"Works Perfect, But SLOW"

Pros: Small, Cheap NAS Solution. Works Great if you have a good base in computers. Will Work with Vista, Will Work Solid only if firmware updates are done. Will Host and work as a Movie Server.

Cons: Transfer Time Makes This Unit Almost Useless. Even on a Giga-Network. The unit is easily one tenth as fast as a USB External drive transfer to... I have two 250 GB drives. It has taken 16 Hours to add 450Gb of Data. Transfer from is much better however... Still worse than a USB Drive.

Buy This Unit, It works very well, you must must update the firmware! Warning! If you plan to use it as a file server, it will be totally outclassed by any cheap USB drive that can be shared on a network. Very very slow file transfers, unbearable actually. It would be faster to read from a Floppy Drive. Once the files are on the drive, they are easily streamed to any media player with only a very minimal seek delay. The unit will serve it's role for me so overall I am pleased. If you want a file server, buy a bare bone computer with RAID on the Mobo and build a file server, it will be a bit more expensive, but it will be 1000 times faster. The ability for the owner to add drives on the fly is great. The interface program is easy to install in Vista or XP. The fact that you can use your old IDE drives is great too. When the unit has worked for constant duty for over one hour, it does get warm, but the drives are still within a normal range. When not being used, the drive is cold as ice. Hope this helps.

Yeah that seems to be the main problem with consumer NAS enclosures (slow transfer rates)... I think i might as well get a cheap $50 one if i would get one.

LOL Nas= SLOW!

I don't think this is always true.
Cheap Nas = Slow but this is not true for the high end NAS systems with fiber connections that some companies are using.

I have had one for over a year, its great for backups of my photo graphs and music collection. I did have 2*320GB hds in but they are almost full, so will upgrade to 2*750GB units soon, thats 1.5TBs! Then I use Nero Backup evey few months to back the backups up!

Slow but sure once you do the firmware update.

I did have an issue with overheating and the drives stopped working! But I had a HD cooling fan set up break when the power connector broke. So now it sits on top of the SC 101 with 2 fans blowing down onto the heatsink, power comping from an old 1/10 transformer switch found in the back of a cupboard. It keeps the unit cool even when my wife is downloading 100hrs with of Hero's, Lost and other such junk onto it.

I will post a picture! Might be a market for such a unit once it was made to fit snug onto the heat sink and power comming from a connector to the SC 101 power unit!

I would recomend NOT getting one now that 1TB HDD are only $150.

Get a single SATA HDD and put it into a USB Box.

USB Performance is slow, but this is slower. You can "Share" the USB drive and it becomes basically a NAS as long as the computer is on.

Here is how I keep my 101 cool in the summer when the AC is not on in the house.

You can see the old HD cooler and the very good use of velcro cable tidies to keep the fans from falling off.

It does a very good job of keeping the unit nice a cold.

The new model has a built in fan, which netgear said "wasn't that the old model had an over heating problem.....but". I will be abusing my position in school and using the Craft & Design room to build a better holder for the fans. I will make a lid out of plastic sheet and just hotwire the edges to form the sides, they will then sit in the groves of the heat sink. Then drill the holes for the fans and screws. Hey I might get one of the students to do it for me!

The two little fans keep it at a perfect temperature, no more over heating problems now.

Anybody any reviews of the SC 101T the new model?
