I do it like once every decade I remember to, but people that actually do it on average do it every other week or so, but don't quote me on it

yes, defragging does help, but it's not the world's most important thing either

Bi-monthly works for me, unless I've just installed a really big program like Office 2007 or Adobe CS3.

usually when O&O reads 10-15% fragementation

diskeeper has a 'set it and forget it' mode that defrags when ever it is needed...
thats what i do.

every now and then...:hehe: i must say i dont do it often...but maybe i'll go and check it now....also, if windows says it needs doing i just do it. cant you schedule task it or something?

id say weekly or monthly if your keen.

i reckon the last time i did mine was about 3 months ago...

Just to add to this: When id software released Doom 3.. or maybe Quake 4.. one of their main people was like "make sure you defrag BEFORE AND AFTER you install this"..

..so if you have the time, that kinda sounds like it makes sense :) I usually just wanna play the new game, so I do not defrag before and only later on I defrag after

My system is set to auotdefrag when the fragmentation level gets above 2%

Look at it, like cleaning your room.

The more often you do it, the faster it goes, less stuff to get in order.

You guys are crazy.

I hit defrag in Diskeeper 2007 once every few nights. Takes a couple minutes and its done.

Wait a month or two, and you'll be waiting a long time for it to finish.

I just downloaded diskeeper 2008, and man, the trial's great! The interface is sooo much nicer than the windows utility, not to mention it does a far faster/better job

I never defrag my disk, I believe it has a very little effect on performance considering the todays fast 7200RPM disks. I makes more sense do defrag a 4200RPM or 5400RPM when using a ntfs filesytems in my opinion, Linux filesystems such as ext3 or xfs do not require defragging.

I can pretty well vouch for it having almost no effect. I defrag my disks maybe once a year if even that and I have never noticed a performance gain after the defrag. I also download and delete large amounts of video files from the disks so it's not like they just sit there not being used.

Depends on what your doing. If your constantly compiling, editing, programming, installing etc. then I imagine quite a bit. For my needs I do it once a month.

There's an other option, instead of defrag it, you could just frag it, and buy a new.

This is only for the ones with anger problems though.

every time on boot before Windwos, so at least once a day

It only takes less than 20 seconds from regular use and maybe 2-5 minutes if games were installed/uninstalled

O&O FTW

i defrag prolly every 3 weeks or so, depends. I dont set a schedule or anything. 2%fragmentation is fine, when its like 15% is when ya need too

and ys linux owns because no need to worry about fragmented files, performance does seem to degrade over time if your just running everyting on / with /home parts. better to run a /boot/tmp/usr/var/swap to reduce performance hit

11-07-2007, 09:40 PM
I used to do it perhaps once every 1-2 months but now I haven't done it for a year+. lol Maybe it's time, maybe not, seems to run fairly good anyways and loading times ain't bothering me. Since once it caused one of my HDDs to get a few corrupted sectors when comp froze I haven't defragged so often.

Would probably take quite a few hours for me to defrag everything now, wonder if 6 - 8hrs would even be enough. :D

I haven't run a defrag or scheduled one, for quite a while now. But my defragmenter is automatic, so it runs in the background (barely any resource usage though) and defrags quietly during idle, if fragmentation has increased. My drives see low or no fragmentation most of the time. I like it better than the old manual/scheduled way because the PC runs it's own maintenance, saving me the trouble. :D

Ever since my PC almost screeched to halt due to various drive issues including very high levels of fragmentation and no free space, its prevention is better than cure approach for me. I am right checking out a commercial trialware and planning to set it if its working without any issues.

once in a year .. if the computer specs is high, more than 1gb ram etc .. why bother .. its not noticable unless benchmark

defrag only for servers .. where data fragmentation is humonguous

Just for the hell of it after I made this post I made a note of it to defrag my main drive when I got home and once again I noticed no performance gain. I didn't run any benching programs but just loading video files and games I didn't see any noticeable change in load times. Also it has probably been about a year since the last time I ran a defrag.
