I'm in the process of getting some external HD for archiving pictures and movies, I understand that the PS3's USB works on my most USB devices.
I also understand that PS3 also recognizes jpg and mp3 off your burn disc to transfer pictures (wallpapers) and mp3 for music to PS3 HD.

What I'm curious is:
PS3 = BluRay and DVD playe; now if I connect via USB an Extrnl HD with movies in it, would it recognize the various DVD files and play it as if Extrnl HD=DVD disc?

Should this question be in the Hardware Section BTW vs Console?

i would think it depends on the file format. if it's .avi probably not. it might work if they are .mpg though

I did some searching and didn't find much, but you can always connect your PS3 to your home network and access files that way.
