View Full Version : My external pump/rad/res project..

Ok, so i've had the (pretty positive) feedback about my first w/c rig and i've addressed the main issues you guys pointed out.. New Laing D5 Vario pump to replace the Tt P500, new Thermochill PA120.3 rad and an EK Multioption 400 res to replace the original Tai-Chi rad and the XSPC aluminium res as shown in my previous post >> http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=164956

Again like my current system i wanna mount all these bits in some kinda external housing, so i've started with this mock-up wooden frame to give you an idea where i'm heading..

http://byfiles.storage.live.com/y1pHT9Jnrb-EWhx_Dp81pgKEghWN8O8u1NnZFXQtL2SISABJwPV2gTqn8U9NJ GqWrF4VENechlzjfo

http://byfiles.storage.live.com/y1pHT9Jnrb-EWj6lCMlwBty7s8iZhwy6SutA-MRJN2KTThWckPA0ielYhPejEGWc078deVoZb6Fz-g

Now the pump will sit at the base and the res will be half in half out somewhere around the middle of the slope! Hmmm, what i need here is a crappy drawing to show you what i mean..

http://byfiles.storage.live.com/y1pHT9Jnrb-EWhi99-iSFGRoE0hoK35kTRggntQL87KFnPPaLGXs_QEMmjv9oy87zJL2 sFzGJuBNBA

The final unit will be made from this 14x14 square steel tubing which i'll braze together (i'll fire up pics as i go)..

http://byfiles.storage.live.com/y1pHT9Jnrb-EWilH3EsiA2YKCqqHZEKPinzQnwn0qmLnqBGAYIjDJDB-V5e0lh2E1v70y2d9KQHS2c

And the whole thing will be covered in this sheet of perforated steel (if anyone says Apple G5 i'll hunt you down and...well...you get the idea ha ha)

http://byfiles.storage.live.com/y1pHT9Jnrb-EWjnEUZzab0oPIJiVSRSiyNOLJ-W0DEi5W7YKs2Wa0yOuNYySmpwBNYXAZw9Qmxmaf8

So here's the tickly bit people! I want your opinions as to where the rad should sit, either at the top facing upwards (Position 2 on the crappy drawing) or at the rear (Position 1 on the crappy drawing) facing out? I mean we all know heat rises right? So the top seems logical, but i'd kinda like the perforated sheet to curve over the top if you get my meaning and have the rad at the rear?? Over to you on that one guys & girls! ;)

looks eerily similar to newls1's waterkeg....

Just wondering, why do you want the external box? looks? keeping it all in one place? Or you just can't the stuff in your case?

Of course I have some tips:) First and foremost, YOU MUST HAVE PATIENCE!! Secondly, Take your time, no need to rush anything.

once you ve made the frame are you planning to use a metal cover?? are you gonna bolt it down or gonna fold the metal?

very promision project .. keep it coming :)

w!ldkat
11-27-2007, 07:55 AM
Yeah metal tubing frame wrapped in the perforated steel...gonna have it bend over the top with a nice smooth curve! And as newls1 said, i'll be taking my time.. I want it to look goooood! ;) Should get the frame done at the weekend so more pics to come..

Got some UV blue acrillic (AC Ryan) too and i've been toying with the idea of having that behind the mesh?! I know it'd kill the air flow, but it'd look sweet with the blue fluid...I'll probably just save it for something else..

he he thanks man, i freaked when i saw it! B&Q of all places...if you don't know them, they're like the UK's largest DIY chain.. Surprised the hell outa me! :) Roughly £15 for a 50x50cm sheet and it's maybe 2mm thick? Gonna start the frame tomorrow so there'll be new pics..

I picked up some stuff about the same size as that a long while back from Mcmaster-Carr. Welded together some part collection totes for the Swiss machines at the machine shop I worked at, it's good heavy duty stuff.

oh no!! you didnt chose silenx? or did someone force them on you? (those barstids) :(

w!ldkat
12-02-2007, 04:39 AM
Is that bad?

Origin_Unknown
12-02-2007, 04:44 AM
personally i can't stand silenx stuff, i know there is a few other members on the forum who feel the same way but i'f youve got them, use em :)

also, i like the idea of this project, i'm still um'n and r'n about watercooling (what case etc) and this is giving me something else to think about so ill be following your build :)

w!ldkat
12-02-2007, 05:44 AM
Yeah i admit i'd read a few bad things about their kit but they were there, so as you say...use em! And they seem pretty silent (one kinda buzzes ever so slightly but i can always change the fans at a later date). But i've done cutting the tubing to size and i've bent the frame ends into shape, not too bad for a first attempt!

http://txhmwa.bay.livefilestore.com/y1pKU9pZHxyDiKM39f4Hsq3pj9jOY5d6_-kduot_h0Vn1Fhp8lmn5D-r9dlyYgzmQP01A-37AagkVfsaZaCOcA2hA

Now i tried to braze the ends but it wasn't taking (kinda thought it wouldn't) so i'm taking them to my dad's workshop through the week and i'll weld that sucka good! ;) Which will help cover up any *cough* mistakes, then just grind/file off the rough edges..

Um what is wrong with the silenx, there fans seem to be very good spec even if they are abit pricey. I am thinking about picking up a few of the 19db 65CFM ones for my WC project as i want blue LED fans that will push 65CFM and arent loud. anything above 22db is considered too noisy.

look forward to see how this project pans out.

Silenx = crap ! Those db's they claim are nowhere near the reality. They're too noisy.

But i reckon i'd have to bolt my tank/cooler whatever down cos these babies blow! haha Something like 120cfm @ 45dB apparently?

http://txhmwa.bay.livefilestore.com/y1pKU9pZHxyDiKm6SkiW23zD9K9LtEu8C1ZpIe9ZolbNwemqwb DyL1HG1rvAhdrOVk_MLF5tM0aBtTQ5Q1zZTSd3w

Went to see the Chemical Brothers last weekend so i didnt get much of a chamce to get much done! However, the rad mount is now riveted into to place, which i did through the week..

Still got to drill the holes so i can actually mount the rad, but todays main goal was to get the perforated sheet bent into shape! Started by riveting the sheet to the frame and cutting the excess off. Then using nothing but good old hand power, bent it round the frame, firing rivets in as i went..

http://6ownyw.bay.livefilestore.com/y1pKU9pZHxyDiI-3ayauL5VSdC2qZScZyqjooK0jdpfFnH08T-WGHzsedmSnFqox0XG5Kcrk5V_5Vpa42wwOZwN4A

Dremel'd the sharp edges off from where i made the cuts and gently hammered the edges round the frame..

hehe thanks :)

Going to look good. Are you intending to fill the res completely? It'll suck air like that if you don't.

Yeah it'll be filled to the top, but cheers for the tip! I actually run something similar at the moment (but it has no frame/cover) which initially did exactly that (learning the hard way), but i reckon i've got all the design kinks out now (famous last words!?) but if you or anyone has any more tips, thoughts or ideas then fire them at me! Thinking of running a tube up from one of the end ports to a DD fill-port on the top, matches the style and apart from making it easier to fill, should help eliminate any trapped air?

w!ldkat
12-16-2007, 08:48 AM
W!ldKat whats the side is bottom of your wonderful handcrafted cage.

Nah that's just the way i took the pics (the res kept falling out, still designing the mounts)..the last pic is it sitting proper! :)

The res is almost level with the rad, you think that'll be ok? I'm already planning a MK2, which will be far easier to put together but i'll definitely remember your corner to corner res idea...makes perfect sense for pulling the cooler liquid...i like that! ;)

w!ldkat
12-16-2007, 09:36 AM
Hmm not a bad thought for keeping it place KC but i planned on bending two anodized aluminium straps (shape-wise they'll look like the omega symbol) that will cover the black ends of the res so it'll just be the clear perspex you'll see.. :)

Jedda
12-16-2007, 10:05 AM
A fillport sounds exactly right.
If you plan it right it could serve as the drain too.

Sabre2
12-16-2007, 01:44 PM
I liked how the exos was when I first got it, but I sent it back home early enough. If I could just find something that is much better in a similar design, I would be happy to have that sitting on top of my case instead of the bare radiator I have now.

w!ldkat
12-17-2007, 12:01 PM
I was planning to rivet the aluminium "omegas" to the mesh, but KC's idea would make it less permanent...interesting...i'll see how the straps come out...i dont wanna restrict access to the ends for the tubing! Probably gonna use one of DD's G1/4" Delrin Ls to get the 90° turn on one of the ends for the fillport! It'll be a close fit, but dammit...it's almost crazy enough to work! ;)

=WK=

w!ldkat

Well the omega shape worked better than expected..

Still gotta tidy it all up (eg. take out the temporary nut & bolt and rivet the bracket in) and dress the fittings but you can pop the res in and out!
It makes a "reassuringly secure" thunk when you pop it in too.. ;)

http://6ownyw.bay.livefilestore.com/y1pKU9pZHxyDiJcNWs_k0DThMOFdvRxzpASjEM35Vgo-rZwbUO2kj3GN0wsWamTidGR7rlMeDVltJPmGW8bwJGezA

Put some sound absorbing foam on the inside of the wood when your happy with your finished pieces. Otherwise, the wood will bounce any noise around and considering how much "grillwork" you have, your going to need to quiet it as much as possible.

Looking good so far, quit slacking off so we can see how well this works. :p:

lol, a wise man (newls1, the WaterKeg guy) once said to me "Take your time, no need to rush anything." so i'm taking my time dude sorry, but you're right about the noise! My initial thoughts were 1. Base mounted with silicon washers 2. Petra's Gel under the D5 and 3. Thermochill's gaskets on both the mounting frame and fan sides of the rad! But i'll see how that goes and take it from there.. :)

First up, sorry for being away so long (parties, subsequent hangovers and the flu!) but even while i sat in bed subjected to the horrors of daytime TV i've managed to get a few things done.. :)

Ditched the SilenX for these truly silent Nexus fans..

Apart from attaching the gel to the base, and the pump onto the gel that's pretty much it for mk1. It's currently flushing from a big tank of de-ionised water, so once my connectors arrive i'll be up and running! :)

I'll post more pics through the week but i'll try and get the temps etc up for next weekend..

I wrote it above the pic Kapt.. IN > PUMP > RES > RAD > OUT

It's only flushing so i can change it, was thinkin maybe to swap the res & pump round but i've been told the pump is plenty strong enough to work either way.. :)

You want the res feeding the pump, then rad and out to blocks and back.

It shall be done! ;) Is that so the pump isn't work as hard to pull the coolant from the blocks or am i missing some other really obvious reason? haha

have the input on top of rad an outlet bottom, if were me in>res>pump>rad>out

Cool that's how i've got the rad setup, but yeah...will swap the pump & res round!

None of the common pumps we use are of the self priming type, they are all gravity fed.

Still waiting on my connectors turning up so I was tidying up some rough edges on the cage and got a little sidetracked with my new dremel and a sheet of aluminium..

What do you think if i had this (well a smaller version) sunk into one of the wooden ends...too much?

I wan't to see the final resting location of your external cooler when you get it set up next to your system. :)

I opted for off to the right hand side on a kredenza for mine.

I will have about 3' between it and my computer. FloMaster Martain has given me his opinion that the extra length of tubing, should not offer any significant extra resistance in the loop.

I think the self sealing quick disconnects also work well with external coolers.

What are you gonna finish the perforated sheet with? Paint or just some clear laquer?

It'll sit on my window ledge to take advantage of the cool outside air! I already have a similar (but very basic) setup doing exactly that at the moment but it's very crude. And it's Koolance's quick connectors that are on it! Can't believe they discontinued the bracket though..maximum suckage! :(

My sentiments exactly, the second i get my connectors (STILL no sign but fingers crossed for tomorrow) i'll have it pumped full of coolant and taking pics for all to see! ;)

Clear laquer my good man, it would be a crime to paint it..or that's my opinion anyway!? What do you think?

newls1 might be taking some ideas off of you for his next innovation in his waterkeg!

lol, a wise man (newls1, the WaterKeg guy) once said to me "Take your time, no need to rush anything." so i'm taking my time dude sorry, but you're right about the noise! My initial thoughts were 1. Base mounted with silicon washers 2. Petra's Gel under the D5 and 3. Thermochill's gaskets on both the mounting frame and fan sides of the rad! But i'll see how that goes and take it from there.. :)

Sorry i've been away so long, there's been so many birthdays this month (including my own) that nearly every weekend for the past 3 weeks has been an overdose of drink fueled mayhem followed by the hangover from hell.. Anyway back to business, flushed the system overnight (not a leak in sight) and gave it a good 4 hour rinse out with some deionised water this morning..

http://upodsw.bay.livefilestore.com/y1pKU9pZHxyDiI0w_mbSaQClAoblFPHfT6YXRWTcVwcnymgMCO jTn1eMyAcEgtmtYXpIJGHnOWZ-UZpGGUTg98m-g

Then filled up with Feser One UV Blue and fired her up! This was also my first experience of a D5 and i have to say man does that thing shift fluid!!

Had to check that it was running when i started it up too, the pump and fans are near silent! Even ambient noise from outside (window closed) was louder! Sweet.. :D

So yay, finally got it up and running.. Gonna spend tonight wiring up some lights and stuff so expect all the proper classy & moody night shots later folks ha ha.. Also got myself a couple of temp t-junctions for in/out readings etc but i'll get them in through the week!
