Not to be overly critical, but why did you go with flash with that lens. Unless its pitch black you should be able to shoot in available light with a decently high ISO.

Not to Canon bash or anything, but from what I have read, that lense is a little soft at 1.4, but is just fine at 2.8. Apparently the sigma 30mm 1.4 does a bit better of a job wide open, but there have been alot of quality problems reported with the Canon version of it.

I suppose my point is that I would give up a little sharpness to be able to shoot available light because I am not a fan of the colors you get from direct flash. Bounce flash is dandy, but is generally a bit harder to pull off.

The 350D feels like a toy compared to most cameras.

Available light would probably have been incandescent, so maybe not worth it. I have a 40D as well and it does nicely in available, but of course I prefer the sun to be the "available" light.

Bouncing would have been possibly bad with the metal in the scene as well. But a softened bounce might have worked.
