Was talking with my nephew, who just got his PS3 for Christmas, and we were talking about Call of Duty 4 (he's got it for PS3 and me for PC) and I started thinking. With all this fanboy junk about PC "this" and Console "that", what would a PS3 Score in 3D Mark '06?

I know it's one of those questions where one could make the argument that "PS3 is not compatible with that benchmark" (for obvious reasons...).

But was just curious and throwing it out there. I know PS3 and 360 have some pretty powerful engines in them, but how does that stack up, purely technologically, to say, my 8800GT OC'd to 770/1840/900 w/ a q6600 OC'd to 3.8Ghz....

Thanks!

the PS3 processor doesn't do computations the same way a PC processor does. it has something to do with "in line" and "out of line" computations. anyway, an AMD sempron 2700 for example would out power the PS3 in such a benchmark. the reason games can run so well on consoles is that the game is optimized for exactly the hardware of the machine. if they optimized a game solely for ONE PC than every PC, Crysis, for example could easily run at 200 fps constant. they just don't, because it would be hard to develop, and infinitely useless.

That's pretty much what I figured as well, but without the exact technical backstory. Just one of those crazy thoughts I get in my head :)
Thanks!

the ps3 cpu from what i understood has a power pc core that does in order execution where the cpus we have do out of order execution. one executes instructions as they are issues while out of order does them in the most efficient order. i think the ps3 cpu also has floating point co processors on it, but im not really sure if thats true or what those would really do for a game.

Liner and non-linear cpu's can't be pinned against each other.

The PS3 GPU is said to be about as powerful as a 7900GT, so it would score about the same as a 7900GT...

Except for the part where it has 128bit ram. But yes it uses a G71 based card.

A CPU is just a piece of hardware made to execute code. Write the code optimized for a CPU to run it well, and it just won't work at all on another architecture.

05 would be a better bench to pick tbh..... and in that I reckon it's the rough equivelant of 8-9k. xbox prob 9ish
