what did you do to prevent the heatsink from crushing the core ?

how did you go about taking of the HSI ?

Lol good question, which of the many methods did you use, and what problems occured.

And yer it would be hard to not crack the core with the HS.

How much temp difference is there?
looks sexy naked :pimp:

FINALLY proof that Intel has made a True-MCM-Quadcore CPU!!!!

I don't see much difference in temperatures, probably because of a bad mount :(
I used electrical tape to cover the smd chips and put extra layers in the corners. I'm running TRUE120 with 2x fans right now, the core is steal hard :D
I used denny's method from this thread http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=81209&highlight=ihs
I just can't believe I risked a chip like this, I'm crazy.
Edit: FYI, I had to lap the cores since one was higher than the other!

you LAPPED the CORES! wow.. brave soul.

So, was it worth it? Can you get any more mhz out of it now?

We'll see once I get my wc parts, I'm waiting for the d-tek fuzion from petra's. I don't want to risk this cpu right now (remounting, or maybe :D), I will leave as it is.
Actually I'm seeing 2C difference with the current mount.

This is a similar statement to:

"I had to cut my arm off with my pocketknife, since it was stuck under the boulder."

You are a king among men.

Wow, this is cool. Hmm, what improvement/gains does it bring? I wouldn't do it if it's a mere 2C reduction in temp :D

Thanks all, I hope I will regain some respect here :D  I don't like my Q6600 really much, It runs to hot, I wish I could get a different stepping. I'm surprised that this cpu is still working, I was heating this thing with a lighter for an hour since I couldn't get the ihs to come off. At last I took a screwdriver and popped this baby out. I will try to remount now, It's 2am over here, if I see any improvement, I'll crack my window and bench spi.

I hope things would be ok and please do share with us the gains of a naked Q6600 :D

Btw, what's the purpose of IHS in the first place?

Well, the contact was perfect, but not enough pressure:

One more shot of this sexy cpu :D :

I did the remount and now I getting higher temps. that I used to get 20min ago :shakes: .
Man, I cant wait for my cpu block, I got everything ready here, just need that block.

No problem, I am sure you can send it back and tell them you think your chip is defective since no IHS or anything. :D

You need to remove the latch mechanism for ideal contact. I did this sometime ago with a QX6700 (I may have been the first actually...) and I found I got "passable" temps with the hold-down still intact, but once I removed it (possible to do just by bending it a little so it can be put back on) contact was much better. The arm can be left on depending on the heatsink you're using, but the hold down has to go.

It's already off.

I lapped my Conroe and it gives me a better temps and that's about it. If removing the IHS gives me -10C, why not :D

brave man my friend. Your hardxor when u lap ya cores lol.

may i ask why your TRUE has blue paint or tape on one side?

and does that pwm hooby doob work on the dfi

haha loving how you 'popped' the IHS off with a screw driver. You, my friend, have balls!

That's blue masking tape to prevent air bleeding when you use push & pull configuration. You mean transpiper? This thing shaves off 3C from PWN area.

Congratulations  :cheer:

I tried it w/ one of my 1st q6600s and the cores were significantly tilted relative to each other. When I tried to lap em to even them out, :explode2: :upset:, so I'm leaving their hats on these days.

And I'm not going back to a phenom just to get a single core

Wow, it's been a long time since I saw a NAKED CHIP!!

Oh, wait, it's also doing a lap dance!!!

He already removed the latch as stated earlier in the thread.

And I must re-iterate how awesome that is. I mean a screw-driver removal... thats so awesome!!

You are making me think bad thoughts!!! :D

Edit: The stability issues I experienced were caused by sata cd-rom and problematic dfi p35 ahci controller. The cpu is running perfectly fine now!

Edit: FYI, I had to lap the cores since one was higher than the other!

That might explain why 2 cores are always cooler than the other 2... they are making better contact/closer to the IHS.
