Well, I've gotten bored of building air cooled PC's....
I'm gonna get wet this time, with watercooling. ;)
I call this,

Me, my Dad, and "The blank.box"

Several years ago, I became very interested in computers. It started with the software, learning how Windows XP worked, what "CRTL+ALT+DELETE" really meant and discovering the Control Panel; I soon became the I.T. guy around the house (at least, when Dad was at work). . . But I had never really thought about what was really inside that rectangular box, the one that made noise beneath the computer desk. Some say, "curiosity killed the cat", but in this case (pun intended), "curiosity became a world of fun". . . And that, my friends, is where my obsession with Computers really had started.

Going back a few years (well, more than a few), my dad has been around since the Timex Sinclaria 1000 (http://oldcomputers.net/ts1000.html), and ever since fiddling with that computer (and plenty more after that) he also became quite interested in computers, and eventually built a few for himself, friends and family.
He also browsed computer forums such as these, and soon discovered. . .(drum roll please). . . Watercooling.
He built his first watercooled system when I was about 9 years old, of course I new nothing about it all, just that it was a computer for us, and it worked like a dream.
Four years later in summer '07, he built a new watercooled system and I was able to help him do it all, which was quite an experience for me. . . and also led to my addiction with watercooling. :D

My Dad is also a "fix-it" kind of guy, if you had something needing fixing, 9 out of 10 times, he could fix it.
I grew up working in the shop (aka, garage filled with tools. . .), and at a very young age started building things, messing with electrical, going out on jobs with my Dad. . . Boy those were some of the best times of my life. The knowledge I have gained through learning from my Dad all these years in the shop, I must say, has definitely paid off. As now I'm working in the shop more than my Dad does. . . and having access to the shop just about 24/7 gives me great opportunity to mod things, such as Computers.

So here I am, 16 years old, and still kickin' it with Computers. . . more specifically, "The blank.box".
I hope you enjoy watching this build come together, just as much as I am enjoying putting it together.

Ok, so I'm going to put the MCR320 up on the top panel of the case (still inside of the case though). But doing that won't allow me to put my power supply up there...
So heres the first mod:
http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/8295/cimg4301fv5.jpg
I took out the 3.5" bays, I had to drill out the rivets to do that.
I'm going to put the PSU down in the front of the case, I'll have to mod a couple more things though :)

I'm waiting for the rad, grills and the fans to come. More updates soon!

What about mounting the 360 radiator on the bottom underneath the case and put casters on there to elevate it?

hmmmm nice plans, but the cpu is a little old ;)

I know it's a old, my goal is to leave room to upgrade to an E6850 or something once the prices drop when the penryn come out.

What about mounting the 360 radiator on the bottom underneath the case and put casters on there to elevate it?

I thought of that, but I don't really want to elevate the case up to much.

I should be getting my rad today, I'll post pictures later :)

Looks like it's going to be an awesome build!

RAM: It's gotta be Crucial Ballistix. This is top shelf stuff and used to cost a premium, but recent price drops have made it so cheap, it's pretty much theft: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820146565

PSU: Corsair 620W. Excellent reputation, simply cannot beat it. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139002&Tpk=corsair%2b620W

IMO, the DD barbs are the absolute worst. I recommend the D-Tek barbs, those things are beauties to behold: http://www.petrastechshop.com/dhifig1th3od.html Much ligher quality than the DD's.

Get the E4400, more cache = better performance.

I'm not sure if you read my post above yours, but I'm going to get the E2140 and then when the penryn come out and the prices drop on the C2D's I'll get a better proc.
Thanks Nate!

I agree with Nate P.

And the D-Tek barbs are very nice, don't have ridges on em but hold just as well.

Why not go for something fancier like a Lian Li eh? :)

12-28-07
Apparently I won't be getting my rad or fans untill the 1st or 2nd of Jan.
So I'll update with pics of the rad when it gets here :)

But for now, heres a pic of some dremel work I did tonight:

http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/7770/cimg4321mo6.jpg
I'll be getting some of that rubber edging stuff from petra's soon to put around those sharp edge's.

It will be a while till I order some more components (gotta make some more $$), but I'll post pics and update ya'll whenever I do something new :)
Thanks for all the support guys

don't forget safety gear when cutting.

It took me about an hour or so to cut out those three holes too.
Don't worry, I had my glasses on ;)

Heres some links to pics of the shop (I linked them because there's so many ;)):

To the right is a wall of shelfs with jigsaws sanders... all kinds of great power tools :D

http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/197/cimg4333yd1.jpg
And to the left of those shelfs is what we call the electrical bench... for working on wires soldering heat-shrinking ect...
Oh, and notice the huge air compressor in the corner ;) it's huge... taller than I am

Theres the dremel I used last night to cut the lines in the holes and soften the sharp edges.

http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/8110/cimg4341ba0.jpg
Heres one of my favorite tools... the big daddy   J/K!

http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/886/cimg4343dd9.jpg
This is what I use to shrink the heatshrink onto things... gets very hot

http://img182.imageshack.us/img182/8075/cimg4342tu4.jpg
Heres the wall of screws, nuts, bolts ect...

http://img172.imageshack.us/img172/7884/cimg4344pv2.jpg
And lastly heres one of his bigger cabinets which has all the spray paint ever made in it... or at least I think so, theres alot at least ;)

BTW, All of the different tables and cabinets in the shop that you see in the pictures where built by my dad over the 12 years we've lived here. It was cool to grow up learning how to use all of the tools and watching him build things, it's one of his hobby's and has become one of mine too :D

Alright that's enough pics of the shop, this thread is for my wc project lol....
I'm going to be cutting some more things on the case later, so I'll update you then :D
Thanks!

Are those fans gonna fit? It looks like the mounting on those thigns are meant for 120mm fans but yours are 130mm and protrude out a bit more. I know on my MCR320 the fan spacing is really tight, with my PA120.3 you have alil more space between each fan.

BTW if you are going to be doing larger cuts use a jigsaw with a blade for light metals, works straighter and faster than a Dremel and doesn't waste cutting disks.

Alright, as promised heres another UPDATE!!!!!!!
01-03-08

Since those fans won't fit close enough to line up with the holes on the rad (and I knew they wouldn't) I had to mod them.
http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/3394/cimg4434ik3.jpg
I screwed one of the new fans to an old square fan.

http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/1083/cimg4435rg5.jpg
So now I have to sand it down until both fans are level with each other.

http://img125.imageshack.us/img125/6316/cimg4436st3.jpg
I used 80 grid.

http://img125.imageshack.us/img125/7184/cimg4438kh5.jpg
There we go :D

http://img125.imageshack.us/img125/7921/cimg4439id9.jpg
I sanded down the sides that I needed to on all the fans.

http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/4403/cimg4440nf8.jpg
Heres one up close.

http://img503.imageshack.us/img503/5499/cimg4444pf5.jpg
Mounted them on the rad, they look pretty good!

http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/7947/cimg4448yn2.jpg
The under side of the rad with the fans on.

http://img122.imageshack.us/img122/1684/cimg4450bc7.jpg
I'm doing push and pull. I tested the fans out while they were on the rad and it pulls air through likes nuts! It's super quiet too, I can feel air coming out 10" away from the rad when the fans are on.
Now I've just got to do a little wiring and soldering on the fan wires.

Tomorrow I'm going to be doing some more cutting.
I should be getting the rad grills in the morning.
I also plan on cutting a window into that ugly ol' side panel ;):
http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/682/cimg4410oh9.jpg
Yuk.

http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/1737/cimg4411yu8.jpg
Put some blue tape on the front.

http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/8691/cimg4412hz3.jpg
And a little on the back.

Well, it's late and I'm tired, I'll UPDATE ya'll tomorrow.

Tt130mm fans, are they really that silent?

nice work area you have. i always prefer building from scratch some cabinets. this would allow me to fashion what i have in mind into reality (although not professional quality)

unfortunately living in a building has its price, space is premium, etc...
the wife and kids factor into this also...

Tt130mm fans, are they really that silent?

They make a low hum when they are at max rpm, but once there inside a case you can't really hear them unless you put your ear up closer.
They move a ton of air though and I like the color :)

Thanks! I like to build things too rather than buying them. Although, I don't think I would have the time to build a case from scratch ...

Yes it does, We live in a small home close to a nice lake, I have to share a room with my 6 year old brother (BTW i'm 14). My 12 year old sister gets her own .
That shop that you see in the pictures is our garage, we park the cars in front. The biggest draw back in our house is that I've got to share that room, I wish I could change that... maybe knock out a wall or two? Oh wait, were renting I can't do that.;)
Lol anyway, Yes living in a building definitely has it's price.

I'm going to start cutting things once everyone over here is up (I don't want to wake them up with the sound of blade+steel, they won't like that ;)).
And I should be getting my rad grillz today,

You'd probably be better off with just painting the blade of a yate loon orange.

FYI, the reason it probably feels like there's a lot of air coming through the rad is that the fans will draw in air from the openings on the sides and just push that rather than working to pull it through the rad. Path of least resistance and all.

I'd either seal up the vents on the edges of the fans or find closed fans to pull as that way they will only draw air from the rad rather than the air around them.

Hey smee! Like the good people have said before me! - those fans looks really awsome on the rad. This was a great idea you came up with!

I wish that I was that creative with idea's! - sometimes concerning my own build!

And btw! - yeah! living in a rental apartment can be difficult with workspace sometimes - I'm trying
to save up money to buy me a house again - I miss my workshed.

But all the extra money slip through my hands into the pockets of computer hardware retailers
or auto-tuning shops. :ROTF:

:ROTF:

I'll follow your build and progress with great interest from now on mate!

Edit: I have to restrain myself of buying more fans!

Lol vargher  Thanks m8!
Your all so encouraging :D

Yesterday I woke up with a cold so I wasn't able to get much done.
I started cutting the window out of the side panel and I also got my radgrillz.
I've still got the cold *sniff* but I'll take some pictures and post them *caugh* in a while.
Thanks!

Another UPDATE :D

I've done alot of things in the past 48 hours, But I'll start with some wire management :)

I did some soldering on the rad fan wiring:
http://img184.imageshack.us/img184/2755/cimg4455ns3.jpg
(yes, very messy table)

http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/7249/cimg4489vi7.jpg
I tested them and they all work great :D
Now I don't have 6 nasty wires hangin' around on the rad :ROTF:

Heres the rad grillz I got yesterday:
http://img147.imageshack.us/img147/9606/cimg4463sc5.jpg

http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/846/cimg4464wd7.jpg
Outta da box... they look sweet ;)

Here's what I did with the small grill:
http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/7691/cimg4465vp5.jpg

http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/2315/cimg4466eo8.jpg

http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/7261/cimg4467rk7.jpg
Cut out a squarish circle in the black thing that use to have the power button in it.

http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/9913/cimg4468hm9.jpg
Put it together

http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/8338/cimg4472so9.jpg
Put it on the front plastic piece.
BTW, I put a longer wire on this fan because it needs to reach behind the mobo.

Wow, looks very nice! Do ya have any tips for sleeving wires? I was having a hell of a time.

It's pretty easy, really. You first take off the connector (if any) at the end of the wire, then cut the sleeving to the length you want. Put it on the wire, cut about 1in of heatshrink for both ends of the wire(s), put one heatshrink on one end of the wire (covering a half an inch of the wire(s) and half an inch on the sleeve) and the other heatshrink on the other end.
Then get a blow dryer and turn the blow dryer on hot and blow on the heatshrink untill it shrinks :D
and voila, you have a beautifully sleeved wire :D

More mods!!

I finished cutting out the side window, I did it with my good ol' dremel and some reinforced cutting disc's.
http://img413.imageshack.us/img413/1024/cimg4479pv4.jpg
It took a while, but was well worth it :D

http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/5741/cimg4478lt2.jpg
Fits very nicely, now I just have to go get some plexiglass.
And, BTW, the rad is not mounted on the bottom of the case, it's just sitting there for now.

Next mod:
The other day my mom and I went to Target... I was looking through the isles when I came across these:
http://img413.imageshack.us/img413/2302/cimg4498vs3.jpg
And I thought, oh, I could use those!
They cost like 7 bucks each, I bought them :D

This morning, I cut one of them up a little,
http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/8646/cimg4500fv8.jpg
I cut a little piece out...

http://img242.imageshack.us/img242/8435/cimg4501uo7.jpg
Then I folded the edges over and fit it to size. Then screwed it on the case.

http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/8664/cimg4503so3.jpg
Close up

http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/5282/cimg4502mr9.jpg
Full picture.

Now i've just got to cut the top of the case and mount the rad to the case and rad grill.
http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/2732/cimg4495vb5.jpg

I might do that tonight, not sure yet.
I'm still not feeling so well... *sigh*..... *cough*.... *sniff*.... etc :(

Tell me how you like it all, comments and ideas are welcome! :D

It's not perfect, but it will be fine once I get some rubber edging and some plexi on it.

Theres a store called Tap Plastics down the street that I'll go to, they've got like ever kind of plastic you'd ever need and ever want to see, and they can cut it right there for you.

Oh you did your cuts already lol, I was going to suggest for rounded corners what I did with my external box was use hole saws then I used a 2x4 which I held in place with a clamp on the steel as a straight edge guide for the jigsaw and for steel use alot of cutting lubricant. Most cases don't use that thick steel and are usually mild My hot rolled 16gauge was a B*tch to cut. Awesome Idea with the silent wheels, so the actual blades are still within the 120mm I see.

Well Nate..... I've been doing a lot of research, and I think I'm going to go with the P5K-E. The reason is because unlike most boards, you can save bios profiles.
The other option was the Blood Iron, but you can't save bios profiles on that one.

There are other benefits of the P5K-E too... it has mosfet blocks already on it etc...

Really nice . That orange/black colour scheme is growing on me :D.

If I may offer a couple of suggestions:

To improve airflow/reduce noise from the rear fan, you may consider removing the standard case grill at the back and replace it with a standard fan grill.

You could also colour the screw heads black with a permanent black marker pen.

Looking forward to future updates.

Alright guys, change in plan!! :D
So, over on another forum a couple guys suggested I have a nice color scheme, Orange and Black. Another guy suggested I should name the build "Sunkist", I think that would fit very nicely, even though it's an Orangy color scheme not Yellow I think it'll be fine.
I'm going to paint the outside of the case a semi-glossy black, the insides will be both black and orange (different parts will be different colors).
I may even do some orange pin-striping on the outside of the case... :yepp:

So, change in main components:

I've decided to grab the DFI LanParty Dark P35-T2RS (http://www.motherboardpro.com/DFI-LanParty-Dark-P35-T2R-Socket-775-Motherboard-p-428.html) motherboard instead of the ASUS P5K-E/Wifi. The DFI board will match the color scheme way better and will look cooler.
Heres a pic:

http://www.motherboardpro.com/images/D/DK%20P35-T2R.jpg

Also, I've decided to get a Corsair XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 800Mhz (Cas4) (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145177) kit instead of the Crucial Ballistix kit. Reason being is that it again matches the color scheme better and because it has better cooling. I'll also eventually be getting a second kit to have 4GB of RAM.
Heres a pic of the RAM:

I used the big ones on the actual radiator and fans, the little ones I used to mount the rad grills to the case (I used some nuts too).

That does sound like a good idea, but I'm not sure the res will fit, the HD's are going right behind the front fan (on top of the PSU)....

Ok guys, looks like I'll be ordering the mobo, memory, HD(s) and the dvd drive tonight!!!! w0000000000Tttt!!!!!! :woot: :woot: :woot:

But heres the dilemma... i can't decide on the HD I want to get!! :ROTF:
I'm a hard core Seagate fan, I don't buy any other drives unless there given to me for free
I can get the new Seagate 250GB Sata HD with 32MB Cache (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148309) for $$80 + $6 shipping from Newegg.
Or...
The Seagate 320GB Sata HD (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148140) for $80 shipped for Newegg.
Or...
The Seagate 250GB Sata HD (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148262) for $70 shipped from Newegg.

I'm not doing any special RAID or anything, it's just simply one OS on each HD.

QUESTION!:
Will I see a noticeable difference in speed with a 250GB 32MB Cache drive vs. a 250GB 16MB Cache drive?

Which drive should I get?

smee, look for the WD3200AAKS-00B3A0 because it's a single 320 Gb platter with better performances. Seagate seems to be sliding on the quality department in my opinion.

well, a shot of it cleared my nose up, cause I am all kinds of congested from a cold.

Thats the highlight.

Seriously though, the QX6700s are hot chips, I get 50-52c @3.6ghz under full load (Lapped well) water cooled, with 2 8800s GTS and the NB in the same loop using a PA120.3 and three San Aces. Ambient temp is 68-70f

I am re-doing my loop here soon so I should get a decent temp drop. Will have the CPU and NB/SB in one loop and GPUs in their own loop.

I decided to go with the dominators instead of the crucial because they are more reliable and because they have better cooling.
The total cost of that order was $512.84 shipped, + theres $90 in MIR's!!
MIR's FTW!!! :woot: :woot: :woot:

Smee,

For a lad thats 14 im dam impressed with your modding skills and posting. I though you were the tipical old fart to begin with.

Amazing work so far dude, do not stop. I'd personly come there from the Uk and kick you till it's done!

Yup, I came home from from a class and they were sitting on my desk stacked neatly with a note that said "Just 4 U. Dad" and a big smiley face written on there... :p:
I love me daddio... :D

Thank ya old man a lot more, go get him his beer when he is home as you have the new firmwerar revision on the HD which has the working 32MB catch. Send me the part number i can check for you to make full sure but the 4 of them i had all were non working 32mb catches!

Nice deal on the CPU, just carefull showing photo of it with all the codes on there. Intel can trace it and do and will kick the ass of whom got it 1st.

Nice one on ya mate sorting you out and everything.

What else you needing then dude? I'm sure i probs got some junk (to me) here you might like to use in the rig and i'd be more than willing to send you it all the way to the USA.

Alrighty guys, so this weekends been real busy, haven't been able to do much.... played some games though! And Sunday was my 15th Bday :D

Anyways, as far as BSOD's, I've firgure it out thanks to all the helpful people in and around this community.

I've got XP running and I think I'll stick with XP for now.
But I know vista will work, just need to install a certain SATA/RAID Driver and such that I didn't install before (hence the BSOD's).
So, i've been playing games over the weekend and I absolutely love the graphics the GT gives me!!! :D
I also got to some OC'ing of the card, it's stable at 700/1717/1003 atm.
I also scored 13k in 3DMark06 (I'll get a pic of that later on ).

I'm about to take everything apart and see how it all fits in the case, so I'm going to venture out into the shop for a little while.... ;)

But as far as I know.... I love this build!!!! :D

Any updates?

Sorry for not giving ya'll any updates for a while, I've just remembered that theres life out there...... outside of my room (with all the computers :p:)....... lol, well I've just been busy with life the past couple weeks, just got back from an awesome boy scout campout.... We set up our tents in the rain, in the dark, with the mud and not a spark (for the fire).
But the rest of the weekend was nice and sunny, so it was an awesome campout. I'm a Life scout BTW

So anyways, my computers been disassembled and I'm working on making a PSU mount for up front in the case. No pics as of yet.
Also working on HD mount, and a couple other little things in the case.
I am saving some money for the watercooling gear, i've decided to only watercool the CPU and NB, I'll have to look at aftermarket air coolers for the GPU. Any suggestions?

BTW, I cannot get Vista to work as of yet, I can install all the drivers for the GPU and mobo, but when I try to do Windows Update it BSOD's. Every time.
So, I'm going to try flashing the BIOS to 1503 (it's currently 1203, yes way old.)
But I'm using XP SP2 just fine and may just stick with it.

Thanks for the patience and support you have all given!!
It's all coming along, slowly, but thats how I like to do things like this, so I can make sure it's perfectly how I like it. :D

Edit:

smee, I'm quite impressed by your skill/age ratio:yepp: I really like this project of yours, and the color theme is awesome! I hope we see the black/orange mobo on your setup soon. And those fans? Great! But why you decided to watercool only CPU and NB? I'd go for CPU & GPU loop, and some aircooling for the NB & SB if necessary. I see no reason for some low-flow NB block:shrug:

I might make a worklog of my next chassis project here soon too. Keep it coming lads!

Ahh thank you! But I have to say, it's all because of my dad teaching me these skills as I grew up. And I love working in the shop!! :D

As for the orange mobo, a user here pointed out that it's got only 4-Phase PWM's. Since I have a quad, I need an 8-phase or 12-phase PWM board.
4-Phase won't feed my quad a healthy voltage...
The Striker Extreme board I've got has 8-Phase PWM on it.

So for the future it looks like either an X38 or X48 board for me, but thats in the future more as I have to save money for other things... life. :p:

As for watercooling.... I'm really tempted to add the GPU to the loop also, but I'm just concerned about temps. I want to overclock this quad to it's max, goal is 4Ghz (which may or may not happen), it's an ES processor which means it's got an unlocked multiplier.
But I will try things first, who knows, maybe I can get the GPU on in the loop along with the CPU and NB.
I'm just hesitant to run the NB on air..... it's just..... un-xtreme not to! :D (I've already got the NB block anyways...)

I might make a worklog of my next chassis project here soon too. Keep it coming lads!

Do it do it!!!! Looking forward to the log!!! :D:D:D:D

dammit sorry smee i didnt catch you earily enough.

Avoid the tracers unless you have backups. No one cared to tell you this, but the failure rate on the tracers and ballastix is worse then the DDC-2.
I think its because of that crappy heat spreader which lifts and sometimes doesnt touch the ram.

Anyhow i went though 4 pairs, the last set i have my 4th pair i only use for benching. After that i pull it out and i use reapers or these new patriot 4gb sets i got.

Stick with the XMS from corsairs. I have yet to lose a pair of corsair ram.

With that out of the way...

Been following this thread for a little while, not bad for a first build, mate.

I could argue with you over your choice of rad, cpu waterblock, gpu waterblock, case, fittings, and I would tell you to get a different motherboard, but heck, you got it free.

I have one question though, why the hell did you get a new card? you were already given a perfectly fine radeon for FREE.

Oh, by the way, you make that big rad there look even bigger in that small case, heh.
