Meh, my PC is acting up again. Apologies for lack of MJ12 for the next few days. I cant seem to get it running stable with WCG (2 threads) and MJ12. Sometimes runs for hours then crashes, sometimes 5 mins. Need to get it stable with both!

And as dave is daily trying to rape the net, we're fine.

Two thumbs up for all of us, we're the nets worst nightmare. :D

Seem to have WCG and MJ12 running OK now, had to lower CPU usage on WCG.

Go go go 24/7 crunnnchhhhh :D

What's your ISP? I had the same letter just in different wording from Verizon not even a month after I got Fios. It went something like this:

3.7.1 You may not resell the Broadband Service, use it for high volume purposes, or exceed the bandwidth usage limitations that Verizon may establish from time to time for the Service.

Got my speed halved for a few weeks til I got sick of it and called them and gave em a mouthful :yepp:

Well, on a Danish company, of course, called TDC. But what's more complicated about this is, that we are a complex sharing a big line.
That's why it has taken them so long to figure it out.
To be honest, some of the other users had phoned the company and complained about their line being slow. ( cause of me, but they coudn't figure it out. :D )
But now i'm busted. :(

Well, anyways, as i said before, i'm moving, so I have to get another connection. And i'll be off for a while.

You guys are doing fine without me, and I'd say i've done a pretty big amount for the team.

But rest assure "i'll be back" :)

I can only download at 930k/s usually :( My line fails!

Im gonna move to a house right next door to a telephone exchange. I want one of the new 150mbit fibre sewer lines!

As for 'downloading', Giganews all the way ;)

What you need to consider is not just your pipe, you have to consider all the pipes between you and your destination.
Hong Kong for example has a bandwidth limited to 25Mbps, if you destination is overseas.
I could have got myself a 1000Mbps line, but it would be pretty pointless as anything overseas is limited to 25Mbps.

A chain is only as strong as the weakest link ;)

Mekoa
01-30-2008, 03:55 AM
Its European Giganews servers, sure the outbound EU pipes for my current ISP are in the several Gbit range. At the minute, I know for a fact that 24mbit on EU Giganews gets maxxed. 2.5mb/s all the way. Probably be able to go higher!

But yeah, you are right :)

I've also found something that will give a slight boost in points if your bandwidth usage is high enough, got to properly test it first before i can be sure ;)

Mekoa
01-30-2008, 05:07 AM
Pretty sure on my single machine, bandwidth down is always between 5500-7000kbit/s. Not bad for a 9mbit line I guess? Can only really do 100k an hour though :(

hixie
01-30-2008, 06:03 AM
Well actually i made a bit of a mistake on my post above, it's not if your bandwidth usage is high enough, it's if the number of workers you have is high enough.

I did check the domain buckets that were open tho. Lot of small ones, few middle east countries, tiny islands etc. Plus a few I couldnt even figure out lol.

Hey - I have a question for you regular MJ12 guys, how often does an ISP throttle your connection for 24/7 crawling? My dad's work computer is on the same connection as me (it's his connection, really) so it's rather important that I don't mess anything up. I've been a little scared to leave it on 100% for any extended period of time because of that. We're on charter .

Also, wanted to let you know that I have a brand-new GT (complete with voltage jumper so I don't kill it again :D )incoming tuesday or wednesday, so I'll finally be up and running. I'm sick of doing 50% on this laptop, but anything more overloads the harddrive :ROTF:

I do grab a lot of files from ah...friends :wasntme: if they happen to be on local servers then i can max my connection but only for about 30mins if it's a very very large file(s), if it's the usual 300MB files then it over in a couple minutes.
So my answer is no, i haven't really maxed my bandwidth of any extended periods of time.

If you really want to know that it feels like to have 100MB connection, then i have 3 machines running MJ-12 at full throttle and 2 of those machines are grabbing files, opening a webpage loads just as fast without those programs opened

So i'm defiantly not limited by my bandwidth, i'm limited by my machines.

As for areas to live, I probably really couldnt say. I dont know much about places other than Edinburgh and Livingston (born Edinburgh, lived through here most of my life).

Theres a college in Livingston which my dad lectures at, its not bad. Few semi OK areas here too.

Edinburgh has some really nice places to live, but are expensive. Most are close to 1 or more Universities too. Unsure about colleges.

90%+ of the HDDs I replace are white label Maxtors between 80-160GB. I have two here -- one dead now, other I don't put anything on that isn't disposable. There are firmware updates for some of them.

After running memtest for a few hours and checking the hd they both seem fine. I did some googling and this bsod sometimes comes up after sustained downloading over 1 Mbps for extended periods of time  First time for me in 3 months of MJ12 so hopefully it's a rare, one-off thing....

I use a Speedtouch DSL router (configured for Be* internet in the UK). Really need to get an 8 port switch and use it in bridged mode or something.

Hmm.. Ive actually got an 8 port switching hub. Might have to configure that tonight to use it in bridged mode.

As for graphics cards, ive got an X850 XT PE lying around somewhere, but the noise it makes is horrendous lol.

Similar OT, but true -- since I use a VoIP as my primary voice line I have to snooze MJ12 when the wife calls a friend. I figure there's no way she'll gab more than an hour as set it to that. An hour later she comes in complaining asking if I turned on some network game or such that messed up the phone... underestimated again. :slash: Now I snooze 3 hour blocks.

I'm not sure if I should be glad or sad that my wife doesn't know how to snooze it herself like Vaio's pup. :dog:
