats an ultra and costs less, but people still say the ultra is the top VC.

yea but what about timings. GDDR4 will have looser timing then GDDR3. Well 500MHZ should cover that:rolleyes:

I would take that with a grain of salt. The Swedish division of SHG lists the same card under "Ati launch" but with the description "DDR3" for memory.

how much better fps wise will the gddr4 version be over the gdd3 version i have 2 on order should i cancel them?

Monkeywoman

stick with the ddr3. the ddr4 versions will HIGHLY have the same pciexpress 1.0 bridge on it, the 2.0 bridge will allow for greater bandwidth(if they ever chose to use it). if there is any performance increase ID SAY 10fps.

You'd say 10FPS, eh? In what exactly? And how, may I ask, did you determine such a precise number?

you need all the bw you can get at high gpu clocks on 3870 from what i heard.
even at 12x10 res since the mem is 256bit the gpu starts to be mem starved at 1000+ gpu clocks.

the first thing for ati to fix is to enable ocing tho :p:
gddr 4wont change if we still wont be able to oc both gpus and mem clusters

GDDR4 or lack of is reason im going to Buy two His ICEQ3 3870XT instead of one His 3870X2

Unlikely to be getting a Second 3870X2 as cant afford it..

Both same price... no brainer!

I think GDDR4 will offer a lot on this card in some situations. Remember that this card basicly has a 256bit bus as most, if not all, data needs to be duplicated for both GPUs to work with. If ATI fixes the overclocking there will be more gains even, as so far the GDDR4 memory on HD3870s proves to be highly overclockable (I've seen as high as +-DDR2800).

GDDR4 should lower the power consumption of this multi-chippery abomination quite nicely.
(...) i'd like to see a 2 GB DDR4 version of the X2 announced. I don't think it's an unrealistic suggestion... :)The problem is the 1Gbit GDDR4 chips needed for 1GB (with 8 chips) don't exist.
Samsung and Hynix both offer GDDR4 with density upto only 512Mbit.
