I'm having some difficulty with my computer, I was refered to this site by majormav :-P.

Anyway, my specs are as follows

ABIT KX7-333 [r] mobo - but I don't run raid.. just 1 20 gig 7200 IDE drive.
AMD 2000XP +
GF4 ti4600
512 MB PC2700
Sound Blaster X-Gamer

I built the entire machine, with the Lian-Li PC65 case from coolerguys.com and installed the whole thing 3 days ago.. Once I got it up and turned on the computer.. It would start up, but would not send output to the monitor.. The monitor simply sat there. I somehow cured this problem.. still dont know how, but now the computer is up and going.. I'd like to know what kind of tweaks I can make in the bios to improve my gaming performance.. I'm not looking to bench high. just looking to play Counter-Strike more stable. I turned "Enhance AGP Performance" to enable.. and it would freeze in game every 5 minutes.. so I had to disable that in order to keep it from freezing.

I also changed the arp size to 128 MB from 64 and dont know if that made a difference.. but I want to know how I can go about cureing the problem with it skipping every few seconds in the game. I want a smooth running game, that I use to have on my other p4 1.9 gf3.

Also, OPP or MrI, If you could help me out and let me know how you guys fix the Refresh rate with the 29.40 drivers.. I'd appreciate it, And if you want to refer me to good drivers for this type of machine to run games, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Please tell me what I need to do, to get this baby running like a charm.

Thanks,
MrEman

Sounds strange. Sounds like you don't have the 4in1 drivers installed.
Whats your FSB, CPU clocked speed and temps? And OS?

Im running windows 2k.. I installed SP2 first.. and I have a 2000 XP + processor.. temperatures im not to sure.. I know it cant be that hot.. and my FSB is 166 I think :-\.. its just default I havnt tweaked it much..

Btw, thanks for helping me.. noone wants to help me :-(

If you want u can msg me on irc or aim just lemme know. ill keep replying to you on here

If your at default your at 133, did you install the 4in1s??

Make sure you have fast writes disabled in the bios. If it was enabled..disable it and renable Enhance AGP and give that a go.

Is your 512MB 1 stick or 2?? If its 2 make sure you have them in slots 1 and 3.

Make sure you are running enough voltage to the memory...2 sticks require more than 1.

What OS are you running?? Make sure you've updated the VIA 4 in 1's in WinXP. The new 4.40's are supposed to improve AGP performance.

Set your swapfile to 2.5 times your system ram.

Check your CD-Rom or whatever CD drive you use for your games...try disabling DMA...this straightened out the skipping for me a few times.

You didn't mention what FSB you're running. From 133 to about 175Mhz you can run Cas 2 and all timings maxed in bios.

try some of these things and let us know how you make out...Ohhh...try Rivatuner RC11...I believe you can fix the refresh rate from that program...you can getthat here www.guru3d.com.

Good luck my friend:)

With Win2000, install the 4.37 4 in 1's...the 4.05c AGP driver in that set is the best performer in 2000.

Well, what about the CD that came with the computer.. Btw im on my other computer right now so I can communicate with you guys while I do this. Should I just get the win2k reformated with fat.. then after I get 2k up.. install sp2 then install those 4 in 1 drivers you were talking about MrI and install the AGP thing, what about the INF update? Is there a different one then from the CD?

also, where are slots 1 and 3, they dont seem to be labled here.. or im just blind.

Ok, Randi, I switched the memory to the right spots.. now I'm in my bios .. looking at the DRAM clock and so forth.. the current FSB Frequency is 133 MHZ and the DRAM freq is 166 mhz... what should I do in this window?

MrEman

And also Randi, what order should I be installing things after I get 2k up and going... 4 in 1's first? or SP2 first.. I always heard SP2 FIRST.. dunno

thanks

Don't do anything here. You need to go to Soft Menu and change your FSB to 166. Depending on your ram, you may need to increase your vcore.

Change it to user define. You may also want to change the Ratio to: 5:2:1.

If your chip's not unlocked don't worry about it! You won't be able to change the multiplier. What kind of ram do you have?

MrEman
07-12-2002, 07:57 PM
2 sticks of 256 mb .. PC2700 333 mhz

Well should I just leave the multiplier factor as is?

and u didnt answer the stability thing.. will this make my computer freeze and :banana::banana::banana:.. updating the ratio? I have a aluminum.. pimped out fanned out case

You have no choice. If you change the mult, your computer will not boot!

Changing the ratio to 5:2:1 will relieve some stress when using a higher FSB. Sorry what brand of Ram do you have?

MrEman

Try small increments. (150, 155, 160+) Increasing your vcore when becoming unstable.

MrEman

whats the vcore? how do I get to that

Look on the left side and check out some of the guides.

Very Informative!

MrEman

ya but where is this vcore thing that u want me to update? where is it in my bios

JAWS

AMD CPUs: Increase the front side bus (FSB) speed a little at a time. AMD's CPUs can be altered so that changing the CPU Multiplier is possible (see Beginner's Guides for details). Note that you may have to decrease the multiplier if the CPU becomes unstable. Test for stability. Repeat until it becomes unstable.

For best performance, you want to find the highest FSB and CPU speed that will run your system without any problems.

If the computer won't boot, crashes, freezes up, pops up error messages or gives you the dreaded Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD), then it's unstable. Raise the voltage one notch at a time until it becomes stable again (check CPU load temps each time). For safety's sake, don't raise the CPU core voltage anymore than 10% to15% above default.

Vcore is found in Soft Menu!

No

Only increase if your system becomes unstable.

Honestly, just install the 4-1's (if you can after a clean install) and try to get your system to run at 166.

MrEman
07-12-2002, 09:04 PM
Well I just tryed to move my fsb to 166..c ant do it.. it wont boot.. I cant move that # up or else it doesnt boot.. dunno wtf goes on with it.. but now I have to reformat.. and I need to know the order in which I should be installing stuff...

Service Pack 2.. then 4 in 1? or 4 in 1 then sp2?

mackanz

I always does as this:

I always install the older needs first except for the DirectX, eg, the sp is older than the 4 in 1, therefore sp2, 4 in 1, DirectX 8.1, display drivers.
But thats me and that is always working for me.

The directx is VERY important to have installed before the display drivers.

Jere:)

Sorry I left last night but I do need my sleep:)

Before you install the software....get into the bios and on the right side menu...choose optomized defaults...then reboot.

Install Win2000, then the Highpoint drivers OFF the CD, SP2 , DX8.1, 4.37 4 in 1's and your 29.40 detonators in that order. Don't use the 4in 1's on the cd..the 4.37's are better performing in Win2000.Also.

Once you get the software installed....go back into the bios and set the DDR voltage to 2.6 or 2.7v in Softmenu lll. In order to use more FSB or high FSB...you need to drop the multiplier down...but this can only work if your CPU is unlocked.

Set all memory timings as I described in my first post..along with AGP. I'll add in the Dram clock/drive control section to set your memory by SPD. You can also try running the ram the same speed as the FSB by setting it at 133Mhz.

Let me know how you're doing...I'll come back and check mail, this thread or pm as time allows.:)

Thanks! learn something new everyday.

Are you supposed to defragment after installing each one, or is that just a myth?

MrIcee
07-13-2002, 08:29 AM
JWS:)

I never have have and all works fine. I do defragment that partition before shutting down each day as thats my benching partition. When you boot up next time to bench you know you have a clean, defragmented drive to start out with:)

What are the High Point drivers off the CD? I dont know what those are.. I also am not running Raid.. so I removed the Raid controller from the bios.

When installing the drivers and stuff in the order you said.. Will this optimize my game performance.. and make things run very smoothly? I want to be running a very very smooth and non-skipping game.

Thanks for all your help.. I'll be refering tons of people I know to this place.

MrIcee
07-13-2002, 09:58 AM
For best harddrive performance...plug into the Highpoint controller. You DO NOT have to run raid to use it....if you plug into it like a normal ide port...it functions as a normal ide port. So enable it in the bios, set your bootup option from HDD 0 to ATA133 RAID and boot into Windows...then install the Highpoint drivers off the CD. There are many benefits to using the Highpoint Controller, 1 being much better hard drive poerformance and # 2 being a higher tolerance to overclocking the FSB without corrupting your hard drive. So give this a try...it may help eliminate your game skipping....and don't forget checking your cd drive for DMA enabled.

The order of install is by importance of software. When everything is installed and configured properly your games should play perfectly.

Roger.

Well also, I dont know what your talking about.. I only have 1 HD.. should I be plugging it into the Yellow ID spot towards the bottom of the mobo? is that what your talking about?.. And then I noticed on the CD it had to Highpoint or whatever software.. it had one for raid.. and one 37H non raid or something.

Also, I should be enabling my 133 raid controlller? even if im not using raid? and what should my HD setting be on.. it had HDD-0 1 2 3 and 4.... thanks

Jere

MrEman

Also, which drivers should I be installing for the High point.. I noticed a HP 37 and a 37 [raid]

MrIcee
07-13-2002, 02:29 PM
Yes...plug into one of the yellow controllers. You can use just one HD on them...or 2. If you pay attention to my above post..I explained how to use the Highpoint to boot from. Enable ATA 133 Raid in your bios...and set it to boot from ATA 133 Raid...its simple. On your CD when it auto opens...one choice is the Highpoint Raid drivers and the other is an install of the Raid Managment software.Choose HPT 37X driver. Don't worry...it won't be running in raid...just running in normal IDE mode.

Randi:D

MrEman
07-13-2002, 02:32 PM
Much clearer :-) thanks alot,

Also, when I open the CD it had 2 HPT 37X one was the HPT 37X and the 37X [Raid].. then it had a Raid management.. which Raid am I installing?

MrIcee
07-13-2002, 02:45 PM
Please check your CD again...I have several KX7 CD's and it lists HPT 37X Driver and HPT 37X Raid administrator...install the driver.

When I install WIN 2k .. should I be hitting f6 to install 3rd party SCSI or RAID with this? or just going through normal.

Jere

MrEman
07-13-2002, 04:37 PM
Ok, well I put the IDE cable in the Yellow slot now.. IDE3.. and I enabled ATA 133 Raid controller.. Now when I boot up.. and goto bios it doesnt read a IDE PRIMARY.. just my CD rom drive on the IDE2.. then if I just let it boot it sits at some detecting screen for 5 seconds (seems long, tell me if this isnormal) and sais press <CTRL><H> to configure, and then it just finds the DRIVE there, and starts up.. asking me to boot to CD.. I goto win2k and try and start installing and it gives me a DISK I/O Error.

:-( I'm frustrated.

Thanks,
Jere

MrIcee

Hit F6 and when it asks for drivers for the additional SCSI device...put your HPT372 floppy(from the Abit package) in the floppy drive and hit S. Once it detects your drivers...it will ask again for additioal SCSI devices..hit enter to continue on with the install.
