All stories eventually come true

By INQUIRER staff: Wednesday, 26 December 2007, 8:40 AM

DESPITE A COY attempt at a denial in the run up to Yuletide, Japanese giants Matsu$hita, Canon and Hitachi have, after all, struck an alliance in the LCD market.

The firms said yesterday they will work together to establish a consortium, with Hitachi divesting shares in its display business and divvying them out between Canon and Matsu$hita, which trades as Panasonic.

Samsung already has a joint venture with Sony, while Sharp and Toshiba said last week they are cosying together.

If there was a rash of further “cooperation” in the face of an increasingly hectic LCD monitor and LCD TV matter, no one would be shocked. Or even surprised. µ

so basically they're trying to form a cartel..
or else split R&D

the latter I don't mind, the former I do.

if they do both though chances are we'de roughly break even

Speaking of which, you can get Samsung DLP's now with LED backlighting and guess what? They don't really cost that much more than before...

Why can't we get a 22" 1920x1200 LED lit PC LCD? VA or IPS based...

Matsu$hita

I don't know what's your/the inq's problem with Matsushi-ta/Panasonic, they
have well-made products (most of the time; much higher quality than other
mainstream brands, though). In computer monitor LCD panels, they are a
much smaller player altogether than either of Samsung, Chi Mei or AU.

Oh sorry, now i get it... stupid wordfilter

the samsung DLP's you mentioned are tv's...

with computer moitors led backlights are still soemthing reserved for the very high end monitors.

VA or IPS based? well.. lets put it that way, death to TN

The DPi @ 1920x1200 on a 22" would be too small to read text without a big disconfort.
Even @ 24" 1920x1200 is a big resolution for the screen estate when moving from a 19" 1280x1024 LCD where you can read much easier, atleast it was for me and I tend to think that I don't have any problems with my eyes...
1920X1200 is very good for 26 maximum 27" PC LCD.
There is one VA* based 22" fron Nec or Eizo if I remember corectly but 22" is considered as a diagonal aimed @ a budget consumer that's why it is filled with TN's.

I can't say death to TN,there are some areas where a TN kicks a VA/IPS based LCD anytime like Gaming/Price but there are other areas where it fails miserably like viewing angles and colour gradients anyway it depends alot on the model of LCD since there are some bad S-PVA monitors on the market now, same goes for TN.

SED Please, I miss the fake AA from CRT's and of course, 100 Hz refresh for 100 FPS games and no interpolate resolutions... ;)

Congrats, you've pretty much summed up the entire desktop computer monitor market. S-PVA is ok sometimes, but shoddier examples of it and too much TN and MVA garbage has been coming out of the woodworks disrupting the whole 'progress' thing that had been going on with LCDs.

I'm sick of all these people raving about how more advanced TVs are, but excuse me!!? Their pixels are the size of my fingernails and 1080p is nothing to brag about in anything bigger than 19 inches. That is the trade computer monitors make, and have always made, a trade in image quality for higher resolutions.

1920x1200 is offered on 17" laptops. 1680x1050 on 15.4". I wouldn't say 1920x1200 is too small for 22" ;)

Yeah, but those are a pain to read, or look crap when you reset dpi in xp. :p
I heard vista handles it better, though

S-PVA is ok sometimes

if you don't care about color shifting yeah, sometimes..
