so anyone have a detailed explanation on the best way to string up let's say 3 fans to one pin header? do you just take all 3 wires and crimp them in the header pin?(seems kind of tight) or do you splice the wires before the header? and how do you do it? butt splice? a drop of solder? etc?

i thought u take just one of the whites and solder them together :/

maybe the red one
im sure someone here knows

im not familiar with the max wattage output of the fan headers on the mobo, but i doubt the mobo fan headers can handle 3 fans

however, if you have another fan controller that can handle the wattage used by the 3 fans... heres a good way that i use personally:

* cut off the 3 pin connectors (female) from all 3 fans... give the 3 pin connectors some slack since we'll be using them later
* solder the 12v (usually red) and ground (usually black) from all 3 fans together... for now, leave the data/rpm line alone
* now, solder the combined 12v and ground lines to one of the 3 pin connectors... so far, you are done with powering the fans
* as for the data/rpm line... take 1 data/rpm line from 1 fan only (u can cut off the other 2) and solder this 1 line to the header that u used in the previous step
* now, you can plug the connector into a controller... the controller will controll the speed of all 3 fans and it will be reading the rpm from one of the fans... if you use 3 exact fans, then the rpm reading of 1 fan should be pretty close to the other 2

let me know if u have any questions

great, I just want to hook it up to the PSU just want to have less wires instead of a giant daisy chain.

I know I've seen a more detailed thread with pics step by step somewhere, if I find that one, I'll post it instead.

@jedda, ya, that was the one I was thinking about, but now all the pics are gone :( too bad, I hope they come back. He did a really nice guide on just that subject (I used it to do my fans ;) , too bad I'm going with a different color scheme and may be forced to change the sleeving doh!)

As for adding more than 2 high cfm/amp fans to a pin header on a mobo,it's not the greatest of ideas. I did it, and it turned out pretty bad. (they where really slow on my xbx2) When i need to hook up some fans what do is strip the wires with my teeth (or some pliers) (the red, black ones get connected together while one yellow wire is used to control speed and gets connected to the one on the 3wire pin header that connects directly to the mobo.) If you don't have a soldering iron/solder the thing to do is divide the metal fibers of one wire into two seperate strands. Do that with both wires you want to connect. Then wrap up, and seal with electrical tape. It's definitely not the most aesthetically apealing thing in the world, so sleeving/ good hiding would be good options. (it does form a very strong bond though that will usually brake the wire before it comes undone.

Capiche?

Well if you understand which wires you want to join there's a few pics of sleeving etc in Posts 97, 98 and 99 on page #4 in the link in my sig.
A pair of helping hands and a good solder station make it easy. Cheap irons make it hard. Use a wooden peg to hold back your sleeving and heat shrink while soldering.

Sorry I didn't see this thread sooner. I just made up two splitters last night for my build (link in sig) and I could have taken pictures of how I did them. :(

Anyway, all I did was take a handful of the 4-pin to 3-pin adapters that come with many 120mm fans these days and cut the 3-pin 'male' ends off. Then I took two 'female' ends from a couple extensions I bought for $.99 from Petra's. I cut them all with about 3" of wire still attached, stripped the ends and soldered them together - red to red, black to black. I eliminated the yellow leads since these will run off a rheobus. I used heat shrink tubing on each of the solder joints, then sleeved & 'shrinked them on the outside to make 'em look nice.

Hope this helps a little...

Three-way splitter handles the lower rad fans, and the two-way handles the uppers.
